I don't think she's singing it badly, it's just the lyrics are so incredibly awkward that I don't think it'd sound all that great in English regardless of who was singing it. She does have a gorgeous voice.
When I first heard her sing, I turned towards my homeboy beside me and mouthed to him "What the fuck?! O:<" I just could not believe, for the life of me, that a human being could sound like that; it was beautiful <3
i love how the majority of the people who say "OH MY GOD THE JAPANESE VERSION IS BETTER" probably don't even speak japanese outside of the word "konnichiwa"
@Walladreyn I think you don't necessarily need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the mood set by the tone of the singer's voice according to your personal taste
i was here for this concert, i really enjoyed her version but everyone chastises me for that, saying the original is better. people generally like the first version they experience better... but i agree that her pronounciation of suteki da ne is horrible, lol.
i prefer the japanese version. i can feel more emotion and a sad atmosphere that kinda makes me cry..but, this one is good too..though i feel more lighter in this version..
Susan Calloway is awesome, but i have to say any FFX fan would say the japanese version is far superior. Nonetheless, Susan Calloway's FF14 Answers is spectacularly jaw dropping.
At times, I feel like she sounds a bit "broadway" or disney, like when she sang Melodies of Life. But I can see why Uematsu chose her. She reminds me of Risa Ohki from Final Fantasy Pray. Susan should have sang Once You Meet Her and Theme of Love too. It's perfect for her voice. Anyway, she owned english Suteki da Ne.
Here's my two cents. Susan doesn't necessary destroy it, she just creates a different tone to the piece. Susan does have a good voice. Rikki's voice isn't what makes me prefer the Jap version. It's the elegance of the words. When translated and arranged as they were by Susan, they are far from elegant. It's that combination of the amazing, emotional music and the elegant language that creates the masterpiece that is Suteki Da Ne.
Umm yea i just heard the Japanese version live and she sounds awful. Her vocals compared to Susan.. are u serious.. u ppl really truly believe the Japanese version is better? You need your ears checked.
is everyone racist here? everyone just seems to say the "original japanese" is better... do you guys just make bias judgement with no sense of musicality in you? do you guys learn music at all?
@kitsune87 In your opinion, yes she "destroys" the song. However, there are plenty of Final Fantasy fans who love Susan's version of this song. Finally, a good English version is officially made and in my opinion, it's as good as it gets.
I really do love Susan C's interpretation of these great songs but she must do something about her distracting hand movements that seem like she is pounding her thighs or other strange stuff. She is amazing though.
This was one of my favorite performances of the night. I've never been a fan of the Japanese version's vocalist's style, so I wasn't sure what to expect of the English version. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Susan's performance here completely changed my opinion of the piece as a whole for the better, and I look forward to it being on the Distant Worlds II CD.
@FenixDown83 i totally agree, considering this was the first time i had heard the song. this song was what actually inspired me to play the entire game (yes, i'm behind and i'm sure people will give me sass for admitting it too.)
So beautiful

I love her singing and she sang really well!!
but for certain songs that "need" to be sung in japanese
it better be sung in japanese.....
it this case, english SUTEKI DA NE lost the kind of sad feeling of 島唄(shimauta) that can be found in jp version.
