Actually Russia isn't a superpower. Its only a mildly influential regional power. The dont posse a direct threat the US manly because they dont have the Financial backing to launch an offensive campaign against the united states. I will agree that they do pose a nuclear threat but a large portion of Russias nuclear weapons are non-operational due to piss poor up keep. Russia is only a shell of what the USSR used to be.

Today still their mentality is completely different and we just have to try to talk. The second point is that Russia is the country where real freedom has never existed, because today the society (supporting current authority 70-80%) allows to limit the freedom of the others. Things like bananas, sausages and other exotic fruits and not common things were something many ordinary Polish people wished for at the time, where in the USA it was a standard.

I'm sure this credit crunch and financial crisis will boil over. It just takes time. And I don't think a silly stimulus package is gonna speed up economic growth much faster than natural. Either way, the economy will take a while to come back up. If FDR's public works projects even did much to stimulate economic growth faster than normal, it couldn't have been much faster since the Depression lasted pretty damn long.

It was a nightmare when the crisis (a correction) came to Poland. Queues everywhere. Clandestine market could not serve all. It was a hard time for simple people. Only shufflers did good or those who had direct and first access to goods - they could trade bartering. Money could not buy a lot but western money.

Well, I really don't think 2nd Depression is gonna happen anytime soon. Economic forecasts would be much worse more rapidly if a depression were to suddenly occur. We may be in the midst of a recession, but that's natural and part of the business cycle. Plus, we had several years of strong growth even after the first Bush recession after 9/11.

The Great Depression had at least 25% unemployment, and I think I've heard that it peaked at one point to 1/3rd of the workforce.

Unemployment (as it was measured in 1930s) is now running around 15% (shadowstats). We have a FIRE economy (Financial, Insurance, Real Estate) all of which have required bailouts. 70%+ of our economy is based on consumer spending (not production) and consumers are cutting back. Household debt is sky high, savings at an all time low. Treasury selling 10 times the bonds it did last year in Nov. to cover deficit. Dollar in danger of collapsing to half its value. Housing defaults peak in 2009.

For those who aren't 70 years old around here, enlighten us as to how it was measured differently from now. Isn't the current Labor Dept. way of collecting it the most accurate possible? If I remember right, don't they request and acquire data on layoffs and fired workers from each company? How can some private investigator or economist find 8+% MORE unemployment?? The government "refines" their economic data in an effort to be more "accurate." This has happened incrementally over several administrations. You will have to Google it because it is too complex to cover here. Both unemployment and CPI (and consequently GDP) have been tampered with extensively. Mismanagement can lead to politicians losing office, so stats are tweaked not to show the effects of bad policy decisions. But, please don't take my word for it, research it for yourself.

@whoo689 Stop drinking the KoolAid. The books are COOKED. Clinton CHANGED the Unemployment cal;culation in the 1990's to only include people RECEIVING unemployment checks. Today's report, with a big jump in new jobless and AT THE SAME time a drop in the official "Unemployment" rate to 9.7%, just means that more unemployed STOPPED RECEIVING checks than jopined the ranks. And Obama is just believing his own propaganda when he declares it's getting better.

Real unemployment at about 20% (that's the _underemployment_ number from the gov't if you want to compare Great Depression), and the real estate bubble hasn't finished bursting. What WAS a natural business cycle isn't allowed to happen, because Obama and Geithner are trying to shore up the markets, and they're only making it worse.
