I saw this song performed on a few occasions, always very moving, and years later with a few more miles under my belt it means so much more than Jerry could have or maybe wanted to imagine given his genuine humility, to me and so many others who are just trying to find their way it's a timeless gift!
When I was 13, a friend and I stole 2 albums - The Who Sell Out and Grateful Dead. It took about 2 weeks of listening before I started liking then loving the Dead. The day before Jerry's passing I ordered tickets. The next morning a friend called to say she had heard the Jerry Garcia had died. I didn't want to believe it and spent a couple of hours looking for some news (I'm Canadian, so ...). When the sad news was confirmed, I couldn't even cry I was so sad. Thank you, Jer - so very much.
I find this song and Days Between just unbelievably sad... beautiful, but really sad... the songs seem to evoke a resignation that the end is near. It was like Jerry could feel himself winding down. And he really wasn't that old. I mean 53 is not that old. I know he lived a lot of life in his 53 years... a lot of wear on those treads and all, but I just can't help wondering how things could have turned out if he had gotten sober like Phil did.
@Apollo8rs and a 16 year old kid knows what about what? You're wealth of knowledge comes from where? Grow up and learn a few things, live a few more years kid then come back talking crap.
For all of you that were there that night, I love and miss you all. Especially my fellow drummers, those circles we created keep my heart beating on still to this day. **** To Jerry: There are no words that could capture the life that you breath into me everyday. I am so blessed to have lived in your time & grateful you showed me the way. I will never say goodbye, for you are not gone cause in my heart you will always stay.....

@65jackstraw95 Brother ive loved metal since the 80s all time fav (maiden). But the grass is always greener when Jerry is apart of ur life. I toured the Dead for 12 yrs and there was and never will be anything like it. it was church. The most spiritual awakening"s Ive ever known. The best part were all of my brothers and sisters for whom i shared it with every show and with 50 or 60,000 heads miracles happen. (Rainbow Shows Vegas) for instance. Odd, I had never heard this song before. Just now found it on you tube. I remember when I was a freshman in college, in 1972, and the first concert on campus that year was the Dead. I was already a big fan, but that really sealed the deal for me.
I saw bobby in alatic city a couple years ago at the tash hes lookin good but not many folks showwed dark star played the hilton the day before I was impressed
Man, i was born in the wrong era. I'm 21 and i cant stand music these days. It sickens me the amount of people that seem to worship this stupid little thing called dubstep, which i guess is trying to call itself music. There was never and will never be another band that can hold a candle to the Grateful Dead. Its funny how simply life becomes when you just sit down and listen to the music play. Happy Birthday Jerry. You were and always will be the KING
@PapaGeorgio89 I'm sure someone will correct this attempt at a quote by Bill Graham, but I believe he said that The Grateful Dead were not the best at what they do, but they're the only ones who do what they do.
My first show was at the Philadelphia Civic Center in 1973. Wake of the Flood was the current record then, I think. (been a few years you understand).
I grew up with original hippies, and I have to tell you, nothing feels like home like the soft warm velvet sandpaper of the dead on a summer night. Jerry, you might be dead, but we are always grateful.
Danced to this song with my Dad last month at my wedding. Such a beautiful song. I'll remember that moment always!!!!! Love you DAD & LY Uncle Jerry <3

