  • just made a batch, i live in mexico and it was a bitch to get borax and washing soda i actualy used 100 percent soda ash for pools i belive it the same stuff i hope soo, soo says my research and label reading, but i used a drill and a mixer padlle. lets see how it does tomorrow thanks

  • Your actual cost is less than 2.5 cents a load unless according to your receipt you added H Mill Rye Flour to your detergent! I think the actual cost is 2.22 cents a load. I appreciate your economy of talk, too. Very nice.

  • Is this fine to use in HE machines?

  • @mecrazy777 Yeah this recipe is ideal for HE machines because it makes low suds. people think the more suds you see is "cleaning" your clothes, but its the ingredients in the detergent that really cleans your clothes not the suds.

  • @143summer28 Thanks!! I've made it and am using it. My clothes seem to come out clean and smelling fine. Thanks so much!! Love to save money. Only problem is that now whenever I'm in the store and see how much they charge for Laundry Soap it makes me REALLY mad to think of how much money I've wasted over the years!! Thanks again!!

  • @mecrazy777 No problemo, good for you! =) Yeah the charge for laundry soap is crazy huh? Lol.. Happy washing!

  • I appreciate the humorous pop-up comments added to keep things interesting ;) "Soap chunks" sure can be a pain! LOL

  • wow just the borax in LA is like 4.99 and on sale! yours was less than 3 bucks what a rip off!

  • Cant you cut the soap, then run it through a blender. And maybe with 1/4 of the water you use as lukewarm, or that makes suds?

  • Good recipe however, 1 minute showing the amounts would be wonderful.....Had to listen carefull for amounts as you were showing how to do this.....

  • WTF some nekid kid walks... wierd...

  • Walmart is onto this, been checking now and then to see if they have these things that are neede to make this soap. Not until now, by the fabric softener, low and behold all three together borax, washing soda, and felsnaptha bar soap. I must say the felsnaptha bar soap is quite strong and perfumey. I think homemade bar soap would do best.

  • @kululu99 I use dove hypoallergenic bar soap and when it gets down to a sliver, I throw it in a bag to dry. I just used 7oz of that grated up to make me 5 gallans of laundry soap. I also put in a cup of standard washing liquid to keep it in a liquid state (antijelling in the store bought stuff). I also added 3 TBS of lavendar oil so it smells nice.. This is my third batch in over a year so it lasts a long time. I use 2liter soda bottles for storing it under the sink.

  • @junekentucky Good Idea!!

  • It's perfect for an HE washing machine.

  • has anyone tried this in an HE washing machine??

  • Yes safe for babies this only has two ingredients used in regular soap so your skipping all the dies and chemicals and washing soda is at lowes menards home depot for those that are looking

  • Is washing soda the same as Borax? Is this suitable for whites and coloreds? I do not want my colored clothes to fade. Also, is this safe for babies? I want to make this tomorrow.

  • Great stuff.... I want to add some scent to mine. Any sugestions?

Oh ya. I had to watch it twice..... I keps reading the silly captions..... the ones that had nothing to do with the vid were the time wasters. But thanks for the info.

  • @MrMrmick1961 You can buy Lavender oil on eBay and dilute it, or boil flowers and use the water :)

  • good video

  • R u in north ankeny, ia?

  • I made my first batch yesterday....totally love it! It took stains and grease out of white napkins, yay! So much better than those cheaper laundry detergents. Better for the environment too as there are no plastic bottles being wasted!

  • I have made 2 batches of this now. I have not been able to find washing soda in the stores so I make mine with baking soda. It works fine for me. I also use a whisk to break up gel clumps. I had saved an old liquid laundry detergent bottle which I fill up. I give it a couple shakes just before use and it pours out smoothly. I will never go back to buying laundry detergent as long as I can find the ingredients to make my own.

  • mmm 42 oz detergent in dollar tree is $1 each... I hope you save more ^_^

  • Cuz its soapy, and..... thats what happens!! :)

  • Love your video....I do not agree that it's monotone. I love the little quips that are included & I find your presentation to be engaging & informative. Give us more money saving videos please!

BTW....I've used your recipe & making my second batch today!

    Thanks!

  • Great video, but it's a little annoying that it's in monotone.

  • can someone tell me what does "GAIN" mean? @3:50

  • @joy000003 It's a brand of powder detergent.

