IT WAS WRITTEN was underrated even when it came out. Many critics doubted Nas' sophomore effort because it lacked the selfless and visceral street intentions of ILLMATIC. However, IWW is far superior lyrically and beat-wise.

And although the concept was geared towards NY gangsta, Nas never over-played his role and mostly spoke about the harshness of street life.

It Was Written was progression/improvement, but NOT better if that makes any sense to y'all like it does to me. Ready To Die brought the East back so there's no comparison.