So many great stories, touches my heart, I can remember a time long ago a bunch of us working in Yosemite, during the summer months & we all called in sick, hoped in a VW Bus and headed to Oakland for a show. We arrived a day early and stayed at the hotel 6, near by, seemed the whole hotel was there for G.D. Three of us couldn't get a ticket & as it happened so many times B-4 a miracle came upon us, & we all saw the show. (it was the Chinese new year show) To all my Yosemite Friends, Peace BWU
@MarksTravelTips HaHa I quit a job for that show!!! I tried telling them where I was going and they thought that wasn't such a good idea and wouldn't change the schedule... So anyway I lost that one but gained the world, plus I think I was at the 6 as well for one night anyway.
@emeraldxzotto I know what you mean. Back in the '80s the high point of our Summer was always a trip to Alpine Valley for the boys. It was a three day stand at least. The last time in '89 it was two on, one night off and another two! Wow, that was taxing. Anyhow, I quit several jobs to make those trips. Sorry, boss, but if you can't gimme the days off--I'm gone. Toodloo! I knew where my priorities were!
The Grateful Dead makes everything worth it. whenever i feel down i just play some of their music and suddenly i feel amazing... nothing else matters. thank you so much to everyone who keeps their music going!!
I've sailed and traveled and bummed around my fair share of waters ways and highways.... and i know there's only more to come. Its warms the heart to know that there's always a Dead Head somewhere near by in this world of turmoil. I hope to meet you all somewhere on down the road. Fair winds and Safe Travels to all.
I too am just recently being pretty much reintroduced to the Grateful Dead. I listened to them while in college in the early and mid 70's, but really didn't pay much attention to who I was listening to. But my partner of 7 years now was a touring Deadhead for years, although he wasn't even born until 1975! But he got me familiar with Jerry and beyond. So, I'm a bit like Confederado1 in being a latter day fan.
The thing is now is that I can certainly relate to So Many Roads.
@ Confederado.......My brother, you are never too old to enjoy it all. Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.............Thanks for your service to our country. I bid you goodnight (Alpine Valley 89).
I remimber this night so clearly, this gives me the chills. Seeing Jerry in that purple shirt w/ the wind in his hair. I miss the GD it was some of the best times of my life, tripping along with the band, I never wanted it to end. If you really ever saw, I mean SAW them, you know what I mean, they changed my life. I don't think I'll ever be that close to god or whatever IT was again, it was heaven.
I miss Jerry soooo much, the music has had a great impact upon my life since I first saw Jerry and the band in 1992 at Irvine Meadows when I pulled security during my marine Corp stint. I threw my security vest away and joined the crowd =)
@Adam1986London check out archive, click on browse by year, go to "1994" then look for 6-26-94...you will see whole shows, download the complete concerts or single songs from shows...enjoy...PEACE!!!
There is no other band before The Dead. No other artist like Jerry. Once I found the Dead all other music was eclipsed (yes stiil LOVE The Doors, Beatles, Dylan, etc.). I cannot remember when I first listened about 3 years ago because I was instantly hooked . I knew I found something timeless without any ceiling to its greatness. I will never see Jerry and it kills, but it makes the music almost more special: all I can embrace is the sound- the story. Not the man, only the legend.
I was lucky enough to have cool enough parents to take me to this show just after my 12th birthday. I thought the 177 degree heat would kill me but instead the Dead did! Thanks, guys...
The sad thing is.....this song only has 568,443 hits. You look at much of the music today and see millions of viewers....just goes to show that todays youth needs to be educated in the ways of the Dead!! Peace to all!!
@Sidewinder008 Good taste is not always a mass appeal thing. Don't we know that! This is one of favorite 300 or so Dead songs...even If Jerry Messed up the words , twice!
@Sidewinder008 The Dead was never everyone's cup of tea. Although the last thing on their mind was / is exclusivity, that is sort of the way it turned out. But the upside is one can find Dead aficionados almost everywhere. The day Jerry died (or the day after) I had to make a short business trip down I-75 but i needed gas somewhere near Findley Ohio and found a gas station with a van parked playing Dead music. Stayed about an hour. The crowd grew to about 50 -- at an obscure gas station!
@Sidewinder008 I often think the same thing. Unconciousness is on the rise and ignorence seems to reign. If people could grasp the words and the feel of this vibe, people would be so much more pleasent to be around. One of my best dead head friends has always said "if you dont get it, you just dont get it.
as gr8oneohio said: Jerry's words influenced and unlocked many minds and changed so many lives.....the only thing left out is that he continues to do just that for this generation and many to come. The Dead are an institution and Jerry is immortal......anyone who doesn't see that ...well ya gotta believe they will sooner or later :)
the beauty and peace ive felt from this song and many others a culture of ppl following them around trading and helping one another in a time and space we all belonged as one loving sharing it was a beautiful time to be in for the ppl who was there and did belong and do know, this oong is for all us jerrys kids ... bobby spit on me !!!
@devtrash Dev, look at it this way; we showered them with money to do something we enjoyed, and something that they derived joy from doing. I consider that an even trade :D
@devtrash Dev, look at it this way: we showered them with money to do something that we enjoyed having them do. I for one see that as an even exchange.
@devtrash you are simply a moron that was left in a garbage can as a child if you cant see that jerrys words influenced and unlocked many minds and changed so many lives and helped redefine a entire era and community that was full of love and happyness then you sir are totally clueless .... played you say i say you were played for not being there and not sharing the love and freedom so many of us felt im sorry for your loss in this cornerstone of life
@devtrash oo you must mean all that money they made off thier live shows that they set up a digital sound board for tapers to come in and hook thier DATs into so they could recieve and distribute the concerts for free at thier expense ya now i see what was i thinking them paying for a sound board so we could hook into it and get free music for ppl who didnt make it in but o im sorry becuase they made money from concert tickets and cds and merchendise i guess ppl eat for free **shrugs**
OMG, it was sooo hot that day. 132 down front on the floor by the stage. It was my birthday and though I felt sick I wanted to stay because I knew they'd play Terrapin. After break I went up to the bleachers and laid on them for the breeze. After they played it, I went and was sick and passed out in the bathroom. I made it to RockMed, found out I had heat exhaustion and barely heard the rest of the show. They did let my friends drive my van (Delilah) up around to Rock Med to get me though!
Grateful to have been any part of it. It was an amazing vibe, cherished memories. He taught so many the true meaning of beauty. Mind goes back to the last one at soldier field, the sixty or eighty thousand in attendance were in tune. Incredible. Can't tell my pillow from a stone. It was love, pure, simple, elegant. We need choose wisely our path but , the journey is the destination. Still missin him. Roll on forever!
I remember when I was in college my Mom asked me had I figured out what I wanted to do with my life, I said yes...follow the Grateful Dead. I feel so blessed to have been a part of the life, love ,music of the Grateful Dead
I had the privilege to be in attendance for this performance, and in my mind it transformed this tune from "new shit" into "where is it; please play it!"
Sumptuous, bittersweet, and tenderly inspirational.
Jerry and the boys got me thru Afghanistan! I had my ipod hooked up to speakers in my truck over there and had the local kids where we were patrolling listening to the Dead! Not that many Heads in the Army but we found each other! Lived on a beautiful mountain top smoking fresh hash that we bought off the Afghan National Police which is crazy buying hash from a cop! Jerry helped me keep my head over there and got me thru the Army b.s.!!!! Thank God I'm finally out!
@erpmarlo13 Great story. i would like to say though seing as the CIA is exporting the Heroin out of Afghanistan it's not a far stratch getting HASH from the local so called authorities. Tealls us a little bit about the total corruption that exists there. Not really uch different here. Heck the ATF just got popped for sending 30,000 guns to mexican cartels. And Holder lied and got caught. God Bless You that are blindly fighting a corporate war.
To this day I wear my Jerry Garcia button on one side of my jean jacket. On the other side is a button that says "The older I get the better I was". If people don't get it, I guess that's their problem.
@confederado i am fairly new to the Dead family but i feel more at home with these people than i ever have with anyone great scene and glad to have you Blessed Love to All
@keefriffhard212 Further or any concert may not be in my future. certainly my loss. meanwhile it is very good to know that younger people can still listen and feel what i and my friends felt for so many years. i love all the comments on this page. the audience was always part of the show. it never needed to be, but just made it all that much better.
A great performance that flies in the face of alot of the elitist "heads" that say nothing good came out of the later years performance-wise. RIP Jerry
Thank you so truly much for uploading this and many Dead songs, we've lost that one connection we all shared each and every Summer without any care in the world. We Miss You Lots Jerry.
maybe we could consider the ideology of the sixties as valid as we remember Jerry and then we can begin to heal ourselves this song, so very touching. I plan on seeing FURTHUR as much as possible to my agenda. Anyone else? Come on along.
I don't know why i must hear this.. heartbreaking song of late Jerry... Each time i come to see it, i cry. But you know.. i couldn't have loved Jerry more if he'd been my own dad, so wth.... i'll cry if i must, but stay away.... never!
me and my girlfriend fell in love to this song at shwagstock 43. there was a tribute on echo bluff. one of the best nights of my life and il never forget it. R.I.P jerry garcia. uve touched so many lives and still are even tho ur not here. deadhead for life

