the problem is not the tubes analogy...if you're really looking for a funny analogy then "series of tubes" is ok...the problem is that the guy using this metaphor is the same guy who authored an internet-related bill in the senate...this would be comparable to a bio teacher telling me that exercise "melts" fat away, it's an ok analogy, but i expect that from a diet pill infomercial and not from a bio teacher

The analogy was probably presented to Stevens by an intern, which at the time made sense. If you listen to the rest of his talk, and have an understanding of general computing principles, he was so off target and absolutely murdered the analogy. He doesn't have any understanding of the internets.
