Second, what the Constitution DOES say (specifically, in the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause) is that we all have equal rights and protections under the law. Therefore, we all have a right to marriage... whethere you agree with it or not. Therefore, the CA Supreme Court had every right to overturn the law!

When parents heard, they were powerless to do anything because they had no say in what was taught. Actually, hughster41, you're completely wrong, for 2 reasons. First, there's also nothing in the constitution that says a man and a woman have the right to get married. Second, what the Constitution DOES say (specifically, in the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause) is that we all have equal rights and protections under the law. Therefore, we all have a right to marriage... whethere you agree with it or not. Therefore, the CA Supreme Court had every right to overturn the law!

Gays want to live their own lives, and have every right under the Constitution. No religion or one group of people has a monopoly on, "traditional values." The gay members in my family own businesses, have children, are good neighbors. We are traditional in that we place ...love of family first.

Mating can not be achieved by definition between two of anything of the same sex. This is also what dictates sex between two members of the same sex, in the same species as Un-Natural...
Marriage is based on a Judeo-Christian Ethic, and therefore can NOT be devoid of God, and, or the church. Therefore a Civil-Union may come to pass between same sex couples, but not a marriage.

Munlinlin7, stay on issue please...sex between same sex members in humans denies the possibility of offspring. It is therefore considered an "un-natural" act by the Law of Nature. That doesn't mean it is right, or wrong, simply un-natural.
A marriage is based on a religious belief, a union of two people of the opposite sex that could "potentially" have offspring. If they choose not to, are barren, or are simply too old to have children really doesn't matter.

Second point: If marriage is a Judeo-Christian--or even just religious--institution, why is it a state issue at all? According to the precedent laid down by our Founding Fathers, the church should always be separate from the state. So why is this a state issue at all? Have ALL couples get civil unions, and leave marriage to the churches completely. "Separate but equal" is no more acceptable now than it was during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s.

Munlinlin7, what our FF did not want was a State Sponsored Church. They were afterall, fleeing from the Church of England in part by coming here to begin with.
The state endorses the marriage by default for record keeping and taxation purposes, not for any religious reasoning.
Gay Marriage is NOT a Civil Rights issue, but one of religion.

but the supreme court ruled in 1878 that there is to be a "wall of separation" between church and state. that is why u can't force prayers in school or have religious symbols on government buildings. the church has no part in the govt. that would b a theocracy which always leads to Fascism. The US is a Democracy where religion has no influence in teh govt.

The US Const is interrpreted in many ways, and the FF's wanted to prevent a "state sponsored church", similar to the Church of England. It was never their intent are creating a gov't devoid of religious guidance.

they wanted to separate church and state b/c they saw what happens when a religious govt is established. whenever there is a religious govt it turns fascist. look at the catholic puritan & english churches. they violated basic first amendment rights. they saw how horrible relgigious govts are. prop 8 isnt about religion its about protecting the 14th Amendment which guarantees equal protection of the law & was used to ban separate but equal. Thats what this is about.

gay ppl r naturally occuring. 8% of the population does not choose to be gay. there are gay & bi animals in nature. and marriage isnt a judeo christian ethic. gay ppl & the concept of marriage existed long b4 the bible did. and if marriage isnt supposed to b religious then why are atheists allowed to marry? marriage isnt a sacrament in this country, it is a civil contract arising out of a personal relationship. there is a separation of church and state for a reason.

I don't think you are totally right about the founding fathers being non-Christian, but that really isn't the issue. I'm not homosexual, I don't hate them, my best friend is gay. I just want traditional values for my kids. Gays can teach what they want in their homes, and I should be able to do the same. I don't want it taught in the schools, I don't want it pushed on me! That is your right, I also think that gays should have insurance etc. We just need to find a way to live together

Except the fact this issue has been dealt with and found not to be a "medical problem". I find it amusing that there are still people who think homosexuality is a mental issue when major health organizations like the APA and other worldwide have already stated that homosexuality is considered normal and not a mental disorder.

It disturbs me how you guys talk about the misrepresentation of the black community, women, and of course gays, but then continually keep polygamists out of the discussion. Why are we kept out of the agenda when we love each other just as much and take care of our children just as much as gay couples do? It's not fair, and it's completely bigoted and contradictory for California, especially 'liberal' California, to defend its gay couples and then turn its back when we plead. Equality for ALL!!

I'll tell you why its a problem. because if it is legal in the state, the tax funded schools are required to teach gay marriage as an acceptable alternative to actual marriage. because it is the law of the land the parents have no "opt out" option for their children, and like it or not that is their prerogative, bigots or not, its their decision, not the states. if it wasn't for that, I and many others probably wouldn't care so much.

I don't think it was nice to call him a prick for simply stating his opinion. :( I can vouch for this though: in Connecticut, 6-year olds were being red a story from an illustrated book about a family with two fathers...a gay married couple. When parents heard, they were powerless to do anything because they had no say in what was taught. It should be at the parents' discretion to teach children about homosexuality, not yours or mine or the government's. That's what worried voters the most.

Actually it IS at the parents' discretion whether or not to teach their children to be ignorant or bigoted. Absolutely. But that's not what I meant. What I mean is that children should be taught a moral code based on what their parents believe is right for them, not based on what you or I think. After all, it's their children. Here's how MY mother put it: "It's hard enough to find love out there, so when we do find it, who cares if it's with a man or a woman?"

No, you're taking what I say out of context. And please, calm down before you have a heart attack! ;) Homosexuality is complex because it is an emotional as well as sexual relationship. What about the child's moral upbringing? And by that I mean, what if the child is raised in a religious household and it's against his/her family's belief system? I'm not saying it's okay to raise kids to hate others, but it IS okay to raise them to be tolerant, even if they don't agree with it.