  • can someone tell me what does "GAIN" mean? @3:54

  • We demonstrate this to our Food Pantry every two weeks, and supply instructions in English and Russian. This, along with a fabric softener shortcut, we figure a family of 4 can save $40 a month on laundry supplies!! It's one of the BEST SECRETS to share!!

  • I've made this recipe many times but had trouble explaining it to friends. Thanks! Love the comments throughout! I have a Saladmaster grater that makes quick work of the bar of soap. I put the goop into 5, 1 gallon milk jugs. Shake before pouring and the gelatinous mix blends better. Pouring into the washing machine soap dispenser usually is less messy than scooping from 5 gallon bucket.

  • I like the powdered version, simple - takes two minutes! 1:1:1 of borax, a bar of soap, washing soda!

  • Have made 3 batches, Works Great! I add put in a cup on all fabric powder bleach and use Nel Feltha soap. I melt all ingredients in the 4 cups then fill the 5 gallon bucket to the top. I don't add any water once I put it into individual bottles. Works great! Thanks for the video.

  • Have made 3 batches, Works Great! I put in a cup on all fabric powder bleach. Thanks for the video.

  • What's with all the annotations that have nothing to do with the video? I don't care about your children's art projects in the background. This isn't pop-up video.

  • I put the grated soap in a tall pot with cold water to start and heat slowly. A wire wisk mixes everything up well in the 5 gl. bucket. Yes let it cool so it can "process" or melt together. I put the soap in plastic jugs after it cools, easier to mix as it will separate. This stuff washes well. I recommend "Mean Green" to pretreat greasy stains and collars of shirts. Rinse every now and then with white vinegar. Have Fun!

  • Great video. Why do you have to let it sit for 24 hours before using it though?

  • @gulfside2000 It takes 24 hours for it to get to a gel consistency

  • I loved all the trivia blurbs you scattered throughout your video. Took something that was merely informative and made it something personal and fun! :D

  • Mine didn't turn jello like after 9 hours, can I still use it ?

  • Great video. I love these little tips.

  • Yay for hating glass flat tops!!! Oh yeah, great video.

  • Is that a Kohler K-10433-CP sink faucet?

  • very insterstating video...................

  • my family is low on money but there still not useing it :(

  • I have made a variation of these ingredients and it is very effective. Can one use this mixture with bleach?

  • @scotydo1 yes you can use bleach, clorox 2, or additional borax as a whitener.

  • Can you use this mixture with bleach?

  • Why do you need to add hot water to the 5 gallon bucket? Would cold water work just as well?

  • Man I love youtube! I would have NEVER thought of making my own LD. Thank you!

  • Has anyone used this mixture in an HE machine? Don't want to have a big bucket of stuff I can't use in my washer.

  • i tend to buy generic brand anything whenever possible, which is considerably cheaper than name brand. this video illustrates cost effectiveness over name brand. also, im sure this is more practical for larger families who do alot of laundry, not for single guys who do a load once a week.

  • I forgot to say, I put all the bar soap in at once in the pan. As you start heating the soap starts to disolve immediately , chunks are not that big of a deal. Thank you tsdvideos. This has saved us no kidding about 180.00 at least since december 2010. Our large family was useing gel about 30-40.00 a month. This detergent works as well, and I think better than the commercial we were useing.

  • Washing soda=sodium carbonate. Find this as a pool/spa supply. It costs 8-10 bucks for a 5 lb container. I use hth pH plus 98% pure sodium carbonate. Mark your bucket with a permanent line and you will not have to measure water each time. I dump all the ingredients in the warm bucket of water and stir. Bottle immediately into 4 1 gallon jugs. Make and jug 15 minutes total. Mix and jug in the bath tub, dont overcook your soap, stinks up the house. 2 liter bottle = awesome large funnel.

  • I like to use liquid bleach for bath towels and cloths. Can you still use it with the ingredients used.

  • i love making this! It really cleans my clothes and they smell so great! Have not had to buy laundry soap in a year.

  • Now, time to buy materials.

  • ARGH! I can't find washing soda ANYWHERE!!

  • @joesmoe71 ebay, but the shipping is stupid. I find mine at my local Meijer...you could try them online? good luck :)

  • @joesmoe71 Have you tried Walmart? It's in the laundry section. Mine was right next to the borax and the washing soda is Arm and Hammer brand. I've also read about it being available at hardware stores.

