That Tail Light shouldn't be there. Very nearly made the same mistake thanks to this vid. Luckily I have a complete history of the B-29 and checked it out first. Still, Great result. Ive built mine as a "Flyer" and have utilised the wheel wells as compartments for a couple of 9 volt batteries. Unfortunately, even with led's, for some reason the lights would not function as required so I emitted them. It bugs but It was a stumbling block I couldn't overcome. "Experts", eh? who needs 'em. LOL!!!
Beautiful model! I once enlarged this kit 2-1/4 times to nearly 80" It had 4 K&B .19s, fowler flaps, retractable landing gear and tail skid and landing lights that lowered and lit up. It was for controline. I never had the nerve to fly it. It didn't look nearly as good as yours though. Bill
my uncled made 2 of these and gave me one to hang up in my room, but i was 5 or 6 at the time. i wish he waited about 6 or 7 more years cause i regretfully demolished it.
my uncle had made two of these and he gave me one to hang up in my room, i was like 5 or 6 at the time. i wish he waited 6 or 7 years more cause i regretfully demolished it.
Can you please tell me how you did that? I have the same model and would like to do the same thing with the propellers. I have the motors already but how did you do the wiring?
@modelairplanenut - I did the same thing on my B-29 when I built it aropund 10 years ago - I get all my engines, wring and switches along with battey boxes (Mounted in the bomb bays, on mine) at radio shack. I also lit the interior with small white-ish / yellow-ish lights I got from Radio shack.
Yes, I hit my head against the wall several times. I have to find the time to remove the decals and apply new ones. For the aluminum finish I used a combination of chrome paint and foil. I agree it wasn't an easy kit to build, mainly because it was so big, not as easy to handle as a small kit. It is also heavy. But it looks impressive when finished.
build a fantastic model like this and make the mistake of putting the star upside down. lol great job though. i've built this kit and let me tell you...it wasn't easy.
how'd you achieve the polished aluminum paint job? did you put foil on the model at all?
Yes, there is a wire, but that is the radio wire standard on all B-29 airplanes... and you are right, sometimes I have extra wires made by spiders. I need to find a nice big glass case to enclose it.
I still need to remove the star insignias from the back and re-install new ones in the right position.
i have a qestion... if you put batterys inside the plane and when u activate the switch on the plane, do you have to keep it there or can u leave it on without touching it?
@away2kill The batteries and switches are inside a controlled boxed wired to the airplane. There is a ribbon cable that goes from the controlled box to the airplane.
Holy flaming monkey poo... Four electric motors, a working tail strobe, and a flawless Bare Metal Foil finish... I'm impressed. How did you feed the wires to the engines? Through the base, through a drilled out wheel and strut, through the wings, and behind the cowls? I must know or I won't fall asleep till 4 A.M.
Very nice work. I'm sure a lot of "serious" modelers would scoff at spinning props, but I like it! It's nice to see. But... umm... is there any way you could have those props crank and whine before they catch?
It is the master modelers that get into animating models. Serious modelers are the ones that build the model FX for movies, these aren't trivial skills. Getting props to spin isn't easy as you have to get them to not wobble, and then syncing authentic sounds isn't easy either.
As a professional modeller who does occasionally work for the movies, I'd say that for the most part they are only as detailed as they need to be to "play" well on screen. Most detail action is done with computers these days! All the very best models I've seen have been built by hobbyists.
Awesome job!! I bought this kit in 77 or 78 when I was 8 or 9. Won a model contest with it at our local Mall. Loved it!! I made mine into a diorama that covered my whole bed. My Mom freaked!!! LMAO!!
Hi Pik93, I used miniature electric motors I got at Radio Shack. You can get them on-line. On this model there was enough space to fit 4 of the hobby motor with Catalog #: 273-223
For the lights I used LEDs, which I also got from Radio Shack. I powered the electronics with a 6VDC power adaptor. Have fun and good luck!
Really nicely done, Im working on a B-17F Flying fortress and I have the same concept in mind of using electronics in it.

I wish one of these model companies would make a mass-produced 1/48 scale B-36 or B-52 kit! That would be a monster kit! LOL

That's a pretty neat job! But I'd like to see the props start slowly, with a little of that "shwee-shwee-shwee" of the starters. 8-)

Where did you source the sound for the engines?
I've heard B-29's and B-17's at air shows, those radials sound like motorcycles too me.

B-29 were the air monster to japs during 1945.
When Jap soliders saw them they cried, "ten log, ten log, man died, man died, man died."
Of course they walked to their tombs because they sarted the war first !

Hey, the American insignia is up-side-down (left side of fuselage).

At 1:12 you can see close to the tail of the plane. The marking of the aircraft is upside-down. HAHAHAHAHA. How the hell did you do that LOL

of course, I should add, that I believe B-29 engines don't start immediately like that either, but "turn over" then engage.
