We were numerically inferior in many of these battles, and our army did not have that many soldiers, but we still won, didn't we? That's actually true for many of out wars. Our army, at any time during our stint as a superpower, was small. That didn't stop us from defeating our numerically superior enemies. :) Sweden was awesome!

So the theory is this: A danish man went to Sweden to seek some sort of asylum or something, got rejected and returned to Denmark. That same person then asked for help out of Russia and went there, met someone and had an offspring which led to a succession of the throne in Russia. Thereby they had difficulties and won the war against Sweden? So if the Swedes would just have let that danish man remain, they could have taken the world? Dang.

@phixter How do you figure they fought with such a small portion of their army? Even by their census their active army was 390,000. The ottomans did two things for the swedes. 1; They fought a major battle (but only 1). 2; They sent supplies whenever they could. Sweden was not alone in this war. For they had the poles near the beginning. Also DenNor-Sweden only fought in one major battle against each other which Sweden won. Denmark was focusing on Hol-Gott.

@DanMarik Sweden lost the war because of Poltava, Before that Sweden won almost every battle that took place, Denmark were defeated,Poland were defeated and only Russia remained. But the Russians lured the Swedish army deeper and deeper within russia and launched the Sorched earth tactic towards them (Burning their own villages and remove all food) The Swedes had no protection against the cold weather (And this defeated Napoleon and Hitler aswell later on).Out of 40.000 Men only 22.000 survived.

@DanMarik Denmark lost immideatly at the begining of the Great Northern War, And in 1710 they tried to invade Sweden but got heavily defeated at Helsingborg. Later on the Swedish general renskiöld with a small Swedish army burned through entire Slesvig (Southern Denmark back then, Now a part of Germany).
The Swedish opponents over the war had way more troops to put out than the Swedes. And to make things worse, The English navy blockades the Swedish reinforcement lines.

@DanMarik Poland was conquered in 1707 and the Polish king August the Strong were kicked out from the Polish throne, The new king the Swedes put on the throne was weak and soon overthrown after the defeat at Poltava, He never gave the Swedes any help at all.

Sweden defeated Den-Nor in the beginning after getting by the blockade to the Jutland peninsula but after Den-Nor re-entered they were fighting Hol-Got (One of the allies of Sweden) for the Duchy of Schleswig. Yes I know Russia outnumbered them 2-1 in the battle of Polatava but that was the beauty of the battle. Russia tricked Sweden into attacking so deep that they would be demolished.

@DanMarik Sweden defeated the Danes at gadebusch aswell, A Swedish army defeated a bigger Saxon/Danish army. "Battle of Gadebusch, 1712" Russia outnumbered the Swedes in almost every battle, Hell.. In almost every battle during the Great Northern war Sweden were outnumbered during the battles.

@DanMarik Russia did not trick Sweden into attacking far inside Russia, Charlse XII was tired of the war and thought he could end it all in one swift go since he'd already beat both den-nor and Russia back so he decided to try for the goal and try take Moscow ending the war with Russia.
Because of ALLOT of bad timing and stupid mistakes the army was severely weakened when reaching Poltava "there were supposed to be 12k more men reinforcing them with Lewenhaupt and fresh supplies"
