It's probably more than 40 years since I've heard this. I was only 12 years old when it was around and I loved it but for some reason I never bought the record. The tune had actually stayed in my head through the years! It was wonderful to hear it again!! Makes me teary eyed!!
Great song! I've heard for first time in a Mike Melvoin's moog performance. The harmonic line is beautiful! Chromatic passages have some original in this style. The melodic line is very singable and very well worked, no too much simple, no too much complex. Is a great song! Hugs
Mike Melvoin was a huge Orpheus fan and studied the work of Bruce Arnold. He had recorded several other Orpheus covers during his Moog sessions and it is rumored that these recordings will soon see the light of day when his "Plastic Cow Goes Moooog" album is re-released next year - on vinyl only!
Howie Hersh played the bass on the fourth Orpheus album released in 1971 and was also part of the Orpheus reunion at the 1988 Boston Music Awards. His playing on "Monkey Demon" and "It Gets Worse" is amazing. In the PMP Network interview, Bruce called Howie a "musical genius" and said he and Bernard Purdie were the only musicians he completely trusted in the studio and on stage. Howie later went on to work with Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, New Edition and countless other artists.
One of three great Orheus songs that picked up Huge airplay on all the Drake RKO stations,Sadly the songs never became the stone smashes they should have been.I played the heck out of this for over three weeks as a Hitbound It just never really took off...Too bad what a great song!!
The same story can be told for every Orpheus single and album. It seems like each successive generation of fans grow more perplexed (and even quite angry) about how this music could have gone virtually unnoticed. One day someone will discover the answer.
I'm surprised that this song hasn't been coverdd by Beyonce or Alicia Keyes. Love the way the chords rise on the chorus and then subside like the tide before heading into the next verse. A tinge of meloncholy that grows with age.
Interesting song--I like it. It's kind of a hauntingly beautiful melody. At 240p it is in mono, but at 480p it is in stereo! Thanks for posting this--great job!
HI, THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT, YES IT IS A GREAT SONG, BRUCE ARNOLD FROM ORPHEUS, WILL ALSO LIKE YOUR COMMENT, HE IS A FREQUENT VISITOR TO THE SONGS I HAVE LISTED.KEEP LISTENING !
This was one of my favorite songs during my senior year of high school in 1969. The haunting trumpet notes at the opening and closing of the song will remain in my soul forevermore. Truly an underrated, underacclaimed, unappreciated classic. Thanks for posting this.
A bargain bin classic, probably purchased at a Fred Meyer store....they were famous for those 57 "centers". For some reason those MGM cut-outs were prevalent in the Pacific Northwest back in the early 70's....
Thats funny you mention that. I live in Portland, OR and I see these records quite often in used vinyl stores. But when I go and check their availability online they are listed as being quite rare. I guess I'm just a lucky Northwesterner. Orpheus is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands of all time. Such unique and beautiful soft pop music.

My cousin Howard Hersh was Bassist on one of their albums. Nice to see such great music kept alive.

An Orpheus LP in the bargain bin? Say it ain't so. Seriously, your taste in American music is impeccable. I treasure my Orpheus LPs
every bit as much as my Beatles collection.
