@pchabz Damn. . .well i have had them all for over a year in a 100 gal tank now and so far so good. The angels are as big as an opened hand and only my female veiled angel will shove the blood parrot out of its territory every now and then. All the fish have been doing really good. The ghost eats out of my hand and has never once attacked anything . not even the mollies(luckily). I have also read that a ghost knife will only get a little over 12-14 inches in a home tank. 16 inches in rare cases.
@Stardustarmor24 slow growth rate you got going on there. I have 3 right now growing in a 55 (soon to move up to a bigger tank once i sell off my angry arowana) there probly about a year old and ones 1 foot then ones 8 inches, and ones a bit younger at 6 inches. bottom feeding tablets are very good. The black ghost knives in my tank have eaten 1 4 inch ornate bichir and 1 5 in needle gar over the time ive owned them. I was suprised... ate eyes out then picked dead bodies clean
Hi i wanted to know if its ok to keep this fish with 5 mollies, 3 angels, 1 dwarf gourami, and 5 albino cory catfish in a 75 gallon decorated and planted tank? I also wanted to get a red tail shark but not if it will be to territorial for the knifefish. My Ghost knife is only about 3 inches right now.
@Stardustarmor24 eventually the black ghost knife will eat your little fishies! They will eat dead fish as well so if fish go missing overnight there probly the culprit. The angelfish will be bullies to your black ghost knife and cause it to hide all the time. Or until it gets mad enough and starts biting off chunks of your angelfish. Much larger fish are usually a better choice. However your Gourami depending on what kind can also be a bully when older. Bad mix you got going on
Very nice BGK. Just like to ask how shy/nocturnal are they? Do you see them quite a bit during the day or mostly during feeding? Just debating on getting this fish or The african brown knife, just heard theyre less shy than BGK. THnx.
@f2warbound If your worried about shyness then i think the African Brown Knife would be better, because my BGK always hides out in the back of my tank under my large peice of driftwood. He comes out only when im feeding him, and then when he goes back into hiding, i can only see parts of him moving around in the back, but i guess if you got a transparent tube and placed it up front, he would always be in view, and still be able to not get to stressed out.
@IIultrasparkzII Hey thnx for response. How much more active will an African knife be tho? I think I might just get a ghost knife instead n use transparent tube, maybe some low watt lighting n more floating plants to give it a bit of encouragement. Very nice looking fish.
Glad to hear advices from people that had kept them. Cheers
first i bought a big black ghost knife fish i loved it but she always love to hide so i bought another small one she dont hide alot i liked seeing it so i bought another small black ghost knife fish
i just got mine and i bought that "hide and see" tube but he doesnt go in it. i legit just bought him a few hours ago and he just swims around and hides behind some driftwood. does he need the tube or can he just hide where ever?
Hey great looking knife. do you, or did u have any problems with your knife eating any of his tank mates? i have a 75 gallon and wanted to have a black ghost knife and a school of cardinal tetras?
lol, not quite, but they do create and receive electrical signals from their environment. In my Animal Physiology lab, we placed electrodes around them and we got to see the frequency and amplitude of their signals ^^
It may be possible that they can feel the electrical pulse of your heartbeat, as long as you are creating enough disruption in the fish's field for it to detect you. When they detect a disturbance in their electrical field, it creates sort of an image in their brain of what is disrupting their electrical field. It could be food, an obstacle, or a conspecific (another member of its kind).
@annie4horses :) Cool though. Like I said maybe nightvision? Radar? Heat seeking type of way it reacts. If only scientist had something to do with an auptospy of one.
@TheLostRealist513 There are other fishes like this. For example, Peter's elephantnose fish (Gnathonemus petersii) usually just called "the elephant nose". You should Google it, he's a really cool looking fish!
Assuming you have real plants, which def looks like it. What type of substrate and lighting system do you have? CO2 injector? Sorry kinda off topic of the BGK, but I'm planning a similar planted tank.
