  • this has to be the best song ever written....

  • jesus christ he has the hottest speaking voice ever

  • people... please don't feed the troll

  • @BonIverSUCKS i think your just jealous of one of the most talented musicians in the world

  • @BonIverSUCKS you really have too much hate. you can like whatever you want and thats great and nobody will complain, but generally speaking the people watching this video came here because they enjoy this guy's music, and i just don't understand why you have to go around every bon iver video on youtube and bitch about it. it makes absolutely no sense?

  • "this is not the sound of a new man or crispy realisation" but it sure is amazing. :D love it!

  • @BonIverSUCKS it's fine if you don't like this, but why are you wasting your energy on tearing it down? Comment on videos you do like.

  • I never question anything Justin does, but can some one tell me why on earth he doesn't play this with the acoustic guitar?

  • @dconn24 Erm...as far as I can see he's using an electro-acoustic here, because if you look under his left arm you can see the F-hole, or the long f cut out of the body. This gives the guitar a more acoustic tone and also increases the volume a bit. So he is basically using an acoustic, although he probably just wanted the amplifying properties of an electric. Maybe... :/

  • Great song.

  • awesome video. Great moment in musical history. Vernon's story really is inspiring and so very real.

  • this is my favorite, thanks for posting☀

  • Im sure his new tour is going to be beautiful. He has a full band, and it will be wonderful.

But I'd give anything to see a show like this.

  • A lovely and authentic version --- thank you for posting.

Does anyone happen to know if the dual microphones are used/treated to get the double-track/stereo(ish) effect on the original recording ? (by delaying or prrocessing one side, perhaps?) Just a guess....

  • Tuning is open D. Capo on whichever fret you like. He plays it on the 6th live but 7th on the album. Rad song.

  • @ablapointe thank you

  • tuning anyone?

  • fantastic

  • Freaken awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this man changed my life

  • @JoelsTunes tell me about it.

  • I love this man. He is brilliant.

  • This is the only thing that makes opiate withdrawals tolerable.

I might live...I may live...and someday, maybe someday I'll figure out "whatever could this be that's brought me to this loss..."

and maybe then I can begin to breathe again.

  • I hate your camera, for dying. But I love you for being in the front row.

  • @Numiful - the Canopy is a small venue. It was no problem to elbow my way up front. Actually, I wasn't going to post this video at first because the ending is cut off, but my brother told me I should anyway. Justin's performance kinda outshines the imperfections in the recording. It's like life. Beautiful while it's here, but often cut short.

  • @ablapointe

    True.

  • @ablapointe Like Jeff Buckley.

  • @ablapointe that's deep. nice statement, and so true.

  • @ablapointe, thank you so much for posting this. Such a beautifully haunting performance.

  • best song to end the album

  • this performance makes everything right

  • this song is amazing! maybe best one on the album? hmmm

  • @bethfoz after blindsided!

  • Why the heck does this end RIGHT before the song ends. So. Frustrating.

  • My camera ran out of memory.

  • Ah. No fault to you then. That's just unfortunate.

  • Ah. Then no fault of yours. That just sucks..

  • @ablapointe well that answers that.

  • @ablapointe its called tape dumbfuck analog AND digital

  • Please oh please oh please....make a second record. I have worn.out.this.one

  • @marajake you never wear out bon iver.......but i know what you mean :)

  • his voice is the most amazing sound known to man kind

  • Comment removed

  • great recording! thanks!

  • i'm moved to tears

  • Blue Balls!!!!!! Amazing, but I can't believe it stopped when it did. Burn....

  • Cry like a baby every time I hear this song; it's just so penetrating.

  • cannot believe i missed this shit

  • what a guy he is! fantastic music both Volcanco Choir and Bon Iver and seems a great guy too. All the best to him, very grounded and funny too!

  • John Prine!! :D

  • What can you say about man who can write something like this?! Genius, what a voice!

"All my love was down, in a frozen ground". Yes, I remember...

  • holy shit...that is awesome. talk about being there in the song, I thought he was gonna choke up there for a second...

  • hi everyone, if you like this you should check out Sigur Ros.

  • @markhedder quite different, but still very good.

  • if i ever saw him live, i would just close my eyes and listen.