  • @Paulina89 Yeah but they didn't have it last time I looked, maybe they were just out that week

  • @joesmoe71 sodium carbonate=washing soda Joe. Look in spa, or pool supplys under the PH brand. Its 98% and works well.

  • Pure and Natural products are neither PURE or NATURAL. This is a waste of time. Much more economical to just buy a $10 bottle of Dr Bronners pure castile soap. It's concentrated, you just add water. You can also use it to wash your car, your dishes, your body, your TEETH and anything else. Plus it IS "pure", "natural" and ORGANIC.

  • You can use this method and add 1 scoop of oxy clean and use dr bronners peppermint or tea tree bar soap instead of having to add essential oil. You can get it cheap at trader joes. But instead of 4 cups of water use 1 gallon. Then fill the bucket up to the 4 gallon mark.

  • you dont have to grate the soap it just makes it melt faster but you can throw the whole bar of soap in the pan with the water and just cook in on med... heat and just stir it once in a while and it takes about 15 mins to melt.

  • Try soap nuts laundry detergent. No mixing anything. Just use berries that are grown on trees and dried out in the sun!

  • Pretty cool man! I just might make some one dAy

  • Screen comments made me chuckle! SOAP CHUNKS!

  • Can this be used in a front loader? They seem to have a special requirement for low suds.

  • i heard you add it after it cooled...

  • If you wanted to add fragrance or essential oil to make it smell nice, when should you add it???

  • Good job! Thanks.

  • Does this work better than XTRA detergent, mixed with SUN oxygen cleaner? or XTRA detergent mixed with oxyclean? Let me know if it smells good, also if it gets out tough stains? thanks.

  • Does this work better than XTRA detergent, mixed with SUN oxygen cleaner? or XTRA detergent mixed with oxyclean? Let me know if it smells good, also if it gets out tough stains? thanks

  • Use a great laundry detergent with the Breathing Mobile Washer for fast and easy clothes washing with amazing results

  • I tried this and the bucket of soap lasted me at least months.

  • Comment removed

  • Do I use a cup full of this per load in my top loading maching? or a cap full??

  • can I use my pot for cooking after I make the soap? I would think so because I'm using soap, but even if you make candles the pot is ruined.

  • Good idea I will try this

  • Your video was great! Funny and informative, I'm definitely going to be doing this very soon. Like tomorrow :) Loved the subtitles, and you were a better cinematographer than some I've seen! At least you didn't drop the camera in the bucket of soap ;) Thank you!

  • how long does this laundry soap last you? and how much does it cost for all your supplies?

  • One issue I have found and maybe you can help me with an idea of how to solve it. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and we have very hard water. I have noticed some white residue spots on my clothes. Any ideas of how to alleviate this problem?

  • Comment removed

  • I let mine sit for a few hours after making it. It geled up and then I took a whisk to it really good. Now it is very smooth and there are no clumps. Even after not using it for a few days the texture is still very smooth.

  • Better eat those bannans pretty quick theyre starting to spoil.

  • 312 loads??!! That's well over a year of detergent for me/us. And being that I can get the supplies at the dollar store, I can save a small fortune! Thanks.--This will also be handy if I can ever achieve my dream of selling the house and buying a yard to build my dream home on.

  • Hi trent, I knew that voice was familiar. Great website, I'm adding it to my rss reader.

  • help, I used the recipe and I got bad results. It seperated, like animal fat seperates from the juice when cooled. I got a 3 inch layer of hard white stuff and underneath a bucket of thin runny syrupy stuff! Can it be fixed?

  • @HELLCATZ2 If you have a big soup pot, and and another bucket ( to put the now warmed up stuff in), you might try rewarming everything to just as it starts to simmer, to hot touch but not boiling, when its all been rewarmed mix it, stirring constantly for about 5 minutes or so, then let it set for 24 hours. If seperates again the same way, the soap you chose may not be compatable. Good Luck, let me know if it worked. I know that homemade natural soap works everytime =)

  • You overestimated the cost per load because you added in the cost of that rye flour you bought. :)

  • what happens if you dont put the borax

  • can you use this in an HE washer?

