Excellent singing by the two soloists but again Solti proves he is not a natural Berlioz conductor, difficult to judge the chorus as the recording is not very good.
Van Dam est excellent ... qui a jamais entendu les voix de l'enfer pour en juger ? On aimerait cependant que Solti fût plus tourmenté ... mais quelle profusion de détails, surtout dans les basses !!!
This is the Chicago SO under Solti at a BBC Prom at the RAH in (IIRC) the early 90s - because I WAS THERE! It is to this day one of the greatest concerts I've ever attended.
José Van Dam c'est la finesse dans l'interprétation... Mais il n'a pas une voix très ample ce que l'on pourrait attendre d'une basse plus noire dans ce répertoire là
C'est un Goleau merveilleux, où la brillance de son timbre fait merveille et sert magnifiquement Debussy, mélodies de Ravel. Dans Boris ou Mephisto de Faust je regrette que ses moyens vocaux ne soient pas à la hauteur de son art.....
José Van Dam est un Méphisto absolument parfait à tous points de vue, d'une classe folle, diabolique sans en faire des tonnes ... Dommage que le ténor ne soit pas à la hauteur; belle voix, belle technique, mais très peu d'implication émotionnelle et de caractérisation de son personnage. Ah ! le casting parfait ... le réunira-t-on un jour ?
