I love how Avatards constantly bray about how "unique" Cameron's "vision" is. I say as someone who went into the theater expecting something unique that the visual plagiarism really jumped out at me, to the point of distraction. I have no qualms about the plot, as execution matters more than concept in that area, but when the movie's big selling point is the "new world" that it takes place in, that world had BETTER be NEW. I'd list what I noticed, but I'm running out of characters.

Awesome movie! i saw it 12 times in theaters and what an experience. Look folks this film was written in 93 before Pocahontas or Princess Mononoke or Last Samurai because he had to wait years for the technology until 2004 he got it made till 2009. I think it's a nice mix of Dune, Star Wars, Star Trek and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Cameron delivered.

The way Cameron tells this story, is the same boring way of any boring action movie : Guns, army, violence (but not a single drop of blood) and of course a bunch of gentle american scientists and a super-conscious G.I (lol) who can save this world...or another...Visually awesome, that's all.

I'm also writing and it is difficult to come up with something "original", but, like you say, the type of conflict has always been done before.

But then again, you don't have to be as unoriginal as you can get...

(Which Avatar surely is NOT.)

You mean lie Frank Herbert's brilliant Dune books? Cameron was heavily influenced by Hayao Miyazaki's anime masterpiece Nausicaa which is his fave of Miyazaki's movies, Heavy Metal comic magazine and Dune novels by Frank Herbert. Read Dune and check out the Dune movies like the 1984 failed attempt by David Lynch, the 2000 mini-series and Children of Dune and you'll find similarities. Also see Princess Mononoke.

When Cameron wrote the film in 1993 he had to wait until 2004 for the technology to catch up and he perfected the technology. Cameron was inspired by Westerns of the past, Edgar Burroughs, Frank Herbert's Dune, Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Nausicaa, Castle in The Sky, world history, Dark Crystal and of course Heavy Metal Magazine comics.

Another thing I did thought upon reading your comment was that all these 7 stories has one large story in comment: Good vs Evil...It's just for you as a filmmaker to pick your good side of the story and your evil.

Amazing movie, it was great when I saw it in 3D in the cinema. People were like "Oh" and "Woh" with several "Holy shit" lines here and there :P

Was also great to see some people next to me wiping away their tears.

i absolutely love this movie, best ever. when it was finished i just needed more, didnt want the movie to end. its a magic amazing and breathtaking world and the creatures in the movie is beautyful. in the beginning the Na'vi people looked very wierd. but once the movie really gets going you start to get attracted to the Na'vi's they are very beautyful, gotta love this movie. five stars, dont think im ever going to see anything this amazing in my live again....