i have african black knife hes about 9 inchs maybe close to 10 he has his own 35 gallon tank he loves it i bought like 10 neons and they were all gone in like 2 weeks lol u can hear him eatin them like water splashin and stuff lol
please, answer me 2 questions about this fish... (1) can i get 3 BGKs in my 30 gallons aquarium? (2) can they fight with each other ? ... i really want to have 3 BGKs and i hope everyone will help me about this problem , thanks!
I have owned several of these over the years. I don't know a lot about aquariums but these are by far my fav fish. Not hard to take care of and the best part is feeding them from my hand at the same time every night.
Nice, mine is small, he eats freezedried bloodworms and mysis shrimp mostly, but also loves the tilapia I throw in the tank for my pictus cat. And it very well may eat neons, if it can catch them. And it probably killed the elephant fish do it producing a similar electrical signal as the BGK and it thought it was another BGK, they are aggressive towards eachother.
@rightfredsdead ruckaisawesome is correct, you CANNOT keep more than one BGK in a small tank. Perhaps you have a huge tank to house three but if you dont eventually they will start fighting one another
@Tapil nahhh, i very much doubt that, i have a black ghost and it doesnt bother attacking neons, it is a very small chance of it even showing aggresion never mind killing something, BUT i have to mention although i never attacks anyhting now just sticks to his own thing it did kill a elephant fish i had but he was new in the tank then, so if you let it get used to being in a comunity then i think it may ignore other fish.
It's true, you can't keep more than one in a single tank, not to mention that they get huge. Their electric "shocks" will get tangled and even if they might seem fine, it's not the right environment for them.
@rightfredsdead dont be talking shit to me just cuz u know nothin about these fish. people like u doesnt deserve to keep pets becuz u dont give a shit about their well being.
i got two ghost knifes, they arent that big about 15 maybe 20 cm, sometimes they start to act really strange, they start swiming around facing eachother and then taking bites out of eachothers faces, they keep this going for a good hour then they just stop.. anyone know what that means? do i have to get rid of one? are they mating and im too daft to realise it? lol
@stanthekid990 u should never keep 2 bgk in same tank unless it's a huge tank..they r electrical fish and thus feels uneasy when there is another near them. eventually, one will kill the other
This is an amazionical fish. Here in Brazil we call it Ituí Cavalo. Really cool fish, not rare in stores. It has night habits and feeds of plants or, in some cases, small fish.
My BGK is a thick 11" and lets my two 4" clown loaches sleep on him in a log during the day. Very cool fish and loves to be hand fed and will swim between my fingers and lay in my hand if i have a cube of bloodworms.
superpiemonster dont worry about what the shop guy says just buy them i have a small tank for my little oscar but im gonna put him in a bigger one later so if you want one just get one screw the shop keepers
They are known for eating anything that can fit in their mouth. They have very large mouths, even with it doesn't look like it. When buying one of these guys, it's good to keep in mind that they will grow to at least a foot long, if not longer. (longest reach almost two feet).
its an amazing fish, my neighbor has one and the first time I saw it I was amazed.. doesn't look like a fish, more like a snail with it's underbelly fins (?)
I want to get one of these, but i'm not to sure how they'll go with my fish. I have a peaceful tank but don't want anyone one to get eaten, like the smaller guppies.
Amazing...but I suppose those little neon are for feeding, cause I have a BGK about the half of that and it ate 4 T. neon in the tank in just 2 days. 5/5
Not particularly. No harder than normal fish. I've had mine for about a year and half now and he's still goin strong. He's never tried to eat any of the other fish (white clouds, phantom tetras, bristlenose's) and above all they look very cool. It's bogus about what they say about the plastic pipes and them liking to hide. This thing is always wanting to be the center of attention and will swim into and through my hands. Very cool.
@adamjhulk try feeding your ghost knife blood worms - the blood scent attracts him out, it would come out more during the day if you did. - These fish will eat all the smaller fish slowly especially as it gets bigger!
