i was there in the day this was one ground breaking tune a lead up to when E was proper and clean and the raves were free !! thank god i was there in the day listen and enjoy !! BRISTOL POSSE !!!
i wonder how many samples were used by Martyn and Steve on Just Give 'Em Whiskey ? or on the whole of the Colourbox CAD508 album for that matter ? Anyone have any idea ? of course in 1985 no-one bothered getting clearance to use samples, it was Mr Waterman who started all that.
It's true that there are a few different (radio edit) versions of this great track. This version is the version I also have on the original vinyl with the black, white and red cover. It's B-side (Anitina) is also different from the versions I hear on Youtube. MARRS sampled about 26!! songs in this one. Its phrase Pump Up The Volume is by Eric B. And Rakim's I Know You Got Soul @ 30 sec.
this must be a newer remix cause i have the actuall record when this came out yea im that old and near the end it sayes a few times mars needs wemon its really awsome i like it better than this mix but can find it
Can't believe it's on youtube!!! :D HAHAHA!!! This is the first song I've ever loved, when I was two! Wow thanks a lot chiefobeef for bringing me this childhood nostalgia :D
I still love this track after all these years. I was only born in 1979 so wasn't even ten when this came out! I loved the track even then but the video did scare me a little bit on Top of the Pops when it was at number 1!
Amazing record!!! Didn't loose it's power after all these years. And while most of the samples are now recovered I'm still searching for that *last* unknown sample. Please help me and take a look at my video Marrs - the final sample hunt !!
I don't get the 2 min 40 banned sample i did not here anything worth banning. it's just some chicks voice. Now if the sample Sounded like her making belch noises or her saying some thing like fuck me side ways then yea.
It's not banned because it's offensive, but because the sample was not cleared and the copyright holder doesn't want that sound used on this song. So it's a rare thing to be able to enjoy it.
Speaking of Pump Up the Volume I don't understand why this song was never included in the "Pump Up the Volume" movie soundtrack back in the 80s with Christian Slater. It only seems fitting.
Legendary in it's day - and this is the only version on You Tube that has the (if I remember correctly) banned "Roadblock" sample at 2.40.
After this original version got the copyright lawyers working overtime over all the samples, subsequent watered-down remixes just failed to capture the essence the original track. This, however, is just fantastic.
Yep - Pete Waterman and your lawyers eat your heart out!! This is awesome, the original & the best!! Top quality bassline - old skool classic choon!! Thanks for post Chiefobeef ! 5*.
I just had to listen to the "other" version 5 times before I found this. Amazing how removing 5 seconds from a song can totally fuck it up. Agreed, fuckin' bangin' choon and excellent upload. Hail to the Chiefobeef, baby.
God to think i was 17 when this record was hot..just some of tracks i remember feeling at the club at that particular moment were: cookie crew's "rok da house", public enemy "rebel without a pause", stetsasonic "talkin all that jazz", housemaster boyz "house nation", eric b "paid in full", rhythm is rhythm "the dance"&"nude photo"..there was just SO,SO much INCREDIBLE house AND hip hop AND rare groove AND detroit techno in '87-'88.. everyone was feeling it all together. Nothing like it since..
Well, not really. Do a bit of research and you'll find that your claim is inaccurate. Go listen to some Double D & Steinski (for one) and then get back to me...
This way we could mention Bach... I've checked Wikipedia. Double Dee & Steinski: hip-hop producers who achieved notoriety in the early 1980s for a series of sample-based collages known as the Lessons, which are still well-regarded today as early underground hip-hop classics. Although they never had a hit record... MARRS: "Pump Up the Volume" (1987) was ... a number-one hit in the UK and is generally regarded as a significant milestone in the development of British house music and music sampling.
Bach? What are you on about? As for M/A/R/R/S' influence on "British House", I'm a little skeptical on that one. Certainly British house (and I'm assuming you're referring to Acid House in particular) was more influenced by Detroit techno than "Pump Up The Volume", and other forms of house would have been more inspired by Chicago house. I'm curious - which of "today's many genres" were you referring to in your previous comment?
I was referring essentially to techno, house, and trance. But you're right in the sense that there is no one standalone origin - there must have been many-many influences which evolved today's music. Among them is this song (Pump up the Volume). But I think there is no debate in that its place is outstanding. It had a huge influence mainly due to its popularity. A peak of the "pyramid"...
I remember when this came out. I was just another teenage watching VideoHits early one Saturday morning. Monumental piece of music, no matter how it was made. Fantastic clip - just love seeing all that old Soviet and US space footage.
How sad nowadays finding the original UK mix is sooo hard to find. One of my favourite parts where the sampled "Roadblock" was edited on the re-packaged copies of the single and song as well. The US mix is OK but the Uk version tops it all! Thank you for posting the original single version of this video a million and ONE!!!
I loved this video when it came out. Not for the music, but for the amazing footage featured in the video! This was before the internet, and you couldn't just "google" images and video of NASA training. Nerds naition wide stared with gaping maw at this video without hearing a note of music.
Nation wide, nation! Do I get bonus 'Nerd ' points for spotting that one? My jaw was slack yet my ears were on track, what a number! The definitive original house number. Not Mrs.Brown at #42, no sir! Saturn V engine was the business, yea!! #1 Poop pickers ; j
Yea, I spelled nation wrong, it was a typo. As for the rest of what you said....WHAT?????I have no idea what you are talking about, and does nobody else but you!
Yea, it was a hypo but Nerds need points, where are mine? My point being that not all Nerds are unappreCIAtive of bustin' tunes, take me for example! I was astounded when the number and video came out!! It was fantastico and is still worthy now.
House number, you don't get that? "Saturn V" nothing to do with Apollo 440 or Goldie ; it did drive the astronuts to the Moon. It's the huge tall white tube thing with flames coming out of the bottom. "Poop pickers" is a 'nod' towards Alan 'Fluff' Freeman R.I.P. 'cept his term was "pop pickers". How do you know that I know what I'm talking about, or that no one else does? Huh, huh, huh??? LOL... : )
