  • Be gentle with those connectors as they have a tendency to short out right where the connection is. BTW have you done many background CPM checks in your neighbourhood>..if so please reply and tell me what your readings were.

    thanks!

  • where u get that?

  • Hello.. thank you for nice video. I have got ludlum 2241-3.

Have got 3 probe, pancake (44-9), NaI scintillation (44-2) and 133-7 (high range gamma GM).

But i have a problems with 133-7 probe. I am not sure if it ismeasuring correctly or not. Because it measures sometimes like 1 mR/hr and than it doesn't measure for any undetermined time. Do you have any idea usage/use area of 133-7 probe?

  • @a12345nful on the 2241-3 you gotta put in the correct cal constant and deadtime and the correct voltage that it operates at for it to work right..discrimination may need to be set too..standard operating voltage on a 133-7 is 460 volts

  • Nice video and nice counters. That looks like a probe from a military geiger counter. It probably has 700 volt geiger tube in it. I have one of the tubes that went in those, ( it's a 700v. ) I going to try and build a simple volt meter just for testing geiger counters, with a panel meter and a string of 10 meg.Ohm resistors. I'll let ya all know if it works good . keep them Ludlums clickin'

  • I look forward to seeing that! thanks for the comments, i have 2 other ludlums but i have had a lot of problems with uploading videos lately so i hope to have those videos of soon.

  • Thanks and moe vids would be cool. I'm not setup to post vids right now, but In the future I'll try and post some neat stuff.

  • jrbpyro I sent a message to your inbox. please let me know if you got it, then return a message to my inbox. I'm just

setting up my You Tube page.

  • Testing voltage on a Ludlum (continued ) Your average small digital or analog voltmeter that so many of us have won't work for a geiger counter volt tester. They don't have a high enough sensitivity (impedance) , and will drain down on the counter's H.V. supply and it will read way too low. So you need a meter with a high impedence like an old Triplett 630 or a Simson that has a scale that goes up to 5000 or 6000 volt D. C. they won't "load down" the geiger , and will read true voltage.

  • well i have a voltmeter from radio-shack that works well for finding the voltage. All of the ludlum scaler and ratemeters have a lcd on them that allow you to read the voltage and set it to what you want

  • Hi I was lucky enough to have a good friend who sold me a Ludlum model 2 and a model 16. One problem with these counters is how to know what voltage the counter is set to ( if you want to change to a scintillation probe or a geiger tube that needs a different voltage. all the Ludlums have a H.V. adjust screw. ( continued on next post )

  • Well the easiest way to find the voltage is to just get a multimeter and put the contacts on the HV connector on the ludlum and you can adjust the voltage from there

  • @jrbpyro101 yeah but you need to go thru a hv divider box so you will not damage your multimeter and get an accurate reading ..they run about 150 bux

  • Great counter! Thanks for showing the features. Now I'm going to be wishing for one myself :-)

    And a pancake probe too!

    Maybe some day.....

  • Schweet unit, great deal on that too! I paid $400 for my Gamma Scout, which is far inferior to your unit there. I've never heard anything bad about Ludlums and hope to own one myself someday.

  • haha ya i just got another with a scintillator and pancake probe. You can usually find pretty good deals on ebay for a ludlum and probe, there are actually a few going on right now

  • Those are excellent units. Keep on the look-out for a rem ball so you can detect neutron radiation as well.

  • ya, i have been looking for one of those because im try to build a fusor.

  • It's not a good idea to disconnect the BNC cable with the geiger counter on. You should turn off the counter before attaching or removing the probe to avoid damage.

  • Looks very clean. Nice geiger counter. I think you got a good deal on it. It's a keeper for sure.

  • where did you buy that?

  • I got it on ebay. You would be lucky to find another one like this for 255. there is one on ebay for 165 buy it now but it doesnt have a probe and its model 2. the item number is 300324823721, copy and paste that into the search bar on ebay

  • ok thanks

  • yes

  • I didnt show the check source cause i just wanted to show the counter in this video. i will do one in a week or so cause im leaving on vacation. Thanks for commenting!