I just got a BGK about that size a little over a month ago. He still doesn't come out during the day, hope he does eventually cause they are awesome to watch.
I just got a BGK about 3 inch long, smallest fish in tank is 3/4 inch long. Any chance the BGK sees it a a snack? Anyways i just fed my fish some bloodworm jello and i left some on my finger and held it in the water, the BGK immediately started nibbling it off :D And does he see small rams horn snails as food?
yes he is going to eat them. You Shouldent buy the fish unless your tank is atleast 100 gallons (360 litres) And you should only keep him with big fish-
beautiful specimen, mine lives in my 4 ft communial tank with lots of neons and other small community fish and has never to my knowledge eaten or tried to eat any of its neighbours, it loves all food (greedy) esp bloodworms...be warned...they can get very big, my friend has a huge 6 foot tank and his BGK has gotta be getting on for a foot long!
Sorry for the double post people, but my neon tetra are one of only 2 groups of neon tetra I know of that are constantly fighting... any thoughts? Please help...
If people read the comments they'd see that the neons are cardinals & they survive 'cos they've been in the tank with that thing since it was small... however other fish have... dissapeared...
I'd LOVE one of these, but then again, I love my lil' neons way too much & I can't trust BGK enough to get him... lack of a decent handout on payday (I work in a petstore, we sell fish like this) is also an issue :-(
i have two BGK in a 2ft tank (not sure on volume in gallons im aussie!) they are both 2 years old, one is 7in and the other 5.. i have no idea what you have been feeding yours to make them that big!!
I had one for under a year in a 55 gallon tank and he simply got too large for the tank. I sold him to a fish keeper that was going to house him in a 75 gallon tank by himself. When I had him in the 55 gallon he was well over 18" long. Now he is over 26" in length 6 months later. If you are wanting to keep and house a BGK I would recommend a 75 gallon + tank with only a few quick mid sized fish. They will eat anything large enough that will fit in their mouths. I had mine with Adult Angels.
what are you feeding him i had mine 4 years now and he is 17 inches check out my vid...i just put him in my new 135 gallon he was in a 55 gallon...i just wanna know how you got him so big so fast....
LOL..i got a BGK with Oscars bigger than him along with silver arowana and red ear slider turtles and african cichlids..the rest of my fish dont mind BGK but my african cichlids keep biting his fins and tail and damaged so i removed the african cichlids out of the tank ..just check my video...you'll see my BGK gettin chased by 2 smaller 2" african cichlids*cries*
A semi aggressive tank perhaps. BGKs will be alright with small to medium sized (3-5 inch) cichlids, but don't put it with any aggressive fish bigger than that.
Ex. don't put him in with Oscars. While the Oscars probably won't terrorize him too bad, they will bump into him (like Oscars always do) and this will scare the BGK and all he will ever do is hide.
The more passive tankmates you get for your black ghost knifefish the more he will come out and play.
I just got one today, I have it in my office, with a Pleco and a small Black Angel, don't know if because is its new home but it only hides, it's about 2.5 in, so the pleco too, and the angel doesn't has a inch. I was thinking on get a Convict, small of course, about 1 in. They're in a 10 gallon, any advice will be helpful, thank you.
Him wanting to hide all the time is totally normal. This fish is nocturnal (active in the night) and will hide during the day. He must be fed at night for the first month or so b/c he won't even come out to eat during the daytime.
I had my BGK in a 10 gallon at first too. It literally took about 1 month for him to outgrow it. Now he's in a 55. Typically the minimum size tank you really want for a black ghost is 55 gallons. You can get away with a 40 gallon, but 55 is what he really wants.
Black Ghost Knife Fish will eat anything that fits in its mouth, although; it's mouth is really small compared to the size of the fish itself. I have had mine for 1 and a half months now, and it has grown dramatically to roughly 14-inches in a 300 ltr aqaurium. But it did eat my 5 of my Neon Tetras at first, but ever-since it has been fine and not attacked any of my other fish.

