i guess there comes a time when you have to take notice...i know many drummers that are reluctent to check a drummer like dave and rank him where he should be....at the top...like a bass player also....scot ambush....these guys are freaks...to say the least...they should be earning top dollar and creaming it...it probably hasint come that easy...to earn a living playing fusion style jazz...but these pricks should be millioneres in my books

I thought jazz was for old people and elevators, and then I saw THESE GUYS in the 90s. My life was changed in an instant. Weckl is an absolute MONSTER. Chops, creativity, time, sound, taste, and especially DYNAMICS. I hope to be HALF this good someday!

Haha I thought the same thing till I heard progressive jazz and jazz fusion...like Holdsworth, Corea, Spyro Gyra, and my favorite Greg Howe! Oh and im only 19 years old! I have liked so many genres through out my years as a teen, even the ones I thought I would never like (jazz)...whats next? I feel I love every genre, and can't find any others!

Dave Weckl quite simply is drumming.

I know we all love to go round and round surmising who was and/or is the best, but in my personal opinion, as an over all, well-rounded drummer Dave just has it all.

I've played for years and heard thousands of drummers but only a handful can do to me what this brother does.

Can you imagine if this dude ever missed a beat or worse, DROPPED A STICK! LoL

Such intense arguments. wow. No one can judge the best without personal opinon playing apart. Dave Weckl may be considered to be the closest thing to the perfect drummer. But who is to say that perfection has the most character, and who is to say it doesn't. It is all about preference.

@ELBROSE Way disagree with you on that. Buddy Rich, to me (and I'm young!!) emulates what the "perfect" drummer should be. The same could be said about Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Zach Hill, etc, etc. We should all just call these guys what they really are... Unique, amazing, talented, skilled. Not shitty words like "best"

OK I like weckl I have all his CD's and 1 DVD. But as a drummer I cannot ignore the fantastic timing from Chick Corea. Weckl always has played with virtuoso piano / keyboard players. Chick Corea elevates his players.

Don't get me wrong 1) doesn't matter who is better, 2) Chambers is unbelievable and 3)it's close in any regard, BUT to say that anyone on earth is better than Weckl to me is just plain insanity.

His fluidity and transition is unparalleled, period, point blank!!!

I really think he is the best who ever lived and that includes you know who! Yes Buddy!

I agree when you talk about fluidity and transition. But, when you say that maybe dave is the best ever lived, I think you're forgetting Mr. Colaiuta...what would you say about him instead? I give you some suggestions:

1) unbelievable use of suddivisions, shifting and all that stuff that make vinnie's phrasing the most original (I think), never trivial, always surprising and still MUSICAL in all styles of music I've ever heard...

2) would you talk about his technique? ^_^

I agree with you totally. Drumming, as well as music over all is subjective, hence this was obviously just one man's opinion.

The beauty of music and musicality is the fact that there is enough talent to go around.

Vinnie is not to be denied in light of his amazing ability and all he's contributed.

dennis chambers is a scary freak! i agree - i think he grooves a bit better than weckl, who overdoes it at times, but is still phenomenal. two of the best at what they do, along with vinnie colaiuta.
