  • The combination of Stipe's vocals, Mills backing vocals+bass line, berry's drums, and Buckss guitar lines is so fucking magical!

  • I love these guys, i'm fucking depressed they disbanded!

  • is there any other live show where Michael dances like that? My wife loves it

  • R.E.M. was not a band.

R.E.M. was four soloists who played at the same time.

  • I love the two melodies in this song. One of my favorites.

  • Michael Stipe is sexy here. And this is my personal favourite era from them. 1983-1988.

  • Pete Buck.......simple guitar licks, and a lot of acrobatics

  • I want those sleeves.

  • I wish i had've been alive back then....

  • @peterbuckisgod i think the same thing... the thot comes to me many times throughtout the day

  • Early R.E.M. is arguably the best R.E.M. And this one is great.

  • A great band for a very few years.

  • Peter Buck kills!

When this came out Hair Metal and Synth Pop ruled.

Amidst all the garbage there were a few great bands like REM.

  • @ 00:50 i cant tell if that's michael stipe or that girl who sang "the only way is up". besides that, CHILLS!!

  • So cool to see how they looked like at that time.. Michael Stipe with blond hair.. and he still had those great dance-moves ;-)

R.E.M. have always been cool.. and they WILL always be cool. The greatest band of the world.. EVER! ;-D

  • 2:33 i like this song, but i got to say that was funny as hell

  • man, Peter is such a fat old fart now. He hardly moves anymore. Maybe he has bad knees from all those jumps, twists, and deep squats. And Stipe? He got much cooler as he aged. Damn....WTF was that twisty dance he was busting out all about? Oh I know!......it was 1985 lol

  • I'd still love to know what exactly Mills is singing. We saw them play this in Ann Arbor either earlier that year or in 1986, and we spent 2 hours afterwards trying to work out what the heck Mills was singing! It's a great counterpunctual vocal: it rivals McCartney's on Help!, and that is no small praise!

  • Your worried aboutt Mills? Explain what the fuck Stipe was saying AT THE TIME. You can't give away a home in Deroit.

  • Love the Peter Buck movements. Reminds me of me when I practice in my band.

  • love these rare videos

  • i wish i was born 10 or 15 years before 1989...

  • LOL...don't ever wish to be older!

  • Peter's dance moves are so cool!

  • One of the best early live clips of them I've seen ... "there's a splinter in your eye" ... loving it !

  • I love this song :D

  • Michael is soo gorgeous! And one of my favourite songs! thanks for that!

  • Look at Stipe's dance moves! Such soft-shoeing!

  • very atypical 80's moves. We all did it like that ;-)

  • Blonde Stipe looks cute

  • yeah. why does he hate his hair?

  • He shaved it in Europe when the band was going through some tension filled times. He wanted to look like a monk almost, I read somewhere.

  • haha he was going bald. you can see it in later shows. before he decided to get rid of it.

  • oh sorry. its just that im so drunk.

  • great song never heard it live. his dance moves are cool!

  • I saw them many times from 1984-90, and they were so dynamic back then. This tour was awesome- they had Chronic, Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables to play, plus they always did cool covers like Witchita Lineman, Have You ever Seen the Rain, See No Evil, etc. As they matured they became better technically, but their early shows were much more electric; a tru event when they came around. People left those shows buzzing (and not because they were stoned:)

  • It's great to be a new fan to R.E.M. (as I am) and discover the music. I really think that hundreds of years from now, people will still be listening to their 80's albums.

  • @rawkus1167

Hey, so there's s small club of new fans :D

  • @orangeyeliner

haha yeah I know this sounds terrible but hated R.E.M all throughout the late 80's-early 90's because I was a Nirvana/Soundgarden/Pearl Jam freak at the time.

I picked up "AFTP" one day from my local library and as soon as Nightswimming ended I knew I was in love with this band. Im 25 years old and play this music for my 5-year old son all the time. Well this and of course my other favorite band, The Dead.

  • @orangeyeliner of course there is :D And I think, "all" rem is just great... the old, the mid, and new... and imo they always were "themselves" - people and so bands just change in time.

  • I wish I could have been around to see this show, but I wasn't even born yet!

  • Sweet! Thanks for posting this.

  • haha when peter does his spin at the beginning it looks like he almost falls into the drums.
