Think I'm off to get CD of all my old vinyl. Forgotten how good this album was. A great band at their best. Although in interviews all the rest said it was th Lamb Lies down tour finished them off, I still think it is a tribute to a magic moment of English musical history.
I was at this show w/my buddy Bill...and it was amazing. What you miss in this video is the initial part where he slowly crawls out of this tube at the back of the stage, like some kind of worm...
Am I the only one who thinks Rael is in a gay bar here(Slippermen, could it be the lube?) I mean he just finishes eating some snake in the song prior to this and at the end he has a doctor cut off his penis (sex change?)
LOL! Now that is an interesting interpretation! Rael is real scrambled...I always thought "The Lamb" was about a guy with multiple personalities struggling to bring the two together...which he ultimately does in the end.
Fantastic material, Mr. Tommygun128. I'm delighted seeing all your Genesis videos. When I was at school and university (Bogotá, Colombia), in the late 70s and in early 80s, it was just imposible to get live stuff from Genesis' Peter Gabriel era. This song in particular is one of my all-time rock favourites. 70-74 Genesis was a really great band. Their problem, musical critics hate everything that come out from the ghettos. For them, their sin was to be middle-class and conservatory guys.
Agreed. The other "problem" - as all Genesis fans know - is that they always were considered uncool. In my humble opinion it's: they were way too good for those critics. They couldn't handle it. The Lamb is an 80 minute ride with no dull spot in it. I saw it performed by The Musical Box. It's a copy but a good one. Half of the audience sung each and every note and the other half was airdrumming. Now that's what I call a fanbase: they don't fake liking Genesis, they love 'em!
I wish I could see the stuff they projected behind them... the Super 8 footage doesn't do it justice... the photo cut-ins are much better but other than Armando gallo's pix... there isn't much...
I saw The Lamb live at the Academy of Music in New York City on December 6, 1974 and still is my favorite concert ever too! I bought Tommygun's dvd/cd set off of ebay and it is worth every penny! Thanks for letting me relive this Tommy!
Thank you for posting! I was there at the Shrine at 14 yrs old (sixth row!). No better band ever or since (for me), no close second either. This was awesome. Thank you.
Even though I've been to dozens of Genesis, Steve Hackett(solo), and Peter Gabriel(solo) concerts, nothing can touch this show!!! My sister and I (and 3 friends) sat in the sixth and seventh rows center. Our dad was a shriner and somehow managed to procure the tickets!? Thanks a lot for the memories.
Manson? Na. More like Tool and Maynard. After seeing Tool live I feel as far as performance there has to be so much influence in what we see here to Tools performance and song writing. Tool is one of the closest modern day equals to Old Genesis. Though Genesis is the Best band in history check out some live Tool performances.
Yeah! I've too noticed the parallels between Genesis and Tool. Even noticed that in 1 pic of Tool, MJK has reverse-mohawk styled like PG used to sport in the glory days of Genesis
oh phill in his top-days! keeping fluid and tight as a box, realy colouring the music with all his finely tuned riffs and fills, and doing the backing vocals as well! greatgreatgreat.
beautiful footage from this beautiful strangestrange era in music
i always thought gabriel looked like puf n stuf with really bad acne and genital warts (in the costume, not naturally).:) cool footage dude.
ogre from skinny puppy was extremely influenced by gabriel... he used to wear a costume very similiar to gabriels onstage in the late 80's but it had needles sticking all in it instead of warts.
What musical group today would have the balls to go out on stage like that and perform? This was a different era. Showmen like Peter Gabriel and Ian Anderson were defining the stage performances of their era. We can only look back and yes, laugh, but also applaud their vision.
I think Phil is a solid drummer, however in no way in my opinion is his voice even close to as good as Peter's voice. Peter is recognized as one of the best voices ever in rock.
The comparison between Gabriel and Collins is pointless. I think Phil is a better singer technically than Peter and of course is the king of drums, but no way shape form can Phil match Peter in writing songs or lyrics. The pop Genesis is good, but the Prog Genesis is legend and absolutely amazing.
Agreed. Progressive Genesis is the best, and is absolutely amazing. (While pop Genesis has its moments, I don't actively listen to it like I do progressive Genesis) Although I believe that Peter is a better singer. He has a throaty quality that Phil does not have.
