i used a special camera set up with a platform and lighting system, but you can also just use a regular camera, as long as it stays perfectly still. it's called stop animation, and you just click the record button on the camera real fast and take 1 second clips and move the object slightly each time you take a clip and then it plays together. it's fairly easy.
