  • Il like the way he said: it's a simple blues!!! ha ha ha with a few chords.....

  • Very intelligent on guitar

  • i really enjoy how he closed his eyes at the end;dd

  • Umm what?!

  • she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes...

  • he looses me but i love it, its great hearing some one who knows what hes up to and enjoys it

  • He's in Back in the barnyard!!!!

    Nice lesson Though.....

  • this may be the best use of the internet i have ever run across.!!....A master teacher and player....two things which dont necessarily go together,,,

  • Great video, i wish it was easier to see the fretboard though.

  • whats the song at 5:28?

  • @Cl0udyDayz It's blue moon

  • That is a real lesson thank you for posting !!!!

  • this lesson is worth it's weight in gold.So many great sub chords and turnarounds! You can fly down and see him for 2 hundred an hour. For my money he's the best out there.

  • This man is like a walking library ! Both theoretically as well as musically...

    great stuff.

  • Wow - how great isYoutube! A masterclass from a guitarist I have admired for many, many years. What a shame I am not a master - 95% of it completely over my head.

  • Simple blues in C. LOL! I don't think so!

  • @superatomicmeltdown You have to consider the concentration that goes into speaking while playing .The tension that arises when striving to keep it together may seem as if there might be a tinge of attitude .That is why there arent many take the chalenge :)

  • @superatomicmeltdown dont talk out your ass, numbnuts.. Coryell is a superb musician.. why do you say he is pompous?? could it be he is TOO clever for you..

  • I could just watch this guy playing forever...beautiful

  • i think this is a very helpful lesson he makes things more simple than a lot of other teachers that have taught me and i mean come on how cool is it that you can just go online and get a guitar lesson from larry coryell

  • Same thing in sports. Great players are usually not great managers or coaches.

  • this is hot

  • when he plays it in the beginning , it swings so hard, just him no drums or bass, idk if u guys feel that 2 and 4, but this guy is great.

  • @DjZormMusic what idk means

  • @orlyorlywtf idk means "i dont know"

  • This kind of chord substitution works great unless you have another guitar player or pianist in the band. If you haven't worked out every turn around with them beforehand, it can often descend into a horrible mess. My advice in those situations is to stay away from the low notes especially with tritone substitution.

  • @sixstring58 i agree, when in a big band setting, especially if you;re playing freddie green style, its better to use higher register chords with more relation to the chart,. but when theres less instruments , i think its cool to kind of free up on the comping. and btw, besides duets, when is there more than one guitar in a band =P?

  • @DjZormMusic As a kid, I read a Wes interview where he mentioned respecting Green's chord work most of all. Being impressed by Wes's chords, I figured this meant Green's chords were even more difficult, mysterious, & complex. Surprise! It turned out his chords were often 2 or 3 notes, often built in 5ths & 6ths instead of 3rds & 4ths. Playing only what needed to be played, leaving the rest of the voicing to other instruments: A better lesson than I expected.

  • @lazur1 yea because in a big band when you have a bass player and pianist , u dont wanna clash.

  • coooll...thanks Larry

  • vanilla major chord lol

  • The use of "passing chords' is largely a question of personal taste-and those choices form the distinctive sound of the musician-you have a wide palette of choice that make musical sense

  • I have found over the years that great players are not necessarily great teachers! But if you are patient you can learn lots from these very fine musicians

  • larry coryell and john mclauphlin are number one and number one best guitarists that ever lived. larry smoked mcglauphlin on the Spaces album songs wrong is right, and spaces infinite, the best jazz solos ever period done in the universe

  • he's so hard to follow .. .

  • thank you. The passing chords really helped me.

  • musictranscription - Post us some of your blues please, id be interested to hear you .

    dj

  • I can get the notes just by ear

  • you're awesome

  • Ditto that Gminor7. been trying to find someone to teach me thsi stuff for 35 years. Can do most everything else but jazz has always eluded me. You the man Larry. thanks!!!

