@lukeharris92 First off I'm sorry for the slow reply, has your fish recovered?
I would do everything you can to get your water quality up to par, bring your water into your LFS and have it tested and do regular water changes. If you are using pimafix make sure to remove your activated carbon and follow the instructions. Sometimes you need to repeat the treatment cycle for meds. If all else fails I would try the method above but its the last thing you should try..
Stuff like that is not needed and so are medications. Fin rot is mostly always caused by bad water conditions, such as small spikes in ammonia. In order to treat fin rot, you need to get your water back to perfect quality as treatments don't fix water quality.
Once that is done, then you can start adding medication to kill the bacteria. As i have a siamese fighting fish, I do not use medication. I use plain old aquarium salt which prevents further infection and stops the rot. :)
@Narny105 Yes you are correct. Normally restoring water conditions and adding salt to help repair the slime coat will do the trick without medication. Unfortunately none of the normal methods, including meds, worked and the fin rot persisted for a very long time. This guy was very old and was a "last ditch" effort to stop the infection. He went on the live for another 4 years.
@rehtorbF03 that's good to know :). I personally find fish one of the hardest animals to treat... and people say they are low maintenance, they are very mistaken :D
