The Clash, Depeche Mode, New Order, even Queen to certain extent, were either mediocre at best, or underground In the U.K. until they made an impact in the States.

It goes the other way too. Oasis flopped in the U.S. and America is the only country in the world where Cliff Richard can walk down the street!!!!

I recall hearing Richard Butler saying in an interview that this song was simply about being naked (hence Pretty In Pink - skin color). I took the meaning of "real surprise" as being that she is someone who cheats on her boyfriends.