I Love Jerry and even though there is a few vocal flubs this is a nice version...very chill I still think 10/01/94 is the best version!!!

@helloohhi I think you will see and experience it, the spirit is still there and nothing will ever end that.

The sad thing is.....this song only has 568,443 hits. You look at much of the music today and see millions of viewers....just goes to show that todays youth needs to be educated in the ways of the Dead!! Peace to all!!
Sidewinder008 9 months ago 11
@Sidewinder008 Good taste is not always a mass appeal thing. Don't we know that! This is one of favorite 300 or so Dead songs...even If Jerry Messed up the words , twice!
evahargis 6 months ago
@Sidewinder008 The Dead was never everyone's cup of tea. Although the last thing on their mind was / is exclusivity, that is sort of the way it turned out. But the upside is one can find Dead aficionados almost everywhere. The day Jerry died (or the day after) I had to make a short business trip down I-75 but i needed gas somewhere near Findley Ohio and found a gas station with a van parked playing Dead music. Stayed about an hour. The crowd grew to about 50 -- at an obscure gas station!
verbenco 5 months ago

Wait. This song doesn't describe the money and babes the Dead rolled around in. Please people. You were played.
devtrash 10 months ago
@devtrash Dev, look at it this way; we showered them with money to do something we enjoyed, and something that they derived joy from doing. I consider that an even trade :D

@devtrash you are simply a moron that was left in a garbage can as a child if you cant see that jerrys words influenced and unlocked many minds and changed so many lives and helped redefine a entire era and community that was full of love and happyness then you sir are totally clueless .... played you say i say you were played for not being there and not sharing the love and freedom so many of us felt im sorry for your loss in this cornerstone of life
gr8oneohio 10 months ago
@gr8oneohio Ha! It's okay dude. Phil Lesh and the Gang are still taking in your money er I mean unlocking your minds!
devtrash 10 months ago

I had the privilege to be in attendance for this performance, and in my mind it transformed this tune from "new shit" into "where is it; please play it!"
