To be consistently "green," wind turbine advocates should realize that far more landscapes are under threat from that technology vs. hydroelectric dams now.
A 2009 study cited the need for 3.8 million LARGE wind turbines as part of a big plan to replace fossil fuels. There are only about 1% of that number now, and look at all the aesthetic losses.
I don't want more dams (how about more birth control and fewer people?) but at least dams create natural-looking features, unlike wind skyscrapers.
The hypocrisy of "liberal" San Franciscans on this issue is amazing. Come on San Francisco, stop the destruction of Hetch Hetchy now! Give up the dam and restore the valley...now!
Thank you ancestors, for destroying hetch hetchy valley, now because of your ingnorance and disregard we will probably never get to see this beautiful valley during our life time, and our children and there children will probably miss out on it to!
These temple destroyers, devotees of ravaging commercialism, seem to have a perfect contempt for Nature, and, instead of lifting their eyes to the God of the mountains, lift them to the Almighty Dollar.
Dam Hetch Hetchy! As well dam for water-tanks the people’s cathedrals and churches, for no holier temple has ever been consecrated by the heart of man.
Here is another stark truth: California has a very long coastline; it faces the sea. If water could be taken from the sea, if the plants to remove the water ran on solar, Hetch Hetchy's dam could be made obsolete. The salt removed from the sea water could be sold at a profit to states that need it for winter snow melting or even other nations in bulk.
@cr500pilot Actually, the "bathtub ring" from the fluctuating reservoir level is a real eyesore on what is really a fantastic place. The dam and reservoir need to go...now. Come on San Francisco..
Hetch Hetchy holds less than 1% of all stored water in CA.
The SF Public Utilities stores less than 20% of the water it manages in Hetch Hetchy. The other 80% is stored in 8 other reservoirs.
Raising Don Pedro Reservoir, located on the Tuolumne River near Sonora, could store all the water from Hetch Hetchy if it were raised less than 30 feet. This would inundate about a mile of the Tuolumne Wild and Scenic River, but restore more than 8 miles of the river in Hetch Hetchy Valley.
The water supply must be replaced of course, but if you read the reports (UC Davis, USBR, EDF, RHH), you'll see it is not that much - much less than is at stake in other conflicts in the west.
@riversandrocks, how about trying to finally stabilize California's population, and the world at large, so more water isn't needed all the time? That should be the top priority of anyone wearing an environmental badge, but I see all sorts of PC excuses to not seriously promote birth control. And the whole economy is based on consumption growth, which means more people one way or another.
The central valley farmers use 80% of California's water supply. 80% of that water is lost to evaporation by watering crops with sprinklers. If crops were nourished from underground pipes and drip irrigation farming consumption would drop DRAMATICALLY, California would easily be able to sustain several times its current population.
if you restore it, its just going to cause people to want to damn the Clavey and drain Elenore and lake Cherry every year,,,, many stupid city folks don't understand that, lets restore one water shed and damn another, terrible idea... San Francisco has the lease on it so that think they can take it for their selves, well i don't think so.... they should not be able to have it in the first place, build a distillation facility if you want water...
i thought we needed it for a water supply? Especially with all of this talk of "water shortages" all of the time! then again, we know how the media plays its game...always trying to instill fear within evey US citizen. want examples? -Anthrax killed less than 5 people, but we all were washing our hands and wearing masks when getting mail -Water shortages -Food shortages -Economy in a downward spiral -Bird Flu -Housing market -Y2K -SARS -Hanta Virus
It is sad to see one of my Paiute areas under water. We Paiutes onced owned the area and gathered acorns and other food items there for eons. To see it under water is very sad.
@Ahwahneechee Excellent point! It would be great if many (if not all) of the tribes would get behind the idea to restore the valley. San Francisco needs to be reminded of its continued destruction of Hetch Hetchy.
Restore the Valley. Restore Yosemite. I have seen the water supply numbers and am convinced it can be done. Thanks to all who are committed to this effort.

Ford is a Hypocrite.
He is an avid fan and participant of motor sports, yet supports organizations devoted to stopping them.
The guy is a tool.
Hetch Hetchy is a tiny reservoir.
It supports a lot of commerce.

It IS tiny...and it has destroyed such an amazing valley. So little gain for such a huge loss. Why not restore it.
You're the tool, tpcrb.
