Um, Sondheim is amazing, God knows, but I'm pretty sure this video is of ALW's work, yes? Let's not try to lessen the accomplishments of this brilliant man, just because you can think of someone that may do it a bit better. It's amazing to me that anyone could compose anything this wonderful, let's celebrate that in itself, yeah?
Love both these folks, but I saw this same show in Palm Desert, CA three years ago. With all due respect, it's NOT a good show. I can't believe they're doing it on Broadway. To me, the biggest problem was that Mandy wrote the entire show. He's a great performer but NOT a writer. You can tell immediately when watching this show. I was shocked at how bad it is. Not sure what the reviews will be like but it's not a good show in spite of their amazing talent.
They changed the key later on, and Mandy Patinkin sounded so much better. (He truly is one of my 3 tenors~.. next to Colm Wilkinson and Michael Crawford) <3
This is the only time I've ever imagined saying this, but...Patti, you don't need to belt everything just because you CAN. And I'll probably never say that again because she's usually perfect.
@MithraMusic This is how she usually sings it when accompanied only by a piano....she belts it more as a contrast, versus when there's a whole orchestra and she usually sings it softer like in the cast recording
I want to start by saying I am a HUGE Patti fan, but this performance- not so much. The beauty of doing this role so long ago was she was around the same age as the real Eva Perone. I think now, she has lost touch with her and therefore the song.
@041791ms yeah she was like 25 when she played Evita, which is fantastic considering those that usually play her now are like in their 30's no longer are they 25 which shows how wonderful Patti is
I think Soundheim and Webber are both brilliant! There is no comparison because they are both completely different. ALW does opera/operetta while Soundheim does more typical musical theatre work like West Side or Gypsy. Personally, I like both for different reasons. I think ALW's storytelling through music is deeper than Soundhiem's but Soundheim's shows have only a few "showstoppers" and ALW's shows are like one big showstopper. They are two different people. No comparison.
Sondheim was absolutely one of the worst composers after he left Styne.
Obviusly, you have not a clue as to what you are talking about.
Sondheim could not write a toilet paper jingle after he left Styne, this shows how uneducated you are, and also totally tone deaf, he wrote and conducted songs that were very UNFRIENDLY to singers. You are not knowing great lyricists and composers.
@AmericaLoudNClear I'm sorry I have my own opinion. I'm just gonna sit here now and see if I care what you think of me and my opinions.......I have come to my conclusion: I don't give a crap.
Did you ever think that just maybe standards of quality have no only dropped but have crashed and what you consider good is awful crap to someone who was around to see theater in its great days?
@AmericaLoudNClear clearly you don't care much for Sondheim but there is a significant contingent of Theatre fans who would disagree with your opinions. Perhaps you should step back and consider that before you are so blatantly rude. You have your opinion but that doesn't give you the right to call them stupid which is basically what you have done here.
this audience SUCKS!!! if she were to go anywhere else it would be nothing but roars and claps and whistles because she made this song to great and as well as it made her. oy
this video made me car sick, or video sick!!! Loved the music but the constant movement hurt my tummy!! :-) Thanks for the video though I'm going to see Patti and Mandy in March in Austin, TX
However, from the true theater aficionado's perspective it's the opposite view--Sondheim =first class, while ALW= second class (appeals more to the masses)
ALW is Haydn and Sondheim is Beethoven. One writes what people want to hear, the other demands that the people hear what he writes. I am in favour of the latter. Words cannot describe sondheim's genius
Yeah, he does not sing High Flying Adored very often. When they first began, he sang Oh What a Circus. Not sure why he edits himself out, but he does. He didn't sing HFA at either of the two concerts in NY that I went to this year.
I completely agree. However, in the eyes of Broadway, Sondheim is usually looked at as a second class citizen because he won't write the mega hits like ALW does.
Not that Sondheim doesn't know how... his name is found with the likes of West Side Story and Gypsy. He just refuses to admit to it.
Absolutely! It's rather ironic - he gets a bad name for not being an arrogant snob. *grins*
And he would have every right to be one if he wanted. And Lloyd Webber has NO right to be one. Honestly, anyone who could even compare the shallow glitz of Cats or Phantom with the sheer complexity and emotion of Gypsy or Sweeney Todd clearly doesn't know the theatre.
@tomsmith127 I'm more prone to Sondheim, who is for sure a more theatrical musical writer I think Webber is brilliant for having the same score throughout a particular musical, all the has to do is change the lyrics, however Webber creates more fantastical musicals, Phantom, Cats, Evita where as Sondheim creates musicals that people can as reality yes even Sweeney Todd lol
@tomsmith127 You guys are absolutely right. Evita is IMO the closest to a masterpiece ALW has written, but still Sondheim is on a very different level.
@tomsmith127 Good point. Weber seems to punish his actors with ridiculous high and low notes in the same songs. Sondheim seems to hold his performers in higher regard. Patti's autobiography is a great read. Her experience with Lord Andrew is quite eventful and interesting. She got a huge settlement after he screwed her over and gave Sunset Boulevard to Glenn Close. Patti was the original in London with a contract for Broadway.
@Rodeo6521 What are you talking about? All singers say how incredibly difficult Sondheim's songs are to sing. LuPone has said she has never sung certain songs correctly...
@tomsmith127 well you're forgetting something: Webber only wrote the music to his musicals, someone else wrote the lyrics whereas Soundheim wrote the lyrics as well as the music. So i don't think thats a fair contrast considering Webber's songs aren't a hundred percent webber. It's not Webbers fault if you consider the words to Evita more "pop" than "theatrical musical" because he didn't write them so don't call it his. Besides in a way all musicals can be considered both "pop" and "theatrical"
@Applescruffghostbust Actually, my feeling is that Webber was much better when he had Tim Rice's lyrics.
Not sure if tom smith was referring to the lyrics or the music. Personally, I find Sondheim's music and lyrics more deeply satisfying than Webber's. Also, there are no Sondheim shows I hate, but I can't say the same about Webber. The Rice/Webber musicals are some of my favourites tho.
As for Pop vs. Theatrical - gourmet food is amazing, but sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.
Mandy and Patti are the definitive Che and Evita...I was so irritated when they finally filmed the movie that Mandy didn't get to play Che...thanks for posting!!!!!!

Not really the right forum I know, but still:
I don't want to seem snobbish, but there's aheck of a difference between Andrew Lloyd Webber's writing and Sondheim's.
I personally think Webber's more of a 'pop' musical writer, whereas Sondheim is a theatrical musical writer, if that makes sense.
tomsmith127 2 years ago 28
I totally agree.
ALW can sure write a hit, but Stephen Sondheim can write a masterpiece (if there is even a word for it.)
