If you use triacs (look up about SSRs) then you can switch faster, and you won't burn out your relays as quick. they're silent too so won't have that annoying click!

@davidharryprosser Yeah I have, many are expensive. A buddy and I have designed some new Mosfet based DIY SSR components. PWM Dimming is very close!

@webdext Yeh so long as you got enough controllers to PWM everything, good luck! In the mean time Triacs (rather than specific SSRs) can be fairly lower cost, i think i picked some up for about 60 pence ($0.35?) each

I like a challenge! Also, I was getting into electronics and it seemed like a good project. I've been into doing visuals for a long time, and this is just an extention of that - also my setup cost me very little. Probably $100 in parts just for the relays misc electronics parts, and I wrote the software myself so that was free. I've already got a couple arduino's built for next year and I've been doing a lot of experimenting - microcontrollers rock!

Did the light sequencing have anything to do with the music, or did you just select that for the video? Either way, nice work.

Yeah I specifically sequenced the lights to that song. It would have been much harder to make an interesting sequence and fit it to music the other way 'round. It's pretty much the same way traditional animation is done - record the score first then storyboard & flesh out the different sequences.

this is amazing, the music was great but got worse when i realised it was a remix of one of those crappy christmas songs, i hope u didnt make it yourself.

One question: did the music play or was that added into the video?

Hehe, yeah I didn't make the track. It's surprisingly difficult to find decent Christmas drum'n'bass remixes I found about 20 songs prior to this one that were even worse if you can imagine. Holiday spirit and all.

And yea the music did play at the same time. If you can only see the house though it kinda looks like I'm trying to give my neighbors seizures. heh.

Next year I want to try to do my own remix and take more of a "big picture" approach to the light design. We'll see how it turns out!
