I had similarily pitied Kaoru. Even though he knows that Hikaru likes Haruhi and that's normal, Kaoru's sad that he's drifting away from Hikaru. By the end of the anime it's almost easy to tell them apart because of their personalities compared to the flashbacks or the beginning of the anime where they really were rather identical.
