I hope these guys make a stand back up. Evolution hasn't called it quits on them just yet. They still have extremely well patterns and color to hide. That, and they are the freakin cutest little dudes I've seen. haha.
It sounds a bit harsh, but when you see these parrots, it just seems, as if they weren't meant to survive. I mean... "described as the heaviest, fattest and least able to fly parrot"? That doesn't really sound too promising.
But well... My personal opinion is, since humans are interferring with nature the whole time, anyways (also humans are a part of nature, so...) it would really be a shame to let those be extinct.
They're meant to survive as much as anything else was. They were getting along just fine until humans showed up and screwed up their entire universe by bringing in mammalian predators.
Don't be so childish. They evolved in an environment where the only predator was a giant eagle (now several centuries extinct). There were no mammalian predators until humans showed up and brought them into the environment.
@amerboy22 Maby your grandchildren will have this opportunity. For now they keep every birds as they need to avoid further reduction of the kakapo's gene pool. Otherwise inbreeding depression might cause it to go extinct.
@Joeisreason That was Mark Carwardine who managed to get his head humped by a giant parrot, yes. It was on 'Last Chance to See' and you can find it on YouTube.
"least able to fly parrot"
dunno why but it sounds so much funnier than just "flightless"

Something tells me they will be pets in the future. The islands they need to be on cant have any predators.
