  • The best live version of any song. Ever.

  • Man, now this is how you express creative sadness. Love ya Bruce, hope to see you soon.

  • "i said they didn't take me ... an he said that's good"

  • When he says his friend didn't even know where Vietnam was I nearly cried-- that's so sad, so innocent

  • When the harmonica kicked in something happened to me... a shiver flew all around me and I nearly cried. How does Bruce achieve that??? I've heard this song a thousand times but this version is a killer!

  • @Plaid94 this album is already on spotify, but vinyl is the best.

  • Yeah I got this box! It belong to my dad, but I listen almost every day to this song on lp. Men this is great!

  • Our boss from New Jersey, and we love him! Bruuuce

  • where can i downoad this version of the song?

  • The boxset 1975-1985 is one of the most perfect live albums in the history of rock in spite of the different recording sources.

  • this is my favorite version of this song

  • My 1st night in Germany in the Cav listened to this with my friends...1986, and still clear as a bell

  • That damn harmonica. Makes me cry like a baby everytime.

  • The first time I heard this I cried like a baby...and I was 19

  • i get the chills everytime ...... bigtime

  • The greatest storyteller ever. I think God thought hard about the end of the 20th century and decided we needed another prophet.

  • De longe a melhor versão do meu album favorito... a introdução à musica em si, leva-nos ao extase...

  • Mom's 76th birthday is tomorrow, August 18th, and she still loved this tune, and it still reminds me of her. Search my comments.... Love you mom.

  • me and my dad are the same way .... im 16 , id doo the same thing .... but with a cell phone haha

  • Oh my god, thank you so much for uploading!

  • One of the best monlogs and songs EVER!!!!!!

  • @ak23261 that's so true. My dad spent 3 tours in Nam. I didn't know him before he went because I was born in 73. But I know it really messed him up. He had a lot of problems dealing with life. He would have flashbacks, a drinking problem and had trouble holding a job down. Then worst of all he died of cancer in 96, cancer that was from Agent Orange. RIP Tom Rafter I miss you.

  • @tearaft Thanks for your dad's service,I went in right after-1975-81-those guys trained me-they didn't want us to get fu*ked up like they did-we still got sent to some central/south American shitholes, and round one of Afghanistan though.

  • @tearaft Thanks for your dad's service,I went in right after-1975-81-those guys trained me-they didn't want us to get fu*ked up like they did-we still got sent to some central/south American shitholes, and round one of Afghanistan though.

I think I'm ok,only on wife # 3 all my kids are adults now ,and I managed to keep them in clothes and food, plus a roof over their heads.

  • my father cries when he hears this song this story+song! amazing!

  • reminds me of ?

  • The only dislike is YouTube capping this at 10 minutes (fascists), but other than that, simply incredible.

  • "On the Born in the U.S.A. Tour, it was often preceded by a long, intense story from Springsteen about his battles with his father growing up, that would sometimes conclude positively and sometimes not" do any recordings of the story with a negative conclusion exist?

  • whoever the one person that disliked this is, FUCK YOU

  • @ 4:49 "woo-hoo, failure!!!"

  • Alot of guys went, and alot of guys didn't come back. And the lot that came back, weren't the same anymore. How true is that...

  • This is simply incredible. Epic stuff. Everytime the harmonica kicks in after that final sentence, you've got to have goosebumps. If not then you should really see a doctor.

  • Bruce would so kick Chuck Norris´s ass!!

  • BRUCE! I was there, nice tune. Suck my mighty dick, punk.

  • @Smackdaddy9 what's your point?

  • Whole new level of goosebumps

  • The one person who disliked this.. Probably never had a father, never grew up... Never knew the "struggle" Thank the Lord for Springsteen.

  • So sorry about all those boys who were drafted and died in Vietnam,or were left shattered mentally or physically. We didn't have that in Canada. (EIther did wealthy or well-connected Americans - just the regular folks went over)

  • unfucking believable..

  • possibly my favorite versions of any song ever made, one of my most listened to on itunes. i love it because its not about anti-war, hatred between a son and a father, or anything bad. its just about being thankful for what you have and not taking anything for granted, and that is one of the most important things in life i think.

  • Always 1 ass-clown...