  • UTUBE at its best!! Man This Cat Is A MASTER!!

  • he does look quite like a cat

  • Yea, your right. Not just a metaphorical cat but a real cat. Is it the hair...or the eyes, or both? I don't know.

  • this guy is great! Thanks for the post. I have watched a few videos now, and I must say he is quite a unique person, but if you get past that which I have read quite a few cannot, he is actually a brilliant teacher and phenomenal musician.

Wish I had half his knowledge and talent.

  • This is amazing that you can go on Youtube and get free guitar lesson from Larry Coryell!!

  • I agree with the other comments that Larry, not only one of the truly great players, is a phenomenal teacher. I did not go to music school but in 30 years of trying to learn to play jazz I found the most helpful materials to be his videos and the two from Emily Remler. Larry has the old Hot Licks video called "Advanced Jazz Guitar", and this one from Stefan Grossman's Workshop, called Jazz Guitar of Larry Coryell, or something like that. I have 100s of vids/books but none better than Larry's.

  • the 'Blue Moon thing, yessss....

  • lol "simpel blues"... wtf was that??

  • lol!!!

  • As far as Jazz goes, the blues is simple. You actually have to be a little educated in it to appreciate it.

  • haha it's a "simple" 'jazz' blues. which is not so simple for the uninitiated. basically it starts from a regular 12 bar blues and starts adding chord substitutions to make the harmony more complex.

  • i like coryell, like his playing, he s a master...

videos like these are reference videos, you return to them from time to time, dense knowledge..

As far as "hate comments" are concerned , we all should be happy for the internet thing, look at the benefits..don't just bitch around, post a video response...show us your case, ace.

  • well, this is it :) thanks

  • uhhhh.......... yeah man totally

  • I like how explains where he's going on the board, lots of teachers who can play can't explain what they do this well. He's not just a phenomenon player, great teacher too!

  • I saw him perform the entire Firebird Suite (by Strravinsky) live - in Sydney, back in '83.(or 84).

I mean ...who could do close to that, playing-wise???

  • Nothing to add to sidhrtha - except AMEN BROTHER!

I heard Larry at the Ash Grove in Hollywood around 1969. He blew my mind. Truly a charter member of the Pantheon of Guitar Gods.

A great teacher as well. Thank you, Larry.

    Live forever.

  • the most innovative, soulful, intellectual, technical, natural, shit, the best fucking guitar player ever. check out his solo on the original spaces recording, song spaces, he smokes mcglaughlin. have seen him many times over the last 30 years, still in awe!

  • @sidhrtha i wouldnt say he smokes mclaughlin. hteyre both great. its stupid to say things like that imho

  • What is this from? I want the whole thing.

  • you can find the info in the video description along with a link to purchase the dvds.

  • This Man is the Obi Wan Kenobi of Guitar!!!!

  • Saw him at Music-Go-Round in Phoenix 8 years ago at a Cort seminar. This lesson is magnificent! Thank you Larry!!

  • Jazz is a little bit of both science and art. You think these guys just pick up a guitar and "figure it out" in a few years? Unless you're a prodigy, that approach won't get you too far.

  • I am actually a firm believer of the fact that turning ANYTHING into a science is the only way to truly excel in it. Yes, jazz is an art, but turning it into a science allows you to make the best possible art. otherwise you're just poking around lost.

  • Great job as usual Larry. This is great, wish I had this when I was kid. You can learn alot from any of his DVD's.

    Bravo!

  • i have a lot of respect for Larry hes a happening dude,i also am fond of billy pezzack in the uk

  • hes my uncle!

  • Oh man I need to get this video for my son!

  • awe-some

  • This was great, thank you for the lesson!

  • This is so cool!!!! Thanks for sharing! Love it!!

  • You got that right. I've met him a few times. He's terrific.

  • Nice. Dig Larry own it.

  • So much in these few minutes - ideas for years of practice :)

  • Thanks for the great lesson
