I believe it is the battery pack for the microphone. Most people have the wire run down their back and the pack is attached to their waist or belt.

This is prolly my fave Heart song from the entire 80s era (as well as Passionworks, which is largely underrated). It's such an anthem and fun to HOWL with Ann. Love love love.

(although, I admit, 'Alone' has it's own special quadrant in my heart. 11 years old when I first heard it, it has tender memories attached to it that I won't ever let go)