This reaches the epitome of the rare human ability to capture our true essence and communicate it through music and song...

And if thats too deep for you... IT BLOODY RAWKS!!!

  • @sikoserb aah the guy just missed the like button because of the tears in his eyes :)

  • "And the worst part about it was I could never explain it to him"

Everything about this song cut right through me.

I honestly believe that Bruce Springsteen was put on this earth to make music and the world is a better place with him in it.

  • does anyone know where I can get this version of the song?

  • @plaid94 Live 75-85. I love that cd.

  • I lost my father to that war, and some good friends later. This intro brought me back to those days, and I think of all the great musicians like Springsteen's that we lost War kills

  • Thanks for posting. Could anybody help me to find the full text of the intro? Although I can understand most of it, as a non native English speaker I miss some words, probably because of Bruce's accent :-) However, the Born in the Usa (song) story tells us that also Americans sometimes may not fully understand what Bruce says ;-)

  • 5:10 - 5:20 had me in tears <3

  • played this exact version of this song at my dad's funeral we always listened to it together. I think he liked the story how it pertained to a father and son. It is definitely a good memory for me

  • This song is truly incredible I remember my dad playing this when we were driving on long journeys together just me and my dad in the car and this song and now when I'm driving my dad on a long journey I put this in the CD player and we might of been arguing the whole way and this song comes on and there is silence that harmonica just tears through what ever we are saying and we just listen and listen and listen.

  • I used to listen to this song before I slept.I had it,and still have it,in my mp3,so I just put my headphones on and close my eyes :)

  • the best......boss forever

  • @TDUFFY2: thanks brother . . .

  • This reaches right into the bottom of my soul and rocks my world upside down. I wouldn't want it any other way. I know I'm listening to a rock genius.

  • Don't hate the one guy who accidently pushed the don't like button!

  • @1990cv accidentally ofcourse... Excuse me I'm dutch

  • Lo tienen que escuchar...! Activamente. Les gustará! Saludos. Continuo pensando lo mismo! Felices fiestas!!!

  • Lo tienen que escuchar...! Activamente. Les gustará! Saludos.

  • every song in the world want to be this one!!!!!

  • Two words: that's good... mean everything to any son whoever hoped his father would tell him he loved him...

  • worst bit about this, is that it cuts off early!

  • Bruce Springsteen makes life worth living even when nothing else does.

  • Me and my whole family loved Bruce & The E Street band - I grew up listening to him, especially this live album and listening to it always makes me vividly remember my childhood in a way nothing ever quite reaches. Love Bru, always and forever :D

  • mooier kan het niet

  • Who is the knob who is not emotionally not moved by this story, i have tears in my eyes every time and i have had this L.p yes vinyl,, for over 20 yrs and i am still moved by it today..

  • Tears stream slowly...every damn time. Moving music the way it should be.

  • Another reason not to drive a motorbike..... ;)

  • Another reason to grow long hair...

  • I'm from the Netherlands and I was unfortunately born way after this concert but the speech makes this fantastic song so so special. It doesn't matter if you live in the USA or not, or if you're 60 of 16, I think this music would move everyone's heart. It doesn't matter that I didn't experience the US in the sixties/seventees. Bruce can make you feel how it was. And reading all those stories about the message Bruce is giving makes me shiver. And then the music starts. It's perfect.

  • I remember in the winter of 86 arriving in Germany to my new Army unit. My first night I sat around drinking beer with my new buddies, and heard this for the first time. Never forgot it...have not heard it in 24 years. Wow...

  • hope it does something for you Anne :)

  • MY FAVORITE VERSION

  • ‎...he called me back to sit down with him...and the first thing he always asked me:WHAT DID I THINK I WAS DOING WITH MY SELF?........and the worst part about it is was i could never explain it to him.......

  • Mahoujirou y Run Run, les amo

  • ¡¡q chingonería de rollo!!

  • Makes me flood with tears, every time I hear it.

  • @mrrobbienh i can only agree - me too my friend who passed away earlier this year used to love this song....

  • One of the best songs ever! :D great great intro.

I got the lyrics from the intro, i made um myself!

  • Amazing!

But it's a shame that America is still sending young men and women to kill and die in foreign countries.

