@JagoReedJones well im not expert, but one you're jumping off rock/earth and the other you're jumping off a springboard and ones a lot higher than the other. plus the way you land, you cant land headfirst from that high of a jump.

@JagoReedJones it's still cliff diving cause its like off a cliff, but probably also the height and stuff. plus they probably use a lot more energy running and then jumping out so this helps them one be farther out from the rock, and two get them the height they need.

The purpose for these kind of dives is to make less splash right? Us hawaiians got it backwards lol... our goal is to make the biggest splash. We jump off of cliffs and do "bombs". It causes the splash to reach higher than where we jump. What a contrast of styles lol...

This is what I thought (and what "Wikianswers" says:) Water is sprayed onto the pool surface, creating a ripple effect, so the diver can see the surface. Without it, the water takes on a glass-like appearance, and all you can see is the bottom of the pool. The diver needs to be able to spot the water surface in order to enter the water correctly in the vertical position. (I guess they do it for the same reason even if this is not a pool)

when you are high... you can only see the bottom of pool....you need something splashing on the water, so the diver could see the real distance between the tower and te surface of the water.

That's a myth. I've done 100+ foot cliffs routinely without any sort of "water detensioning" or what have you, with absolutely no adverse affects. It's all dependent on how you hit the water.
