Actually, originally, v and u were the same letter. Somewhat like the same concept of y: sometimes it acted as a consonant, other times as a vowel. Strangely enough, there was no traditional "vuh" sound, consonant v sounded like a w. For example, in ancient Rome, You would have pronounced Venus "Wenus". Similarly, originally there was no j, only i which occasionally acted as a consonant, sounding like y. I hope you've learned something.