  • uuh hihi i uploaded a new pic any guys want to chat and maybe more

  • This looks amazing! I look forward to trying it out.

  • I LIKE IT

  • Great video!

But I was wondering, does it matter what type of soap you use? All of the recipes I've seen always use similar brands.

  • @CeciliaXGale Fels Naptha is actually laundry detergent-y, not body soapy, so I recommend that.

  • @wendys120 Ah, thank you! :)

I was going to be experimental and try to use body soap haha!

  • To cut your time down on your 'grating' of the soap-I use my SALAD SHOOTER. :) Super awesome! And Super FAST!!!!

  • Looks like a scam... For me the best way to make money is by using the system explained for free here: ez-casino(dot)com, it's the easiest way, I'm making around $60 a day with it...

  • @vivienPadillapeyn LOL your a fuckning noob. this isn't about money.

  • @youbad1231234 and vivien is nothing more than a spam bot

  • This turned out excellent for me, and gelled great! I did use boiling water and just let it cool some before adding the borax and soda.

I found when washing the clothes it was a gentle detergent and I needed to use Javex with the more soiled jeans but it worked great.

Thanks for the upload - you saved me quiet a bit of cash.

  • @gentletruth Wow- I just pulled a load of washed rags out of the dryer and I had some face clothes in my rag bag because they were too soiled to use for face clothes, this recipe actually restored the face clothes, I was totally sold! I'll never go back to boughten soap again. This is so much cheaper and it works so much better.

    I can't recommend this enough.

  • challenge: " I concocted some hombrew laundry detergent that really made me blow soapchunks"

  • is that real fruit next to the burner

  • where did you buy the super washing soda? cant find it at walmart or BJ's. all i find in the laundry isle is the baking soda, no washing soda. great video

  • @operationfate if you take baking soda and bake it in the oven for 30mins on 300 it turns in to washing soda....my sister did it for school and then we tried it our homemade laundry soap and it works the same

  • @PianoBabay

oh...ok...thanks a lot pianobabay. im sure gonna try it.

  • @operationfate your welcome...also you can use oxyclean. oxyclean has the same stuff that is in washing soda...we have made our laundry soap 3(using washing soda, using oxyclean and using the baked baking soda)ways and every time it turn out the same.

  • @PianoBabay

    wow...i didn't know i could use oxyclean. thanks a lot :)

  • In responce to PianoBabay in making baking soda into washing soda; you will want to keep your washing soda that you made from baking soda in an air tight container to prevent moisture from the air out. Baking soda turns into washing soda after it is heated because all the moisture in baking soda will evaporate. Trying to find washing soda in the store is a bugger, but baking soda is widely available

  • @PianoBabay THANK YOU for this.. I have been looking for washing soda in Israel and no one knows what I'm talking about =)

  • @Ineedmorelives Sodium carbonate=washing soda look for is as a pool or spa supply in grocery or hardware stores. You want the highest purity.

  • You could use Dr. Bronner's instead of bar soap. A little more money but way less time, use of the stove, stirring, etc.

  • Look at all the amps used for using the stove. You put it on your credit card. It takes a lot of time, and I can see the failed results... Better off just buying laundry detergent at the store. I am not convinced though a lot of people might find this useful...

  • this is cool and a good way to save money thanks for the tip

    the cheap guy

  • I make a version of this too. I actually add Avon Bubble Bath to mine to give is extra suds and an awesome smell. I'll do a video soon...my recipe is very similar..

  • You can use a strainer to get the soap chunks. :)

  • can it be used as liquid soap for hands? or will it irritate skin?

  • Hey where did you get the washing soda...I've looked everywhere...walmart, walgreens, cvs...and I cant find it..can I use regular backing soda?

  • @EeshieKing Don't use regular soda. I used craigslist to put out a "plea" as I couldn't find it either..I had 6 responses, and it saved me hours of looking into different stores!

  • @spokanetrish Thanks for the advice...actually my Fiance found some at one of the only stores I didn't look for it at...go figure...haha :)

  • @EeshieKing You'll have better luck finding washing soda at your local hardware store. I found mine at Ace Hardware and they said they keep it stocked all the time as there is always demand for it.

  • This is a great video. Thanks so much I appreciate it.