  • Yeah, instead moshing like the others.

    ....oh wait.

  • lollapalooza 09 stoned in the rain, it was amazing.

  • i was with my brother and his wife when he took this video and sadly his camera battery died before the song finished. was so glad to hear this song as it's my favorite off the album. they weren't even going to play stacks until someone called out the request. can't wait to see what bon iver does next.

  • nice one,a bit of a bummer mising the end, but nice to hear him speaking at the start. what a voice.

  • your love will be safe with meeee

  • 100% agree with Modelcit. Huge buzzkill on missing the last two lines of the song.

    Nonetheless, Justin Vernon is amazing.

  • GUYS. He's class. Listen to him. He even said so.

  • Ditto JV, tour Australia.....

  • would be sick if he covered john prine

  • You cut off right before the best line of the song. what a let down jeez. anyway still a great song.

  • Can't believe I missed this show. I am an idiot.

  • Love this guy, he went to a cabin and MADE PURE MUSIC. Then he goes on the road and plays it with the most feeling i have ever seen an artist play.

  • pleeaaassee tour australia!!!

  • he did, couple of months back

  • it's open d tuning capo 6th fret live and 7th on the cd :)

  • a capo basically raises the pitch, but in this song he uses a different tuning . with a capo to basically change the tuning again and make it easier to play different chords

  • do you know what tuning he uses? i've been trying to figure it out, but nothing sounds right.

  • I think it's an open D tuning, which is D A D F# A D, and a capo at the sixth fret or so..

  • i agree so powerful..makes me cry everytime

  • I can't believe how low his speaking voice is compared to the way he sings.

  • I can't sing in falsetto. It takes more talent than you give credit for.

  • me either. your exactly right

  • @wepmajoe man, every male can access falsetto as soon as he hits puberty. you're either a chick or a kid, it's fucking science stop beaing a fuckin spastic

  • powerfull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gutted about the end of this vid... the last line of this song ... 'your love will be, safe with me' quite litterally makes me bawl every time. Great artist.

PS a cappo ddoes just raise the pitch,

  • great live and a lovely human being to talk to....we love ya Justin.

  • man...i shuld have went to Glastonboury...ugh the lineup was just so fucking good......noooooo

  • Come to Calgary, please. =)

  • i love the sound capo does to guitars. also his voice is pretty much perfect. probably the best performance of this song i've found. :)0))

  • ? Capos just make it easier for a person to play a particular chord progression in a different key while using the same forms.

  • i thought a capo raised the pitch of a guitar

  • I absolutely love Justin Vernon.

  • Wow, this song is beautiful, hypnotic, mantra-like, meditational. The magic of alternate tunings. As good as anything John Martyn ever did.

  • Saw BonIver last night- one of the best gigs I've seen.

  • I was lucky enough to go to a gig of his, too. Outstanding, he's so good live.

  • I kept getting chills through this whole video. Goddamn you can FEEL the emotion. :]

  • i love this guy, he's so genuine and his music is so deep and powerful

  • Justin Vernon and Chris Martin have the most beautiful falsetto's ever.

  • i think justin's falsetto slightly superior to chris's

  • maybe.

it's a tough call, and I respect your opinion with all my soul.

  • if by slightly you mean much.

and chris martin has become an awful arse

  • yeah seriously.

    Post-viva la vida he's such a douchebag

  • thom yorke

  • TRUE

  • I think Jònsi from Sigur Rós has the best falsetto as such, but I love Justins voice. It has more of a personality. I`m gonna see Bon Iver in August! Yay! :)

  • the song Saeglopur by Sigur Ros is sooo good.

  • I agree with you.

  • that is amazing i just found this version and i'm going to canopy club tonight..sweeet

  • He has a very warm voice when he's talking

  • *warm fuzzy feeling*

  • A man with such a deep voice that sings like an angel.

    Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.

  • This is one of those songs I cant seem get sick of. Chills!!

  • ...your love will be safe with me.

    :[

  • The way he sings 'that has brought me tooo thiiis loss...' is just awesome to me. Never get tired of that.

  • thanks for posting this.

    you did good, man.

  • He seems like such a genuine guy. Stupidly good voice too.

  • Excellent.

