To blokes of a "certain age" this was an event, all piling dahn the Dominion on Tottenham Court Road on our 250's wiv L plates to watch the man! Long 'air, stretch jeans and white pumps, wheelies and the birds! Where did it all go so wrong Ha ha!
@rouxie8421There are two different endings to this film in circulation. The full version ends with David Essex lifting his arms in victory as his motorbike crosses the finish line. Seconds after he does so the bike begins to wobble, then spins out of control and crashes spectacularly. The second version concludes with a freeze-frame immediately after Essex crosses the line and raises his arms.
@steve01274 I watched the version where he crashes when I was a kid and the other one yesterday. I had no idea about two versions and could not understand why I had the idea from long ago about the crash. Thanx, I now understand.
The movie made me a huge fan of Suzuki and the bike used looks like a Gamma ...
@rouxie8421 The alternate ending was the U.S theatrical release, and also the version released on DVD in the U.K in 2003. The opening titles also differ.
Great memories I tried to get into the cinema but at 12 they knew I wasn't 16 it was a AA back in the day.....
The film echoes the Sheene (god rest him) / Roberts rivalry with Bazza racing in the clips ! Apparently the SDR was only a 125 Suzuki in flashy clothes....Had us fooled ! Today I own 5 motorbikes ride safe all !!
I've been frustrated for ages - not even my parents remembered this. I was 6yrs old and remembered the melody but nothing else. So tonight - and I don't know why - I looked it up on the worlds premier memory enhancer and here it is! Thanks for uploading. Will link or play for my olds and see if they remember it now. thinking about it - it's a wonder I've never broken myself on a bike. I don't ride 'em unless my legs are the engine.
my bro had a kawasaki and gave me a ride on the back wen i was a kid. i like bikes but my big dumb bro thought he would scare me by going 100miles per hour. i was only 12 and you can bet it shit myself. ask the car owner whose windscreen my poop hit when it flew out of my pants at 100miles per hour.
Yes it was a Barton Phoenix, which was built as a serious (though not very successful) challenger for the GP title. Essex wasn't allowed to ride it (insurance reasons) so his bike was a Honda Superdream mocked up to look like the Phoenix. I reckon there were lots of similarities between him and Barry Sheene.
the bike was built by barton motors in wales. it was a 750cc 2 stroke. i think it was a barton phoenix. some guy from harley bought the bike after the film.
Why is it essex always dies at the end of his films ?? at the end of silver dream racer he crashed into that siding and dies and at the end of stardust he has a drug overdose. Great actor though.
On the first dvd release of "Silver Dream Racer" they cut the ending, so the film ends and goes into the credits as soon as David crosses the finish line. The network dvd release is supposed to show both endings

I think the ending where he dies is very British. Stops the buggers flogging the idea to death Artistist over merciless money making!!
