man, Peter is such a fat old fart now. He hardly moves anymore. Maybe he has bad knees from all those jumps, twists, and deep squats. And Stipe? He got much cooler as he aged. Damn....WTF was that twisty dance he was busting out all about? Oh I know!......it was 1985 lol
I'd still love to know what exactly Mills is singing. We saw them play this in Ann Arbor either earlier that year or in 1986, and we spent 2 hours afterwards trying to work out what the heck Mills was singing! It's a great counterpunctual vocal: it rivals McCartney's on Help!, and that is no small praise!
I saw them many times from 1984-90, and they were so dynamic back then. This tour was awesome- they had Chronic, Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables to play, plus they always did cool covers like Witchita Lineman, Have You ever Seen the Rain, See No Evil, etc. As they matured they became better technically, but their early shows were much more electric; a tru event when they came around. People left those shows buzzing (and not because they were stoned:)
It's great to be a new fan to R.E.M. (as I am) and discover the music. I really think that hundreds of years from now, people will still be listening to their 80's albums.
haha yeah I know this sounds terrible but hated R.E.M all throughout the late 80's-early 90's because I was a Nirvana/Soundgarden/Pearl Jam freak at the time.
I picked up "AFTP" one day from my local library and as soon as Nightswimming ended I knew I was in love with this band. Im 25 years old and play this music for my 5-year old son all the time. Well this and of course my other favorite band, The Dead.
@orangeyeliner of course there is :D And I think, "all" rem is just great... the old, the mid, and new... and imo they always were "themselves" - people and so bands just change in time.
The combination of Stipe's vocals, Mills backing vocals+bass line, berry's drums, and Buckss guitar lines is so fucking magical!

R.E.M. was not a band.
R.E.M. was four soloists who played at the same time.

I love the two melodies in this song. One of my favorites.

Michael Stipe is sexy here. And this is my personal favourite era from them. 1983-1988.

Early R.E.M. is arguably the best R.E.M. And this one is great.

A great band for a very few years.

Peter Buck kills!
When this came out Hair Metal and Synth Pop ruled.
Amidst all the garbage there were a few great bands like REM.

yeah. why does he hate his hair?
eeayt 3 years ago
He shaved it in Europe when the band was going through some tension filled times. He wanted to look like a monk almost, I read somewhere.
rem857 2 years ago
haha he was going bald. you can see it in later shows. before he decided to get rid of it.
