This is actually "Hound Dog," by Leiber-Stoller, which got Sun in hot water. I'm not sur why Phillips decided to release the record. "Anser" records are of course allowable, provided it's original and only alludes to another record.
The owner of Sun Studio got fined 25 grand for recording this song. It is copyright infringement because it is exactly like Hound Dog with the lyrics replaced. He got out of debt once he sold Elvis Presley's contract to RCA. He lost in the end still I think.
The sound of Sun Music is so unique if you have ever been in the studio you could close your eyes and see this song being recorded. 706 Union is the closest thing to heaven when it comes to music
This record also caused Duke/Peacock Records owner Don Robey to file a lawsuit for copyright infringement where Sam Phillips had to pay (reportedly) $17, 000 and and i believe half of the publishing credit...
This "answer song" to Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog" by Rufus Thomas was the very first record featuring the Sun label to make the national charts. Went to #3 on Billboard's R&B charts in 1953. The next time Thomas would reach the charts would be for another Memphis label, Stax.
Guess what owner "almost" took up in the beginning, was an original Peacock Big Mama Thornton..? Way cool all the way!! I have a 78 copy of the same version myself (2nd ish [or IS it the 1st?] w/o "(The answer to Hound Dog)", but A-side is worn out totally.......
this is the coolest thing ever! i'm trying to learn the guitar parts off this and it's challenging (for me at least), like Jimmie Vaughan cubed. does anyone know who this guitarist is?
For the guitar parts use the 3rd string. Start off by hitting the 3rd fret and sliding to the 5th. Then 3,3 and 5. You gotta play around with the rest of the leads to get it right, but I'm doing this on an accoustic, so a tube amp will really help. =)

I'm pretty sure the guitarist is none other than the habulous Ike Turner.
flashdaddy1961 3 years ago
does this mean Turner would have produced the session as well?

Wow, very interesting. I have this record on Sun, but mine is 45 RPM. Got it from my Mom who worked at a radio station in the 50s.