Completely agree. Collins has to be one of the most underrated drummers out there. He not only plays in constantly changing complex time signatures, he also has the ability to basically solo and keep time throughout all the madness. Truly legendary.
PC is of course a very great drummer... history has proven that. He is not however anything legendary. His contribution to the CRAFT of percussion is minimal..
Legendary Rock Drummers:
Ringo Starr
Ginger Baker
Mitch Mitchell
Michael Giles
John Bonham
William Bruford
Neil Piert Each of these masters contributed greatly to DRUMMING as an institution. Of course most of the early and mid sixties drummers e.g. Baker, Mitchell and Bohnam were immulating the styles of others before them.
How about Keith Moon. Perhaps not great from a technical standpoint, but a unique style recognizable as his own. Others have tried to emulate the list above, few have succeeded. Few emulate Moon, none succeed.
Just noticed that 1:20-1:40, Hackett plays the starting chords to Rebecca, a song on the album To Watch The Storms. Surprised he remembered it and redid the entire thing.
This was such an amazing band. I'm SO happy to have seen the Lamb tour. I saw the "aftermath" aka "then there were three" and all I can compare it to is seeing Yoko after the Beatles broke up...
"And then there were three" still had very good quality material, esp. the Banks tracks (burning rope, many too many, lady lies), although the sound was mushy and bombastic, and so had Duke. The end of great Genesis really started with Abacab, which had some experimental charme, end was perfect with "Genesis" (no title) Album.
people don't bash Phil Collins cos' he's equally as good as Peter. What did u people expect would happen? that Gabriel would leave and collins would sound just exactly like Gabriel or do everything like Gabriel? so he writes different music than gabriel it doesn't make him a bad songwriter or a bad replacement! u people who hate collins should shut up! I respect both songwriters equally. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges.
Phil Collins, "that other singer", is a great pop songwriter, but he's nowhere near as good at prog as Peter Gabriel! He is the master storyteller, indeed.
But he only scored those two Disney films because money was dumped on him to get him to do it, I'd wager. Anyway, whether Phil Collins is a good pop songwriter or not, he sure can't write great stuff like this...oh wait, yes he can, he co-wrote Slippermen, if I remember correctly...anyway, he sure couldn't write this BY HIMSELF. HAW HAW.
Saw this show in Montreal Dec. '74, totally ahead of its time. Still today, it is THE Best show I have ever seen. Went to see The Musical Box performing Lamb in '04, great, but not the Real (or Rael)thing...but for those who missed it, it's the best next thing, right?
I have this entire album. Studio, Live at the Shrine, and The Archives edition. Gabriel used to be so miraculous at his live performances. Being 16, I'd give damn near anything to see The Lamb live in '75. But, since I was not yet alive, I can only forever thank the people who got this footage. Tommygun1028 sells copies of a bunch of Genesis live stuff (recordings and video). Hardcore fans should look into it because most of the video is incredible. Long Live Genesis (the real Genesis)!
go to :themusicalboxdotnet I've seen them five times (2x seilling england-3x the lamb) it is the closest you can get from the original thing. They are supported by all the original members, the slide view photos in The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are the originals from the '74-75 tour. Go see them if you have a chance. You'll feel like Marty McFly in that Back to the Future thing!
I was lucky enough to see them in 1982 with Gabriel (and Hackett for I know what I like) at M K bowl doing a one of reunion to bail out WOMAD that Peter was involved with. They were fantastic, played all of the old stuff as well as Gabriel drumming on Turn it on again. Just before the performance I was standing in the rain and a guy in the 'old man mask walked right past me' .I think it was PG as he used to do this sort of stuff.
Wow, great job piecing this all together to make this. Everyone rightly bemoans that no official film or video recording of The Lamb, Genesis' most extravagant stage show, was ever produced (someone in management was fired for that, I hope) but this is a very credible substitute and finally delivers what people for a long time could only imagine.
Saw this concert live - front row center. It was one of my all time favorite. Gabriel was great as usual. I still have the old LP with story inside. We went to see the farewell performance with Gabriel the next year and got in a car accident 2 blocks from the theater and missed it :( I heard he brought out all the costumes he ever wore on stage. Thanks for the post!
I couldn't agree more! I have to laugh at those morons who are shelling out $400 to go see what is nowadays being called "Genesis" on tour. Folks, save your money...It's not about the celebrities, it's about THE MUSIC!
