i have been looking for the movie that played on PBS a few years back about Asbury Park. i think it was made by the Asbury Park Garden club. does any know how to get a copy of this movie???
Really brings me back! I was brought up in Wanamassa but left in 1965 for Miami (I was 10, it wasn't up to me!). I didn't return for another 40 years. We hit the boardwalk on a hot July afternoon in 2005...there wasn't a soul on the boardwalk or beach...how depressing! I, too, have home movies that my father shot in the early 60's that prove what a vibrant place Asbury was! Thanks for posting this video!
Wow. I was 9 y.o. living in Wanamassa on Deal Lake at the time. Made my public profession of faith in Jesus Christ that June at First Methodist Church in Asbury Park. Fond memories of fireworks, concerts, salt-water taffy, the rides, and the beach. Thanks for posting.
I was 6 1/2 years old when you filmed this and my dad was in Nam. I have vivid memories of going with grandmother and mom to this now gone place. Thanks for giving us a blast to a sweet past.
I remember being 15 years old and my Father read in the newspaper about a club called the Hullaballoo was opening up on Kingsley St. Sonny and the Starfires was the weekly group. That's where I met my first and last love William B. Burrus also known as Shabazz. He was black and I white. Back in 1966 there was segregation and racism right in Asbury Park.Mixed couples were a no no but we didn't care. Thanks for the precious memories. I love you ASBURY PARK,N.J. Kathleen Serra Perry
I remember riding on the bumper cars for free with my three girlfriends. Seymour who operated the bumper cars during the week at the Palace , he would put us girls on and then the guys would pay to ride when it was slow during the morning hours. lol!
The sights, the smells, come back to me. I was 8 yrs old living next door in Ocean Grove when this was made. I would walk to the Palace, up to the Metropolitan Pool shown here. The small pool had a high dive where I got my first B's to jump off..
i'm from red bank new jersey & some of my best memories are going to the palace with my buddies & hanging out at the boardwalk and tilley starring at us at night with his magnificent grin!!! they have to bring it all back man!!!!!!!
Everyone seems to have good memories of Asbury Park back then. I only went there a few times but remember the smell of hot dogs cooking and "surf music" playing. Afterall, it was the 60s.
This is a wild, haunting look back for me - my dad and grandparents and THEIR forebearers all lived in Asbury Park (at least as far back as the 1870's). I grew up in nearby West Long Branch and recognize EVERYTHING in this film... that little train that ran along the boards... the
giant pool was a salt water pool fed by pumps from the Atlantic. I was 13 the year this film was made - spent all kinds of time in AP.
Thanks for bringing back a time and place where there was magic in the night!
Born and raised in New Jersey (Asbury Park) I was only a kid during this video but I'm still proud of home. I hope to see the boardwalk and other areas there improve as time goes on. I want to see the boardwalk full again as it once was. Love ya ASBURY PARK!!!
Kerry-Have you seen Asbury Park recently. They are trying to clean up the area. There are some beautiful homes but it is not like it was 40 yrs ago.
This is just another great video. What is really cool is that you have captured America over the last five decades. I always look forward to anything new that you post.
I was 3 years old and don't remember much of Asbury Park and moved far away at age 7. We always went to Bradley Beach and Avon, so I don't know much about Asbury Park. But I know all about those jetties. I enjoy this video. The piano sounds like George Winston. I am almost sure it is George.
Wow--back when Asbury Park was still really nice-the boardwalk-beach-amusment park-remember the Merry-go-round ? I do. too bad it's still not their.I was in 7th grade back then in Bradley Beach. Thanks.
You know, I may have bumped into you back then. Of course, I am about 9 years younger than you but we always were at the shore in Avon and Bradley Beach.
Wonderful vid Kerry, thanks for sharing an interesting time in American history. I particularly liked the night scene, it reminded me of the nightclub scene in "The Graduate". The views in the film are what Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin would have known and saw.

That was fun. Thanks. I would have been visiting Wildwood, NJ, at about that time.
Was that a young Bruce I saw hanging out near the arcade?
Nice music, btw.

I spent my childhood looking forward to trips to the boardwalk in the 60's. It was a perfect way to spend time at the beach with the family.
Unfortunatly, the riots in the 70's killed Asbury Park reducing it to a boardwalk with no attractions, a batherless beach, a city with no stores.
Over the last few years, There has been sizable investment in building condo's & fixing up the older Victorian homes in town.
But the boardwalk remains devoid of any amusements, rides or stands.
The beach, empty.