  • @skinroller "Those who are the worst treated by democracy are the first to stand up and give their lives to defend it" Michael Moore, in Farenhiet 9/11. this is what politicians do. the send young people like us off, and never send their own children or go themselves. welcome to the modern government

  • @17Hongo ppl like us volunteer .....they want to

  • @butlerlacrosse22 that's true, and I respect them for it. they are brave and daring, and are heroes. but you can't expect a conscript to want to fight. we're not all soldiers, and we all should have a choice.

  • unbearably awesome, shattering.

  • what chord or key is he playing at the very start ????

  • @Joshwhitt96: A add9 but he plays it with a capo on the second fret.

  • The drummer he is referinf to was named Bart Haynes. He was the drummer in Bruce's first band the Castiles. He was a year older than Bruce and enlisted in the Marines. He was killed in action in 1968.

  • @BobReidy

    how tragic

  • Oh yeah.

  • this is so moving. my eyes are the complete opposite form dry. I have friends stationed in Kuwait. I hope he remains out of harm. I have plans for the military later....

im going to add this to my ipod now

  • Best. Song. EVAR!!

  • First off, this story is amazing - so universal and understated. His father's reaction to him failing his physical is shattering; then you hear that harmonica swoop in and it dissolves any attempted you had at not crying.

Parents: just when you think you knvw them that's when they go out of their way to show you how much they care for you.

  • I saw him over the summer and he played the river and told this exact story. It will always be one of my favorite memories. It tells a sad story but its inlightening. I might not get it now but i will when im older. the meaning of this song might take a lil while to settle in im only 14 so I have a lot of time to think about it.

  • Thanks for the upload! Is there any video of this concert?

  • @pat6850 not as far as I know... :-(

  • @pat6850 my thoughts was the same wen found this!! if anyone can find ANY footage of this gig(or series of) then get it posted will ya!!! bruce at his most personally best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @pat6850 Yeh accually I just found it, search for Springsteen - the river live beautiful speech :)

  • this tell's a lifetime in a few minutes, a copy of my childhood.........

  • Dang. This is depressing.

    in a good way though.

  • i love this song. so much. oh man. beautiful

  • best song ever

  • Profound. My eyes are more than a bit damp.

  • "And I said, 'they didn't take me'. And he said, 'That's good,'". Win.

  • Thank you to all the American Soldiers who are doing what they do to help us to what we do. It's a sad comment really. Because few really know how important your roll is. I do. I admire you. Really I send prayers to surround you with safety.

    God Bless you all,

    Deb

    PhilandDeb818

  • This is so good! I have heard this on 1975-1985 a million times, and it is still great!

  • Very touching story..thanks for sharing, Bruce. He is STILL such a legend.

  • This version always makes my shed tears...But I keep listening to it...because it is that good

  • Sensational..........After a hard days work on Tuesday I had a text from a good Friend who is a big Bruce fan, like myself , he told me to listen to this, I came home had a shower ,opened a cold beer and fell asleep listening to this story and quite remarkable song, Thank you Bruce you really are a Unbelieveable Artist.

  • incredible

  • the intro to this ..gets me everytime..the words just melt my heart..

  • Brings back memories!

    The intro...great!

  • I love Bruce's songs v much, this one always pulls at me in such a way it's hard to describe though. Halfway between joy at his ultimate realisation of his father's love and sorrow at the story of the song (which was based on the real-life relationship of one of his childhood friend's). W/e, this is one of the best songs and in particular; versions, of a song, ever sung.

  • Actualy the song is about his sister and her husband.

  • My mom, who passed away in 1988, loved this specific version of The River. She loved Bruce and how he could tell a story. She'd listen to her Bruce tapes while undergoing chemo for her brain cancer. In January of this year, my car was totalled and this particular disc from that set was part of the loss. It's so good to hear this tune again, in memory of Mom, on her 74th birthday (8/18/35).

  • Thanks for sharing a lovely story man, god bless

  • @tduffy2 BRAVO !

  • @tduffy2 such a great way to honour the memory of your mom! May God keep her next to him! Greetings. And just like your mom and you, I also consider bruce a great story-teller!

  • Best intro ever.
