In the beginning, MTV was a special order cable channel. MTV started putting out adverts that said tell your cable company "I want my MTV!" This may have been the first VMAs cause I remember Eddie Murphy being the first or second host.

I remember seeing this when it first aired. I was 11 yrs old and didn't speak a word of English, but I was already a Rap fan eventhough I didn't understand what they said at the time.
Thanks for this. After watching Chelsea Handler at last night's VMAs I have to say that this show, with the possible exception of Chris Rock, still hasn't had a funnier host than Eddie Murphy.
