As over the top as 300 was, it at least gave some sense of how 300 soldiers could block a narrow pass and hold off a huge invading army. This, on the other hand, is a bunch of extras wearing costumes that would get laughed at many Hallowe'en parties today, engaged in fight-acting that's truly Power Rangers caliber. Lucky this movie somehow inspired Frank Miller to produce his now famous comic.
@trilobright the depiction here is as historically acurate as could be done at the time. The Spartans uniforms, armour and helmets are accurate for the 5th century.Only the Persian immortals dark costumes should have been depicted in a more colourful aspect. Too bad so many have such a gross ignorance of classical history. However, what can you expect when comic books form the basis of ones education!
@jonjgibbs56 no the helmets are not the ones you would see at the battle of thermoplaye. also this was not the phalanx. the spartans where holding an verry narrow pass in thermoplaye, the phalanx was ATLEAST 10 rows deep. also there where 10000 other people with the spartans (700 soldiers also fought with the spartans till death) i can't dare to say it but...... i think 300 may be more acurate -_-
wtf there was no calvary that doesn't even look like a pass or 300 spartans that wasn't even a full phalax formation there helmets weren't made of bronze and there formation wan't 8x64 units it was like 2 times my fuckin ass
Frank Miller was a fan of The 300 Spartans, which inspired him to write 300, he baised the artwork on the images you see on Ancient Greek Pottery depecting battles. You want an accurate account read Heroditus' Histories, he wrote an entire account of the Greco-Persian Wars. 300 though did create a more accurate depection of Thermopylae at the time of the battle, since the actual site has changed drastically in terms of it's geography snce the war
Oh i remember this one, i always thought it was a great sword and sandle epic. About as realistic as 300, but at the the terrain is more believable. And Xerxes isn't 8feet tall!
this is much better than the new 300, their gear is perfect. I just wish, they formed a real phalanx of more lines and braced against the cavalry charge.
Check out the article 'PLEs and the West' by H. Michael Barrett, author of 'The Pioneer Little Europe Propectus.' It's all the proof you'll ever need that we are the moden Greeks.
For how bad the new movie is, at lest they don't form a single line. When I see thoose standing in one line with thoose short spears against cabalary I allmost feeel sorry for tham.
This tracks Herodotus well, but MAN. These guys knew nothing about hop lite tactics. None of this would have been possible. If it was a Calvary charge they would have been better off in deep ranks with locked shields and spears presented. Horses tend to rear when faced with such things. Also, the typical Spartan formations, at the time, were 8 plus (12 at times) deep. They were always incapable of forming up less that 4 deep. However, it's still way better than 300.
@ohzenbaaa I much prefer this movie to '300', by a long shot. These older movies had a more chaotic, realistic feel to them when depicting battle scenes. As you can clearly see among the Persian soldiers, once fighting started, confusion swept through the ranks like wind.
@BathorysGraveland I agree that the original version is better than its remake version. 300 is based on a graphic novel rather than historical facts. The military equipment are historically accurate as well. But the terrain is not accurate as Thermoplyae is a narrow path rather than an open plain. The battle although a defeat for the Spartans has delayed the Persians for 3 days allowing scattered Greek armies to regroup. The Persians later suffered a great defeat at the naval battle of Salamis.
@Junokaii Back then it didn't matter if you were left or right handed, since the shields were small, it was placed in your left hand to be able to block the man your left. (when in line) and the person on your right is expected to do the same for you, thus creating a chain of shields
This is pretty good if you consider it was made without special effects, computer-generated backgrounds and all the modern techniques that are used today.
@MrBuddydan worst line why? they actualy fought like machines, when do you think the lever was invented? You probably think that Steve Jobs invented it 20 years ago do you? I'm glad you wasn't inventor in ancient time, by now we would still use stones and flints...
@MrBuddydan THE SPARTANS LOOK SUPREME!! FULL FACIAL AND HEAD ARMOUR,FULL LEG ARMOUR AND ARM PLATED STEEL ARMOUR,FULL STEEL SHIELDS AND SWORDS,AND Sharp Javaline Spears and the Spartans Fight like "Machines, Super-Efficient Battlehard for the European-Greece-Democracies of the Serbian Balkans Supreme for Democracy for us ALL Europeans to live in Peace away from the Persians of Asia that Threaten European Spartan Democracies!!!!
