Just one thing interferes with the beautiful views. Why there are so many private cars on these old streets, inside the city walls? Is it really impossible to get rid of them in this historical place?
Actually it did _not_ go unscathed during WWII - 40% of it was lost.
wikipedia: Bombing_of_Rothenburg_in_World_War_II
It went unscathed of modern development because it was abandoned and "sleeping" for so many years after the terrible Thirty Years War, so from the 1630s to the early 1900s when artists romanticized it's ruins and turned it into a tourist sight for the world to see and help fund it's rebuilding.
Unscathed isn't really 100% correct, the eastern part of the old town was destroyed by an air raid of the USAAF on March 31 1945, resulting in the destruction of ~40% of the old town's buildings.
If you watch for example at 0:12 you can see stones with the names of donators written on em, the part of the city wall where you find those stones was reconstructed after WW2.
But yes the main sights in the western part of the old town etc. survived the war undamaged.
Very cool video, thanks for sharing. I was just there last week. I was surprised to see it on a map. Just next to the border of Poland and north of the Czech Repulb. Beautiful city, bldgs from the 1600's. The whole city looks like this....street after street. Imagine its even more beautiful with some snow. Main chruch in the square is dated 1621...All a 2 hr train ride from Munich.
