Cutting the military would take a bigger chunk out of the debt than social spending cuts would. We have bases in most of the countries in the world. Is that really neccessary?

Social Security and Medicare are unsustainable pyramid schemes that are entirely unconstitutional and immoral in that they siphon money out of the paychecks of young workers to pay for older retirees.
I fully believe that older folks should get their SS and Medicare as promised, but younger workers (including myself) should not, and SS/Medicare taxes should gradually be reduced to zero.

The US defense budget is larger than every other country's budget in the world combined. If you're serious about fiscal responsibility, you are going to have to support cutting the number one US government expenditure, along with raising some taxes.

I used to think a revolution would not happen for at least another century, but with talk like this I'm not so sure anymore. I'm not American, but even up here in Canada there is talk of "reforming" health care, which is less-than-subtle language for cutting health care. What pisses me off is that there's little or no resistance from the opposition parties (Liberals, NDP) - oddly the Bloc Quebecois has been the most vocal opposition party.
People should not just sit back and accept this crap.

Social Security and Medicare are unsustainable pyramid schemes that are entirely unconstitutional and immoral in that they siphon money out of the paychecks of young workers to pay for older retirees.
I fully believe that older folks should get their SS and Medicare as promised, but younger workers (including myself) should not, and SS/Medicare taxes should gradually be reduced to zero.
It's time to abandon economic ideas of the 1930s. They are not sustainable.

The comming liability was predicted 30+ years ago and S.S contributions were raised to a surplus level. Since then S.S has been collected far in excess of what has been paid out. There should be 4+ Trillion $ in it now to start paying for the baby boomer retirement but it has all been spent.

The US defense budget is larger than every other country's budget in the world combined. If you're serious about fiscal responsibility, you are going to have to support cutting the number one US government expenditure, along with raising some taxes.
Everything you listed is small time compared to the DOD. Also, shifting the tax burden onto the lower and middle classes will only degrade those classes' economic circumstances further, which will generate even less revenue.

Interest on the debt is about 8%.

But the real way to back out of SS and Medicare is to allow current workers to opt out of the system while current recipients should be cut but still given what they need as promised and any new workers given the only an opt in. The age eligibility should be raised.

And FYI If we raised taxes on the rich and corporate tax to 88%, middle class to 65% and poor to 25% We still could not sustain what we are spending much less pay down the debt. And when they talk about budget surplus or fiscal budget, that doesn't include the national debt. Obama's fiscal budgets are 3 times what Bush was. @thirty2ncountin Again you need to research and think before you type. The US Constitution does provide for the general welfare of its citizens. Now general welfare is concerned with living standards. Social security is there to provide for protection against extreme poverty for the elderly. Can you imagine 85 year olds as a common place theme having to compete in a skewed psuedo market for jobs? Who is going to hire them on a regular basis?

@olzt100 What the fuck ever. "General welfare" has been used to mean what ever is convenient to any given politician since FDR. Who's to say overspending on defense isn't for the "general welfare"? Hell, why not have a Department of Full Employment to provide for the "general welfare"? You're also going under the assumption that 85 year old's would actually have to compete in the market place. If they had planned their futures they wouldn't have to work at 85. And THAT is not the govts job.

@thirty2ncountin And I would assume that a country and freedomehas been used since the writing of the Declaration of Independence to mean what ever any would be politician wants it to be also. Would you join or be a member of country where you have no basic support? I didn't think so. So the Republicans just want to pull basic support from anyone they don't see as a benefit to their wealth building. And planning to be rich or self sufficient does not make it happen.

@thirty2ncountin Furthermore you apparently are one of those people who are clueless on the best use of government. Government is best used as an intermediary to societal problems. Government is not the solution, it is the mediator and enforcer against extreme measures. It would be an extreme measure to leave the elderly on their own because of societal ignorance. Why don't we all go tell our employers that we need a 20% rasie every five years because we are going to get old. That's planning!

@Zander73 I'm satirizing anyone and everyone that believes there is a difference between corporatism, big goverment, or soc-called "democracy". We are supposed to be living in a country that the rule of law defends the rights of the individual (i.e. a republic) over all of those.
The fact is the rich and powerful enjoy pitting us against everyone or using crisis as an opportunity to demand more power or money from the power and downtrodden.
This isn't "change" at all.

@EckoStream Two wars can be afforded because there is open ended borrowing on war. The wars of today can make the US the poorest and most military weak nation in the world in the future. The only thing we may have to fight with, if we don't sell them or lose them, is nuclear arms. When countries stop funding our war machine, we have no money to fight with. The rich aren't paying for wars. That is why the money is borrowed heavily. The debt is left for ordinary Americans.

Maybe when they try to take-away Social Security and Medicare after having bailed out the banks etc. and instead of cutting the bloated defense budget, the country will finally wake-up and realize these bastards for what they are.

Cenk has probably never listened to Tucker b/c by risk he is referring to allowing individuals to take care of themselves and not have the government provide retirement savings but Cenk looks for any reason to go off on irresponsible banks which are legitimate when its relevant. he managed to completely ignore context. He managed to not mention SS and medicare account for 45% of government spending and have no actual reserves. The systems are by definition a ponzi schemes.