  • This is a great vid and I can´t thank enough all those wonderful people that share with us their expertize. Now, I need to tell you that there is some WONDERFUL soap bar, used in México for the longest time, specially for baby clothes or delicate whites. I have seen lately that is now available in many US shops. Look for "ZOTE". It´s cheap and works great for this recipe. I have use it for over a year and I am sooo happy with the results!! If you can´t find near you, go to Mexican supermarket

  • @Sol57 I was just in Super Walmart the other day and I found a bar or two tucked away on a top shelf near the very end of the row where they keep the bags- yes, bags- of powdered laundry detergent. The Zote smelled great and I just might try it once I run out of Ivory:^)

  • Cool video

  • I make a powdered version. Same ingredients - washing soda, borax, and grated soap in a 1:1:1 ratio. Mix it up, and use directly in your washer. (It's 1 - 2 tablespoons in my washer!)

  • this was a cool vid i was wondering how to make your own laundry detergent

  • Hello Trent, Great Video and great Detergent. For front Loader's and or "HE" washers use this same recipe except use 50/50 mix detergent & Water in a container Mix or shake before using only a 1/4 cup per load works great! for these machines,

  • can I use this with HE machines?

  • @gellegbs I'd guess not since there would be more residue leftover, for sure. Maybe someone has a bar soap for this purpose somwhere...

  • I can not found arm and hammer super wash soda any where. Where could I found it? walmart does not sale it.

  • @mystrohits regular grocery stores sell it, I did not find it at walmart either.

  • instead of grating soap can you just use liquid dish soap?

  • Fels Naptha soap has harmful perfumes in it. If you've got sensitive skin, or are just plain tired of grating soap, we sell soap flakes made from virgin coconut oil - with no harsh or toxic ingredients. Just google "Healthy Planet Soap Flakes" :)

    Nory

  • @HealthyPlanetCT fels naptha may have perfumes in it but it is the best choice. I had motor oil stains on my jeans and had washed and dried them several times, they would not come out. so I wet the stains and rubbed the fels naptha bar into them with water about 3 times then washed as normal. every oil stain came out, fantastic stuff.

  • @me373

Just understand what the phthalates in perfumes are doing to us, and then make a decision on whether to use fels!

In one study, Harvard and CDC scientists show men with higher phthalate levels are more likely to have low sperm count and impaired sperm quality. ...

    [w-w-w] [dot] environmentcalifornia [dot] [org]

  • @HealthyPlanetCT Hi, I am not arguing that it might have things that are bad for you, I agree with you on that. most things that are not natural are bad for you in one way or another. take care :)

  • Hi there! It's great to see this recipe! Thank you. One question..how much do you put in a load of wash? One cup on average?

  • I can see tha you made a big batch, what is the "shelf life"of this product?? How long can you keep three gallons of water in your laundry room before it 'expire" ?

I would love to try, but I don't like to waste anything!!!

  • DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A High Efficiency "HE" WASHER!!!!!!

  • i just wanna know if this is good for handwashing clothes.

  • i would like to try this stuff, i hope it will save up a lot of money in my pocket just like 08000mumdad did for me.

  • This looks like a really interesting way to save money...I was just wondering if you knew how eco-friendly it was? I

  • If you're tired of grating your own soap flakes, make your life easier. This company has awesome soap flakes. Check it out here:

    healthy-planet-fundraising-dot-com/soap-drawing-dot-html

  • Wait on the reciept, you have rye flour too. How much of that do I use?

  • @cookitnow1 none, he probably bought rye flour for something else.

  • I'm not sure if anyone has asked you this but is this detergent HE friendly? I really want to try it but I'm worried that it will cause too many suds in my machine. Thanks!

  • annotation @1:29 thats cuz iowa has nothing better to do lol

  • How much do you measure in a front-loader. Would it be half a cup of this? I assume it's best to put it right in with the clothes instead of the dispenser.

  • Hello tsdvideos

I have to admit I am very impressed with the quality of your videos here on youtube.

They are certainly a pleasure to watch as I do enjoy them.

I am sure there is many others who also feel the same about your videos.

    Mark McCulloch

  • does it fade color clothes

  • nope!

  • great video!

does this work well with cold water, or do you use hot?

  • better to dissolve in hot waterbthen wash and rinse warm or cold water

  • Pretty cool! Never thought about making my own detergent, but hey, why not!