  • tell me pepp how can I be more like you with all your style and mad ups.

  • if you want to call it soul folk , do so

  • Magic disney dust? It's much better than that. Give the guy some credit.

  • 'Soul Folk' should be added to the dictionary, because that's exactly what this is.

  • ugh why was it cut short?

  • Mesmerizing.

  • I didn't really mean to classify it. That's just how I think of this music.

  • New American folk music.

  • do you think it can be as easily classified/

    i dont know , maybe.

artists like him dont come along often.

  • it almost looks ans sounds like he's crying at 6:33

  • He most likely is... as a fellow musician, it's sometimes difficult not to tear up while singing a song in such a powerful moment with so much personal meaning.. if that makes sense..

P.S. does anyone know why he double mics his vocals?

  • not sure if this has anything to do with it as he doesn't seem to be using both mics at the same time, but you can hear he's double-tracked all his vocals on the album, so perhaps its that he's going for that chorus-type sound.

an alternative is perhaps the other mic is going through different processing and effects units for a stylistic difference in sound, perhaps he uses this in certain songs.

    these are just guesses though.

  • interesting

  • Meric Long from the Dodos always plays with 2 mics, one of them has a normal sound and the other with reverb so he switches for certain parts. Hes probably doing something along those lines if i had to take a guess

  • i think it's to duplicate the sound of all the over-dubbing on the album. it's a great sound though

  • Jeff Buckley reincarnite? High-five man great stuff. We should sneak into record shops at night and put this cd in all of the new Kanye West sleeves imo.

  • i think that Bon Iver are the beginning of a new authentic and lyrical movement in the music industry.

a movement that the industry has been needing.

human emotion and our need for care with one another seems to be emitted for such songs.

    its good for society.

  • I agree pepp. It kind off reminds me of the Seattle scene in some respects-not the music itself obviously- but the honesty and integrity of those bands is something that Justin shares.

  • I know what you mean about the seattle connection. His music has the same feeling, at times, that say, 'Hunger strike' has. Music does matter so much. It speaks to people, comforts people.

  • Justin is so damn amazing..

  • yeah its open d tuning on the 6th fret

  • hey, anyone know where to find the guitar chords and guitar tuning?

  • don't know if you still need it as you've probably found it or worked it out by now, but the tuning without the capo is D A D Gb A D, like one big D chord. he puts the capo on the 6th fret here but i think on the CD its 7th fret. maybe his voice wasn't feeling up for doing the high notes. what a beautiful voice though.

  • Finally seeing this dude in December.

  • amazing!!!!!!!! so talented

  • Simply beautiful. Totally in love with his music.

  • wtf is kumran?

  • best track on the record.

  • This guy used to go to my school.

  • thats actually a cool thing to say! no joke.lol

  • oh no, the video ends before the song is over! ahhhhh I can't take it!!!!!!!

  • this song just breaks you, it's so heavy

  • chords are tricky

  • oh come on why does it end right before the last line, that's just cruel

  • Sorry, but my camera ran out of memory. I probably should not have filmed so much of the pre-song banter. If I only would have known...

    Life goes on.

  • I love the pre-song stuff, it's so honest.

  • I love this song. Does he do any other slow songs similar to this?

  • The whole album is wonderful, its called For Emma, Forever Ago....Go get it, you won't be disappointed.

  • The video ends, missing what I think is the best line of the song - the line that sums up the song and the album. A second after the video ends here he sings "Your love will be...safe with me."

  • Not a lot can make me cry, but this does.

  • I discover this song thanks to house m.d

    great song

  • at 6.35 is amazing...really lovely song

  • Possibly the best performance of this song I've heard maybe even better than the album version.

  • Yeah, it's Open D tuning (D A D F# A D) capo'd at the 6th fret. You just kind of have to figure out the "chords" by feeling around.

  • Best song on a truly amazing album!

  • Worked it out. Its D A D F# A D

  • I thought it was in open C, but I'll try this.

The only thing not to like about Bon Iver is that you can't sing along in the same key lol

  • Does anyone know the tuning for this song. Looks like the capo is on the 6th fret?

  • This song is amazing. I love indie folk musicians.

  • I love this song. Perhaps more than any other I've ever heard. Gorgeous rendition.