thanks and also what size tank do they need?
fishdude1995 2 years ago
are these hard to take care of?
fishdude1995 2 years ago
@fishdude1995
Very cool.

what kind of food is that?? anybody know? mine seems like he never eats but he is still alive...
adamjhulk 2 years ago
@adamjhulk try feeding your ghost knife blood worms - the blood scent attracts him out, it would come out more during the day if you did. - These fish will eat all the smaller fish slowly especially as it gets bigger!
naastyprincess 2 years ago
its some kind of frozen food
qwerty134098 2 years ago

Anyways i just fed my fish some bloodworm jello and i left some on my finger and held it in the water, the BGK immediately started nibbling it off :D And does he see small rams horn snails as food?

does he eat your tetras? i want to get a black ghost but i have neons and i thought they might get eaten. Please let me know
JLTantrum 2 years ago
yes he is going to eat them. You Shouldent buy the fish unless your tank is atleast 100 gallons (360 litres) And you should only keep him with big fish-
Graome 2 years ago
my tank is 75litres and ive had my ghost knife since he was 1inch long, he is now 3inches long and he seems prity happy
orgasmoman69 2 years ago
beautiful specimen, mine lives in my 4 ft communial tank with lots of neons and other small community fish and has never to my knowledge eaten or tried to eat any of its neighbours, it loves all food (greedy) esp bloodworms...be warned...they can get very big, my friend has a huge 6 foot tank and his BGK has gotta be getting on for a foot long!
fish2531 2 years ago
Sorry for the double post people, but my neon tetra are one of only 2 groups of neon tetra I know of that are constantly fighting... any thoughts? Please help...
vodkasvictim 2 years ago
If people read the comments they'd see that the neons are cardinals & they survive 'cos they've been in the tank with that thing since it was small... however other fish have... dissapeared...
I'd LOVE one of these, but then again, I love my lil' neons way too much & I can't trust BGK enough to get him... lack of a decent handout on payday (I work in a petstore, we sell fish like this) is also an issue :-(

i have two BGK in a 2ft tank (not sure on volume in gallons im aussie!) they are both 2 years old, one is 7in and the other 5.. i have no idea what you have been feeding yours to make them that big!!
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
I had one for under a year in a 55 gallon tank and he simply got too large for the tank. I sold him to a fish keeper that was going to house him in a 75 gallon tank by himself. When I had him in the 55 gallon he was well over 18" long. Now he is over 26" in length 6 months later. If you are wanting to keep and house a BGK I would recommend a 75 gallon + tank with only a few quick mid sized fish. They will eat anything large enough that will fit in their mouths. I had mine with Adult Angels.
xDetroitMetalx 2 years ago
what are you feeding him i had mine 4 years now and he is 17 inches check out my vid...i just put him in my new 135 gallon he was in a 55 gallon...i just wanna know how you got him so big so fast....

Very good looking fish, you are very lucky :D
lilbluependragon 2 years ago
I have one of those.
Got into a fight with my shrimp, and got his tail ripped off.
He did a good job of eating all of the smaller fish in the tank.
xaxisxophiodes 2 years ago
I hope he doesn't eat my redtail shark.
febreezy3000 2 years ago
you should not have to worry about it. Red Tailed Cats are much larger that a Black Ghost
1992pattrow 2 years ago
The stupid thing keeps attacking the black ghost.
febreezy3000 2 years ago
i used to have one thaey are very cool do you think a new one would be suitible for a semi agressive to aggressive tank plesae comment
swirlboards159 2 years ago
A semi aggressive tank perhaps. BGKs will be alright with small to medium sized (3-5 inch) cichlids, but don't put it with any aggressive fish bigger than that.
Ex. don't put him in with Oscars. While the Oscars probably won't terrorize him too bad, they will bump into him (like Oscars always do) and this will scare the BGK and all he will ever do is hide.
The more passive tankmates you get for your black ghost knifefish the more he will come out and play.
Hope this helps :-)
TheLostRealist1985 2 years ago
I just got one today, I have it in my office, with a Pleco and a small Black Angel, don't know if because is its new home but it only hides, it's about 2.5 in, so the pleco too, and the angel doesn't has a inch. I was thinking on get a Convict, small of course, about 1 in. They're in a 10 gallon, any advice will be helpful, thank you.
pablo2cabrera 2 years ago
Him wanting to hide all the time is totally normal. This fish is nocturnal (active in the night) and will hide during the day. He must be fed at night for the first month or so b/c he won't even come out to eat during the daytime.
I had my BGK in a 10 gallon at first too. It literally took about 1 month for him to outgrow it. Now he's in a 55. Typically the minimum size tank you really want for a black ghost is 55 gallons. You can get away with a 40 gallon, but 55 is what he really wants.
TheLostRealist1985 2 years ago
I would wait till the black ghost is about 4 inches or so before introducing a cichlid into the tank
TheLostRealist1985 2 years ago
you know bgk's get up to 24in or larger so you might want to invest in a 55 gallon+

Tuscuttar 2 years ago
I've got one i've had it a few weeks and 3 of my other fish now have BGKF mouth shaped bites out of their tails:( Otherwise a very cool fish
