  • Actually @olstar18, many times otomycosis is caused because of using q-tips. People with otomycosis are in no way unclean, in fact it can be caused by trying to clean the inner ear and in turn causing injury

  • it looks like someone took a dump on that guys face.

  • I got this about 20 years ago after water skiing in a lake. It hurt like hell to have it treated. I thought the doctor should have knocked me out first, but no, I was wide awake. Beware of swimming/skiing in freshwater lakes. I wear ear plugs now when I do.

  • i think its moving.. oh!.. oh!.. ITS ALIVE!

  • lol does anyone else see that ghost? on the left side XD that white part totally looks like a ghost!

  • the fungus reminds me of bean sprouts.why does the powder get so hard?is it a bad thing to soften it with a little oil,or does oil affect it?why does the removal have to be so painful for the patient?is there no other way?

  • Yes it is, and it is very itchy and painful.

  • toad stools what is that ?

  • Toad stools are just another kind of mushroom/fungus.

  • How can one really cure this condition totally because I keep getting it sucked out but it always returns, any suggestion/s R welcome.

    :(

  • that is horrible....

  • Yep it sure is, get this and you cannot swim again, nor wear anything in your ear canal so I've been told.

    Not fun.

  • if you look to your left you can see a smiley if you stop it at 58 seconds

  • I see :D

  • This is a very serious infection that hurts like hell. To have and to treat

And apparently it looks really nasty too

    Who woulda guessed XD

  • You aren't kidding. I had this, once. It really sucked.

  • I quite agree. I am going through it right now. And the vicodin isn't even helping anymore.

    Quesion though.

How do you get this. Like any other normal infection?

  • So sorry to hear that! (no pun intended)

My doctor told me it's just something that happens. A spore somehow gets in to your ear and thrives. Mine was a combination of bacteria and fungus. The antibiotic drops fueled the fungus and so on. It was like my own little ecosystem! :P

  • Ha. Oh wow.

More than what they told me. Course I was crying so I wasn't really "hearing" much. Oh but when I go back I will have questions galore.

So how were you healed if the drops just made it worse? And how long did it take you to heal. I am on day three

  • My doctor prescribed a dry powder consisting of an antibiotic and an antifungal. The ear drops made the fungus worse because it kept my ear moist. See if you can get your doctor to prescribe something like I had. It is VERY important you keep your ear dry, especially when you are using a dry powder medication. That powder can become concrete-like and hurts to be removed.

  • That sounds like absolute torture!

I thought doctors were supposed to heal

  • Did you finally get rid of it completely? If so how?

  • Stay away from things like q tips, never scratch your ears inside and NEVER go to an ear Dr that cleans out excess ear wax with a WATER gun in his office if your ears cannot drain properly.

  • go at it with some tweezers!

  • so...how is it cured?

    removal through surgery?

  • It can be cured.

1.Remove the fungal debris carefully with out traumatising the ear canal.

2.Treat any causes like ear discharge, diabetis.

    3.Stop using antibiotic ear drops.

4.Keep the ear dry, avoid head bath till the infection subsides.

  • How dry though? Shower with ear-plugs dry?

  • My ENT specialist prescribed a dry powder consisting of an antifungal and antibiotic. Had to puff that in my ear and avoid getting water in that ear. Cleared it up nicely. What sucked was when he had to go in and remove the crusted on medication.. It was like concrete!

  • antifungal powder is the best thing to dry the ear. Crust removal is done manually.

  • The crust removal hurt :(

  • I sympathise, Ask your doctor to do it gently. THorough removal is the only way to eradicate otomycosis

  • Mine was almost 2 years ago. He removed the initial infection, then prescribed to medicine. Later, he had to go back in and re-clean my ear after the infection was gone. Hasn't come back!

  • ahem.. "prescribed THE medicine"

I'm too tired to type. :P

  • Happy 2 learn this, hope it never will again.

    Stay well. :)

  • Read your comments what about PPL with very dry ears that cannot drain well with damaged skin due to a really bad ear infection? Do you still recommend this powder?

  • Yep sure does.

  • What was the name of this powder? Boy do I need it.

Were you ever able to swim again or do you avoid ANY kind of water near your ears pernamently?

Any replies will be most appreciated.

Hope you R 100% cured of it by now. :)

  • it's removed with a micro aspirator

  • it's removed with micro aspirator and after you are cured with antibiotic to kill aspergillus

  • oh god....this is seriously inhumane...eehhhh, u can c the fruiting bodies...OMG!

  • Oh god, you can see the fruiting bodies on it...
