I was there both nights it was memorable and chaotic but they did it and it stuck 2 finger up to our so called judicary . Man if Pete (I'm not a junkie) Doherty was around in them days He would have been locked up and the key thrown away lol
I think this performance is from the period in which Hugh Cornwell was in Pentonville nick and if so hopefully the gig at Finsbury Park where I saw them and my Joy Division story started. Anyone think so as well or can confirm?
H Stevie - yeah Joy Division were great fans of the Stranglers and were greatly influenced but not in a plagarist sense, clearly Joy Division expanded a great idea and took it to places the Stranglers could never go both in mood and image.
@almklit ha ha ha , wot you on? joy division, pete hook, play by numbers guy, and a catalogue that is miniscule compared to the glers. ya silly person. they couldnt even try to emulate the glers, they did not have the musical expertise, the intellect o r the creativity. look where are they now? and the glers, still going strong.
@femellabates and everyone, I think I've been misunderstood, I am a massive Stranglers fan and only have Joy Divisions best of. I was merely trying to say that the Stranglers constantly changed whereas Joy Division pretty much stole the Stranglers image during 1977/78 and the sound, but expanded it and went off on one path. I was saying in fact the Stranglers influenced so much but never received recognition. My early post was clumsily phrased.
@almklit - You guys clearly don't know the Stranglers let alone Joy Division if you think they stole the Stranglers signature sound. Ian Curtis couldn't stick the Stranglers so he certainly wouldn't have ripped their sound. JD left with legendary status not pub rock band. And that's coming from a massive Stranglers fan like me.
@NewWavePunk It clearly states in John Robbs blog that Peter Hook was a huge fan and I have read JD used to see them live. It was Mr Wilson who hated the Stranglers because of the way they treated music journalists, and of course the bust up's with Clash and Sex Pistols. Tne Stranglers became the band they loved to hate, when in fact at the start they had a lot of respect. The early Stranglers sound was a heavy influence on Joy Division (and on U2 as well) It's an official fact.
@NewWavePunk Yes I know that Ian was not a big fan but the rest of the band were. On w w w. gibson. c o m there is a feature entitled 'Peter Hook talks Joy Division and Bass heroes and states that his bass playing is essentially JJ Burnel from the Stranglers and the pose of Simonon from the Clash. There has been a lot of misinformation regarding the Stranglers over the years and a lot of hype attached to the importance of the other bands. However The Stranglers did'nt help themselves either.
Awesome.
