Can someone with more knowledge than me enlighten me.... Dave Murray seems to me to be an amazing guitarist, techincally, of course, but he seems to combine that technicality with depth... I'm just wondering why he isn't (or at least I've never known him to be) counted as one of the best guitarists in the world. What is he lacking, if anything? I'm personally amazed by his playing.

@LukusDimitrius I think its because he isnt considered a great player in his own right because he is part of a band and a guitar team, rather than a single player that defines a band such as steve vai or eddie van halen, also he doesnt play out of ego to just show off all the time he playes to enhance the bands overall sound and be one of the three amgos, i agree though, he should be considered one of the all time greats, he fucking rules.

Iron Maiden was the first band I ever really got into back in the 1980s, and yeah, Dave and Adrian were just awesome. The whole band is like that, they're all great players (giants, even) in their chosen instruments.

That is true, Dave, Jannick and Adrian are the best guitar trio in one band.

Also superb and technically even better were Steve Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen and the acoustic trio John McLaughlin, Al di Meola and Paco de Lucia.

However, none of these trios have ever formed a real band as the three IM guitarist do.

Hehhh... My fav band is IRON MAIDEN, but when I read this, I just get fucked up. I mean, how can you compare these guitarists? They play totally different music, both have great style, but Li is more talented I think.

Dave just does good but simple solos, while Herman's style is really innovative (and DragonForce is also one of my favourite bands).

I think where Dave M. leaves everyone behind is that what he plays is good musically, not just amazing technique. A lot of fast metal bands don't seem very musical. I'd rather listen to David Gilmore than most of them. Dave Murray plays the song, not just scales at the same time the song is happening. I love Maiden.
