When the harmonica kicked in something happened to me... a shiver flew all around me and I nearly cried. How does Bruce achieve that??? I've heard this song a thousand times but this version is a killer!
@ak23261 that's so true. My dad spent 3 tours in Nam. I didn't know him before he went because I was born in 73. But I know it really messed him up. He had a lot of problems dealing with life. He would have flashbacks, a drinking problem and had trouble holding a job down. Then worst of all he died of cancer in 96, cancer that was from Agent Orange. RIP Tom Rafter I miss you.
@tearaft Thanks for your dad's service,I went in right after-1975-81-those guys trained me-they didn't want us to get fu*ked up like they did-we still got sent to some central/south American shitholes, and round one of Afghanistan though.
@tearaft Thanks for your dad's service,I went in right after-1975-81-those guys trained me-they didn't want us to get fu*ked up like they did-we still got sent to some central/south American shitholes, and round one of Afghanistan though.
I think I'm ok,only on wife # 3 all my kids are adults now ,and I managed to keep them in clothes and food, plus a roof over their heads.
"On the Born in the U.S.A. Tour, it was often preceded by a long, intense story from Springsteen about his battles with his father growing up, that would sometimes conclude positively and sometimes not" do any recordings of the story with a negative conclusion exist?
This is simply incredible. Epic stuff. Everytime the harmonica kicks in after that final sentence, you've got to have goosebumps. If not then you should really see a doctor.
So sorry about all those boys who were drafted and died in Vietnam,or were left shattered mentally or physically. We didn't have that in Canada. (EIther did wealthy or well-connected Americans - just the regular folks went over)
possibly my favorite versions of any song ever made, one of my most listened to on itunes. i love it because its not about anti-war, hatred between a son and a father, or anything bad. its just about being thankful for what you have and not taking anything for granted, and that is one of the most important things in life i think.
I lost my father to that war, and some good friends later. This intro brought me back to those days, and I think of all the great musicians like Springsteen's that we lost War kills
Thanks for posting. Could anybody help me to find the full text of the intro? Although I can understand most of it, as a non native English speaker I miss some words, probably because of Bruce's accent :-) However, the Born in the Usa (song) story tells us that also Americans sometimes may not fully understand what Bruce says ;-)
played this exact version of this song at my dad's funeral we always listened to it together. I think he liked the story how it pertained to a father and son. It is definitely a good memory for me
This song is truly incredible I remember my dad playing this when we were driving on long journeys together just me and my dad in the car and this song and now when I'm driving my dad on a long journey I put this in the CD player and we might of been arguing the whole way and this song comes on and there is silence that harmonica just tears through what ever we are saying and we just listen and listen and listen.
This reaches right into the bottom of my soul and rocks my world upside down. I wouldn't want it any other way. I know I'm listening to a rock genius.
Me and my whole family loved Bruce & The E Street band - I grew up listening to him, especially this live album and listening to it always makes me vividly remember my childhood in a way nothing ever quite reaches. Love Bru, always and forever :D
Who is the knob who is not emotionally not moved by this story, i have tears in my eyes every time and i have had this L.p yes vinyl,, for over 20 yrs and i am still moved by it today..
I'm from the Netherlands and I was unfortunately born way after this concert but the speech makes this fantastic song so so special. It doesn't matter if you live in the USA or not, or if you're 60 of 16, I think this music would move everyone's heart. It doesn't matter that I didn't experience the US in the sixties/seventees. Bruce can make you feel how it was. And reading all those stories about the message Bruce is giving makes me shiver. And then the music starts. It's perfect.
I remember in the winter of 86 arriving in Germany to my new Army unit. My first night I sat around drinking beer with my new buddies, and heard this for the first time. Never forgot it...have not heard it in 24 years. Wow...
...he called me back to sit down with him...and the first thing he always asked me:WHAT DID I THINK I WAS DOING WITH MY SELF?........and the worst part about it is was i could never explain it to him.......
@skinroller "Those who are the worst treated by democracy are the first to stand up and give their lives to defend it" Michael Moore, in Farenhiet 9/11. this is what politicians do. the send young people like us off, and never send their own children or go themselves. welcome to the modern government
@butlerlacrosse22 that's true, and I respect them for it. they are brave and daring, and are heroes. but you can't expect a conscript to want to fight. we're not all soldiers, and we all should have a choice.
The drummer he is referinf to was named Bart Haynes. He was the drummer in Bruce's first band the Castiles. He was a year older than Bruce and enlisted in the Marines. He was killed in action in 1968.
this is so moving. my eyes are the complete opposite form dry. I have friends stationed in Kuwait. I hope he remains out of harm. I have plans for the military later....
First off, this story is amazing - so universal and understated. His father's reaction to him failing his physical is shattering; then you hear that harmonica swoop in and it dissolves any attempted you had at not crying.

Sensational..........After a hard days work on Tuesday I had a text from a good Friend who is a big Bruce fan, like myself , he told me to listen to this, I came home had a shower ,opened a cold beer and fell asleep listening to this story and quite remarkable song, Thank you Bruce you really are a Unbelieveable Artist.
I love Bruce's songs v much, this one always pulls at me in such a way it's hard to describe though. Halfway between joy at his ultimate realisation of his father's love and sorrow at the story of the song (which was based on the real-life relationship of one of his childhood friend's). W/e, this is one of the best songs and in particular; versions, of a song, ever sung.
My mom, who passed away in 1988, loved this specific version of The River. She loved Bruce and how he could tell a story. She'd listen to her Bruce tapes while undergoing chemo for her brain cancer. In January of this year, my car was totalled and this particular disc from that set was part of the loss. It's so good to hear this tune again, in memory of Mom, on her 74th birthday (8/18/35).
@tduffy2 such a great way to honour the memory of your mom! May God keep her next to him! Greetings. And just like your mom and you, I also consider bruce a great story-teller!
hadn't listened to this version for years...since when I moved out of my parents house...tears used to come to my eyes all the times back then...and they still do...best intro ever.
Not a Springsteen fan totally but the first time I heard this I was blown away. The background music still gives me goosebumps and the tears are never far away.
