this is bullshit i went to local hobby lobby and they had no leather. went to tandy leather and they had no leather pieces under $100. i mean fu** me!
Just a tip: wrap your gun in clear food wrap, then stretch the leather around it, it'll fit the actual gun better. And take a piece of thick wire (thick metal coathanger works) and tape it to the top of the gun between the front sight and rear sight, using a strip of duct tape, before your stretch the leather - that way you're molding in a sight channel into the holster.
Thanks for the series on the Glock holster! Very thorough and inspiring. I have made leather sheaths for some of my fixed blade hunting knives. I've always wanted to go from skin to tanning to the finished product...time! You're right, it's hard work but very satisfying. Love that leather smell! Maybe I'll give a pistol holster it a try. Keep up the good work! dj PS Buying one IS easier, but not nearly as satisfying, guys! If you don't get it, you don't get it.
@SuperMrnobody A hand stitched holster is worth $100-$150 minimum... I'ld say its worth making. Look up custom holster prices. Thanks fo rthe comment. Oh, that $40 will build a few holsters and many knife cases.
@dnahoghunter i don't even know where to leather and i don't know that kind of stiching but u do make nice holsters. i did not know making one was this complicated
@SuperMrnobody He said it cost him about $4 for the materials. (or I'm sure some people might spend up to $10) The tools that add up to $40 can be re-used for many years.
So for less than $10, you can make a holster and feel good about doing it yourself. You can also make a design that nobody else in the world has.
I do wish they would change the pilot hole or whatever... through the frame. The waxy thread always gums it up like you described. I like your method of getting around the problem.
nice work with the holster. I've got to tan another hide and get started on this project.
In Gordon Liddy's autobiography, Will, he describes fitting a holster to a pistol by wetting the leather, then packing the gun in Vaseline and placing it inside a plastic bag. Then he stretched the leather around the protected gun and left it to dry.
@dnahoghunter That remindes me of the old joke about the drunk in an old west bar who comes in and shoots the cigar out of a mans mounth. The barman advises him to modify the gun by quickly removing thecartridges, the front sight and the spur from the hammer then advises he get some axle grease and smear it all over the gun . The drunk askes "why would I do that to my gun" and the barman explains that when Wyatt finishes his drink, he is going to shove that pistol right up your rear end.
Now this I like! I always thought about doing my own repairs on my tool belts through the years too. I wouldn't mind making a custom holster for my screwgun too because the one I have is sloppy and often puts pressure on the trigger wasting battery life. Good info....looking forward to the next installment.
@AntiHuntersLoveMe You can do it!!! Just get a needle, the push needle and some catgut and you are in buiesness! I fixed alot of stuff on my equipment. I'll post the next vid in a few days.
@TheSimpleMan81 I dont know, more than I can pay. Ive been told custom hand stiched holsters are not cheap. This way, I can make it just the way I want.
@CDNBadass I had an old 77 F100. I put a 302 in it, rewelded the mounts, I was 17. The engine sat crooked. When I had to change the oil, I had to remove at least one motor mount and jack that side to remove the oil plug. Wrench work takes time...
@LoneStarCreekRanch dont apologize Robert! I need the practice and it make good vid. I'm the one who missplaced it. If It shows up, I'll have a spare!
