  • absolute groundbreaking masterpiece in its ability to seamlessly blend abstraction without it being in an outright dream

  • Music and dreams. Great analogies for "understanding" Lynch's work. I'd also thrown in food. "I just had a great steak dinner...what does it mean?"

  • Great to listen to this. Lynch's masterpiece is one of my favorite movies.

  • @thelatestttplague best explanation I got was that Lynch was making a TV series that got canned so he used all the rushes he had and turned it into a film. The spine of the story is the horrific dreamscape that the Naomi Watt's character passes through in the split seconds before she ends her life. Hands down the most intense movie I've ever seen.

  • I love how he answers these questions.. he's amazing.

  • why do we have to put words on everything?

  • @Heron001ful Spoken like the God Emperor himself.

  • @SquirrelRangler Hiding for the wolf?

  • This is hilarious.

  • sounds very abstract

  • Quit ragging on the interviewer. He's Japanese and English obviously isn't his first language. You try interviewing someone from a different country in their native tongue! As you can see, his questions still provoked thoughtful and interesting answers.

  • In a huge ocean of talentless / devicive media shit . It is a blessing (don't panic !) to have INDIVIDUALS who are willing to share their art . Great guy .

  • "What are the highlights of this movie?" "The movie is itself a highlight. Now get the fuck outta my house." David is so patient, and generous with his answers!

  • well. as he says, he doesn't feel like analyzing this movie. and that's how it is. there is no need to explain a movie 'cause the words are much weaker than the pictures shown. you need to understand that the feelings it gives you are the whole interpretation of the film. that's how he explains and i think that's logical.

  • the interviewer sucks

  • come on now...that's not art...i mean it is,but it's not fair to the viewer to be left with so many questions.i believe mr lynch seems very arrogant in this interview.after all it's not something that a smart viewer could understand.in order to understand the movie you have to think exactly like lynch did and that's impossible of course.every person thinks differently and that would be ok if different conclusions could be made by diferent persons but thing is you cannot get to any of them...

  • @amagginas i don't agree. he's not arrogant, he's just answering the interviewer's question in an understandable way

  • @mdoudin that's not understable...maybe i'm wrong and it is not arrogant either...but hell,give us a tiny clue...

  • @amagginas That's the problem. People need to "understand" things so badly. When we don't understand things we get frustrated. For some reason we have the inherent desire to explain EVERYTHING. The fact of the matter is, some things can't be explained in human words. To ask someone to explain Mulholland Drive in a very specific way, using "real world" logic is absurd. It's like trying to tell someone what your dreams mean. Just appreciate the art and stop looking for something you won't find.

  • @thelatestttplague no,there's no need to understand EVERYTHING but there's a need to understand SOMETHING...we need a clue in order to draw our conclusions after seeing the movie twice or 3 times max...because lynch may be an excellent director and his pictures may be very powerful but i think that a movie's story is also very important and no one can deny that...if all i want is beautiful images and intense feelings there are many short films or painting exhibitions...

  • Jesus! The things you have to do to make Art! Lynch is so generous with these stupid questions.

  • @vudu8ball No questions is really stupid, even IF you are an artist, it still okay to ask question. The interviewer probably did know the answer anyway and just want to ask the question as well to give the people the information they want. I could call out an insult that use the words pretentious art snob but I won't since I am nice and not a troll(also hypocritical because I can be pretentious at times as well). Art is also about empathy towards everyone not inferiority complex.
