Wow I'm so glad I saw the documentary "Finding Joe" because now I'm exposed to the intelligence of Joseph Campbell. It's like my hero's path led me here hehe :) bitly .com/syDsZQ
I love Joseph Cambell. Have any of you seen the movie Finding Joe? It is a beautiful documentary about his Hero’s Journey. It inspired me to follow my dreams and not let what other people think get in the way of that. Find your bliss!!! Thank you Joseph! findingjoethemoviedotcom

This man puts into words, and validates the unconscious reasons which informed my choice to become an atheist. As he said, I have pushed past the gods as fact, and now represent them as metaphor.
@TheSmackerlacker Your comment is interesting, because I think an atheist is one who interprets religion literally like a fundamentalist. If anything I would consider us enlightened, but I suppose semantics or lack of are up to the individual personality type.
@TheJamezMan Agnosticism and atheism are not mutually exclusive. I happen to be both atheist and agnostic. Maybe you should open that mind of yours a little wider, to air out those cobwebs.
@TheJamezMan I checked four dictionaries. Three of them defined atheism as the rejection of belief in God or gods. All four of them defined agnosticism as "A person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God".
It could not be more clear.
Perhaps YOU are the one in need of a new dictionary?
@TheSmackerlacker Agnostic, "One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism." "One who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god" Atheist, "a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings." There is more than one term and definition.
@TheJamezMan You're really committed to this argument, aren't you? Well, since you're so fond of dictionaries, perhaps you should look up the word "disbelieve", because I don't think it means what you think it means.
Better yet, instead of continually trying to undermine my position, you could state your own.
@TheSmackerlacker My position is simple: your ideas and ideals are relative to your reality tunnel, my differences come from my understanding. I'm interested to correlate the different versions to the same general aspects.
@JARvidz Well, thanks for the reply, it must have sparked some sort of interest in you, if i came off hopeless and dejected I'd only want to clear up that joseph cambell would not be my source of enlightenment, that is all.
@ryanneville123 But that is not all. "This guy is so confused and lost he's disillusioned himself into thinking he's found truth." Joseph Campbell has studied mythology and comparative religion for decades and he is simple sharing his world view and his findings. I just find your comment was unnecessary.
funny story... I have probably read the hero with a thousand faces maybe 3 times now cover to cover but I have never owned a copy (always found it in libraries) but the other day I was in a book store and found the most pristine copy in paperback. I looked at it at a distance and pondered buying it. As I reached to pick it up the theme from Star Wars came blarring over the PA system in the store.... talk about a sign to do something!! of course I bought it...
@uneedtherapy42 call to adventure: you see the book refusal of the call: you pondered buying it supernatural aid: star wars comes over the pa... get back to me with the rest of the story.
@alfieqatar , yes, he was wonderful. I'm reading "the hero with a thousand faces" now. A brilliant work. Nobody does it like Joseph Campbell. This book shows just how much we have forgotten about ourselves, knowledge that is of immense age and that tells us who we are. Without that knowledge, we are nothing but a bunch of neurotics and psychotics.
Just an FYI: If not for the tireless work of everyone at the Joseph Campbell Foundation, none of these clips would exist. People were hired to put these videos together from mountains of raw footage. Nothing comes for free The JCF is a not-for-profit organization running on a shoe string budget. Maintaining copyrights not only protects the foundation legally, but helps offset the cost of continuing to collate and publish unreleased material. There is a lot more to come. Please support the JCF.
I am surprised that more of joseph campbell's work is not available, and because of its brevity, the work that is shown misrepresents his overall work. Campbell's mission was not to change the world, but to change individuals. His work isn't changing anyone as long as its kept locked in some storage room. Don't be the Dragon Campbell speaks of that just likes to guard the things it will never use. Please make his intent to change individuals a reality.
