Unless the tobacco is crispy dry and takes a deep light as soon as the flame touches it, I always do a charring light. Flakes often require two or three charring lights to get them going for me.
I mostly smoke flakes, and use charring light all the time. I am a relatively new to pipe smoking so I find it difficult to smoke a pipe and actually do something, apart from a nice conversation or casual browsing of reddit of something. Strangely cannot smoke and work. Don't have the technique down I guess.
I always do a first light then I tamp and then I do the main light. Sometimes it needs a relight sometimes i doesn't, tends to be the second tho wen it's loaded up with flake.
I like some others do a 3 step light. It may take a bit longer but usually I have zero relights after I do this. If i don't do this I end up spending more time lighting my pipe then smoking. Hahah!
Flakes are harder to smoke for me. I really have to rub them out to get a good burn out of them.
I always do a charring light, tamp, relight scenario. Often with flakes it takes me three or more relights to get them going well.I enjoy the ritual I suppose...
I tend to use the charring light with flakes and anything moist. That's a handsome looking pipe by the way. It must be a good size because it doesn't look tiny in your freakishly huge paw :-)
initially I lit a pipe by the numbers: char light; tamp; main light - now, though, if the first flame gets the bowl going, there you have it - tamp as needed - the only flake I've tried to date was the 1792 - quite strong and fun to get lit - have some other flakes on the way and intend to experiment with 'loading' techniques (folding vs rubbing kind of thing) - are you enjoying the 1792? - stuff knocked me on my b'narse - had a nice flavour though - take care, J - MM
I never worry too much about following the "methods" of pipe smoking. I do use a charring light however. I find the bowl burns a bit more evenly. Cool vid,
I always use a charring light. I think it is mostly out of habit now.
As you see from my videos, I sometime am relighting my tobacco 3 or 4 times. I tend to put my pipe down while talking to others or doing other things, then have to relight it.
i have to admit that i used to do the charring light more often before to help me lit my pipe properly but now adays i just dont need it to maintain an even smoke, but on the other hand with flakes i hv to do the charring light other wise they r so hard to lit completely and evenly in the first light,,neat book cover u hv there mate
I like to keep my baccy nice and tiddy so I char a couple times with tamping to even everything up. Seem to burn better and keeps the rim from getting burned. Flakes I do the same with.
I always use a charring light....sometimes 2...with tamps in between...ideally u want a thin layer of ash on TOP of the tobacco...which protects the burning embers underneath ....in my experience i get a better burn that way...i used matches for years (flakes can be a pain with matches) then several cheap pipe lighters...then i bought a IM corona old boy...have never looked back...cheers

Yeah I do a charring light though I did not know that is what it is called. I light then tamp then light again.
Maybe you can explain briefly what a charring light is for.

Personally, I always do the charring light. Perhaps it is just habit. I usually end up doing several "false lights" on flakes.

i made a discovery if you use Flamethrower instead of match
you don't need charring light.
one problem i need to over come, the pipe catching on fire it annoying since you will need new pipe every time you smoke
flakes.
