its unny on every dkm or flogging molly song, everyone wants to be irish or scottish, they say im 1/4 irish or my grandpa was half so im 1/8th. and there is a diffrence between irish and scottish, not much but there is a diffrence.
@dirkber Scots/irish is actually a group of people that settled in the US in the 1800s. Some were Scottish, most were Irish, but they were just lumped together and called Scots/Irish. They commonly hated the English though. My Mom is Scots/Irish. My Dad was English, right off the boat as they say. So yeah I'm 50% English and 50% Scottish & Irish.
@thepeterlong Chill the fuck out jackass, Knightriosmyhomeboy said nothing about St. Patrick being Irish you stupid, overreacting cunt! Grow up, go to school, and learn to read!

@americanTDz 'fraid so buddy! Saint Patrick was never a pirate, although that would have been cool as fuck! He was kidnapped by irish pirates from Britain and then brought back to Ireland where he was made to work as a slave. He then escaped back to Britain where he lived with his family. However he claimed that he heard voices asking him to return to Ireland to spread christianity so he did.
gentlemen please lets keep beliefs and nationalities out of this we're here to listin to a song not insult people but if you are here to insult people go the fuck away cause your bad attitude is not wanted here
@HarvardBoxer Don't lump all of the British in with the establishment fuckers, not all of us are rich tea-sipping Queen-loving cunts. There's a lot of us whose great-grandparents were in the workhouses and parents/ grandparents were in the mines and strikes.
@The1AndOnlyTUETE The problem is that many people choose to believe a comic book version of history. An interesting fact is that 10% of the British population has at least one Irish grandparent. The factories in the North of England during the industrial revolution ran on Irish labor. Don't give me that tired England Vs. Ireland shit it isn't true any more. Your fucking great grandparents could afford the boat all the way to America, mine could only afford to get as far as Liverpool.
The problem these days is people saying "[insert ethnicity] pride" like they're somehow God's [atheist here, just an analogy] chosen ones. Can't we just enjoy the music, and not say the things that have led to countless hours of strife among us?
@Deslocrawr The fact that there's nothing intrinsically special [aside perhaps from certain immunities to diseases] about it. Being proud of one's heritage necessarily creates prejudice, because it IS prejudice, in favor of that heritage.
@yrsnkd Nah... and there is something special about it... there is respecting your ancestors who worked hard, dealt with conflicts in there land, to make sure their kids, and their kids kids had a great future. And each culture brings something different to the plate, and you should be allowed to proudly say I"M IRISH AND DAMN PROUD... I think you are just ignorant.

This is a marvellous song so thumbs up to the Dropkicks for covering it. They also seem to have covered lots of other great Irish folk songs. Good for them - I just can't listen to them.
@Ridcully9 Its more for Boston Irish rather than Irish Irish. I lived in Ireland my whole life and i was brought up on everything from traditional irish music, to american soul and funk, to 60s and 70s rock, to 80s thrash metal lol. If youre traditional irish, you have to have an open mind to appreciate this. The Dropkick Murphys are my favorite band, there bitter sweet lyrics and vocals mixed with the hard rock and irish intrumentation. True Music!
And by the by, it's really hard to say anything meaningful in the space they give you in these comments. I probably spent more time editing my last post to say what I wanted to in as condensed a form as possible as I did writing it.
To throw my two cents in on the "are 'Irish-Americans' Irish or not" debate, those of us in the US (and I imagine anywhere in America) of mostly European descent are generally proud of our heritage, no matter how distant. Obviously, I can't go around saying I'm Irish, Cree or Quebecois as if I'm purely any of those. My family history, however, includes those, so they are important. I am, before all, a Vermonter, then an American, but I, as many in the Americas, cannot be reduced to 1 ethnicity.
@11thcup I agree with you. America is (or was supposed to be anyway) a celebration of our respective ethnicities while simultaneously acknowledging that we're all American and trying to get something done together. I'm the standard American white mix of Western European. I'm not Irish, but I recognize I'm part Irish; and therefore can respect daily drinking, fighting, fast music, and a deep appreciation of language. Irish, American, Texan. I consider myself a human first.
"American" is a nationality-not an ethnicity. The U.S. is and always has been balkanized along ethnic lines. The only people who don't refer to themselves as a hyphenated American are the WASPs-and it's getting harder and harder to find those bastards anywhere in the society.
::Proud Franco/Irishman::
Love the Dropkick Murphy's even if I've never set foot in Boston.
Is rud thar a bheith greannmhar silim an meid diospoireact faoi "an fior eireannaigh muid?"a mbionn an idir na daoine meireacanach le sinsir eireannach. @TheShwaKid1 that's fucking bullshit... I have gypsy blood but I'm born in the Netherlands, so what am I? A dutchman! If you aren't from Ireland, then you're not Irish, irish americans don't exist.

Was in the pit at one of their St. Patrick's Day shows in Boston when they did this song. One of the single most EPIC moments of my life. :D

"American" is a nationality-not an ethnicity. The U.S. is and always has been balkanized along ethnic lines. The only people who don't refer to themselves as a hyphenated American are the WASPs-and it's getting harder and harder to find those bastards anywhere in the society.

Love the Dropkick Murphy's even if I've never set foot in Boston.