Life is to be despised, its a sinful existence, and the body is the temple of sin. Why wouldn't God stress this? Its true. This guy is so confused and lost he's disillusioned himself into thinking he's found truth, when really his logic is leading to death. Sure enjoy your awesome life, and marvel at its mysteries unaware and blind.
@ryanneville123 I'd hate to know what kind of sad, pitiful life you live. If life is so despicable, why would Jesus (if that's the "God" you were so here referring to) have resurrected people during his earthly life after they had passed on? Wouldn't they be better off in heaven, basking in glory and perfection, instead of living out another dreadful death? Enjoy living in your cage built of mythology while I live my awesome life.
@mythical89 You would actually HATE to know about my life? Even if it is sad and pitiful? You assume that it is as an opening statement, as an insult? I don't think you would hate to know, perhaps rather you would thrive to know, it would give you some kind of twisted reassurance. For what? I couldn't imagine the possible motives of a hatred filled heart. You completely misinterpreted my point. Those who understand, understand more, and those who remain ignorant, will never know the truth.
All the great traditions/religions of the world are pessimistic. It's interesting how Campbell points out that this view actually evolved contrarily from a more optimistic archaic past.
Enjoyed reading Campbell's books. The myths, legends and such! I like the discussion here, about fighting against our joy, as if it were somehow 'wrong', he's put a finger on it! Thanks for sharing this clip : )
FYI: the reason the JCF is blocking other people from posting clips is because in the past someone put together an unauthorized compilation of his interviews and sold it. The JCF feels that compilation was not arranged the way JC would've wanted it. Personally, I think this man's help in any format is good thing, and hopefully would lead people to find the authorized versions the JCF is putting together. Instead of building their audience they are shooting themselves in the foot.
I've been a lover of Joseph Campbell's work for many yrs and it has forever changed how I view the world. I'm so grateful for his brilliance, his enthusiasm and his dedication to teaching. Thank you for posting these clips up - I have missed being able to listen to his wonderful wisdom.
A plea to the JCF: For the good of humanity please post and make free to the world all recordings of Joseph Campbell that you have! There is no other teacher who can melt away religious misunderstanding the way Campbell can. A true boon to Humanity!
May I second that! I have been a member for 7 years now, and I cannot comprehend why you all would want to hold a monopoly on any Joseph Campbell material. Respect the man, spread his ideas.
To bad there isn't more of Joseph Campbell interviews on youtube. Would be , but some lil BITCH always cries copyright that not fair use BULL SHIT. Oh Well!
Every time I hear Campbell talk, or read one of his books I am astonished. I don't know of anyone alive today who has anything like his depth of knowledge, his wisdom, his enthusiasm for life and his ability to articulate them all with such clarity.
@MastersOfInfinity ...Well, i've never met Sagan, so i cant comment on him as a person! But i find his work very inspirational as well as informative!
I'm facinated by this "sinister organisation" you speak of...
I've only just been made aware of Joseph Campbell and find what he has to say most interesting!
The passion and clarity, and deep/wide perspectives of Joseph Campbell bring a voice of sanity and illumination to my life. Thanks for posting these fabulous video interview clips. He's the best!!!
Never has Christianity been so justly and eloquently put in its place.

rusty1491 6 months ago
@rusty1491 I understand that most theists do not take their religion literally in many respects, as I did not either, but that's kind of the problem.
As C.S. Lewis said, either Jesus was truly the son of God, or he was a madman. He really didn't leave any middle ground.
The same is true of all things religious. If you're not interpreting them literally, then what's the point?
More importantly, if you don't take it literally, then you're just making it up as you go, aren't you?

@TheSmackerlacker Being an atheist is being closed-minded. Agnostic is open-minded.

@TheSmackerlacker Atheist deny the existence of God, agnostics do not deny or abide.
TheJamezMan 2 months ago
@TheJamezMan Agnosticism is the position that nothing is or can be known about god. The key word here is KNOW. Agnosticism is about knowledge.
To be an atheist is to not believe. Atheism deals with belief.
It's apples and oranges my friend. There is little comparison.
Agnostics are not atheists with commitment issues.

@TheSmackerlacker Those definitions are totally incorrect, go buy a new dictionary.
