  • Nice one :-)

  • Good vid, but you've included Game Boy Color games for the standard Game Boy tribute. I wouldn't mention this if you'd included Game Boy Advance games, but you didn't.

  • glad you liked it ^^

  • what's the game at 2:29 to 2:42 called?

Looks funny because the dude you play can do so much things xD

  • bionic commando :) excellent action game that recently got another remake for xbla I think.

  • I collect Game Boy games for Super Game Boy enhancements and default color pallet games released before the Super Game Boy.

  • AWSOME!!!!! this is why i collect gameboys :)

  • The music rocks. Well done !

  • i love the song. it's great. i really like game boy but i don't like playing it on my game boy pocket because the images get blurred when the character moves. it is better on a game boy color but my gbc's buttons are kinda stiff. does anyone else have this problem?

  • Yeah, the Game Boy Pocket kinda sucks. In addition to the blurriness, the d-pad is a big weak.

  • kirby's pinball land is my fave gameboy game, battletoads and mr. do! are cool too :)

  • You go Gameboy!!!!!

  • hey mister awesome guy the song isn't on your myspace! will you put it on there soon so i can listen to it because i think it is a awesome song!!!!!!

  • hehe it is, but only in this video. I don't have the file anymore so can't offer it for downloading. Thanks!

  • oh that's too bad, i think you did a really good job on that song. it's catchy and makes you happy! what thingy did you use to make it?

    k thanks bye

  • The Nintendo Gameboy..my first game console! So many memories! The best portable game ever made!

  • i personally like the game boy pocket... caz it's smaller but acually i have never tried the regualar game boy so i shouldn't be talking...

  • what about pokemon??? like it or not it is a great game

  • great vid. I'd say the only thing you're really missing is Monster Max - absolutely amazing forgotten game, probably one of my favourites on the system.

also don't know what that guy was talking about earlier about Pokemon making game boy popular - pokemon was only released in like 97, it was the Game Boy's swansong. GB was a beast long before then.

  • 2:26.. plz some one tell me the name of that game, i want it sooo bad, it looks nice

  • the game is tohshinden, a good fighting game released almost at the same time of killer instict. In my opinion, they are two of the best fighting games in this console.

  • thx man

  • Hehe, I've played most of those games and own a fair few of them. I would never have expected to see a forgotten gem like Revenge of the 'Gator in a Youtube video though. =0D

  • Yeah its one of those games I picked up randomly as a kid and it turned out to be a great game :)

  • KWIRK RULEZ!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol thats the only game i saw that i've never seen that i wanted to really play.

  • thanks. i´m crying now:(

  • seriously? cuz i know how you feel. but i never played almost all of these games. i need to beat metroid 2 already! O:<

  • Oh the feeling when you beat a game you've been trying (with some serious time-gaps in between attempts) to beat for a decade...it's just awsome!

These classics are STILL my favorite games even compared to 99% of all the new games around.

  • I feel the same way. Only bad thing I can say really is that they seem so much easier now when I play them on a backlit GBA.

  • I agree, I haven't played them on the GBA though but I've been revisiting games that I just never could beat...let alone getting through certain levels. But now I can beat them with no problem. Mega Man(gameboy) was still a tough nut to crack. But once you learn the enemies pattern of attack they become much easier. Now I can beat Mega Man, TMNT 2 and others within an hour. Guess we've just played them so often that what you need to do in the game's kinda wired into your brain.

  • yeah, I guess mega man is old school game design in a nutshell.

  • Wow, you didn't miss anything, not even ZAS! I'm impressed.

  • I did miss a couple of jap imports that I cant remember the names of right now, but thanks anyway :D

  • great video

  • anyone knows the game at 00:36?

    I miss that game!

  • Mercenary Force, click "more" on the right for a full list..

  • Fantastic video, man. =)

  • dead heat scramble

I am the only one who has a video about this game. Apparently not very popular. ^^

  • That's good, Ill watch the vid :) It seems a bit overlooked, but not underrated.

  • I'm talkin about the game at 1:00 I use to love that game

  • okay.

  • I miss that Kwirk game

  • wow that's old

  • Really well done video !!!

  • I still love game boy because it's the original hand held video game.

  • not really, game & watch was earlier, and maybe something else before that.

  • forgot pokemon man thats the game that made nintendo gameboy what it really is today.. without it gameboy's would be as popular as those tamagotchi virtual pets nothing more nothing less. Notice how fast those handheld video players died off? where you share disks and watch a full steaming video it lasted maybe 4 months.

  • Notice how this isn't a gameboy color or pocket tribute? Pokemon is an overrated series with a ridiculous amount of sequels.. it has nothing to do with the classic status of the original game boy, and it's not as important for the gameboy franchise today as you think.

  • actually without pokemon green (made for that gameboy that has 2 colors (green and black) gameboy wouldn't be that popular I mean sure there is 1 more other game thats zelda thats about it.. everything else is just annoying no quests no story.. just annoying.

  • eh no, you're wrong.

  • maybe i am but there isn't much games I played from emulators and roms GBA/GB and found fun maybe its just me o well.

  • Again, this is for the original GB and nothing else. If you weren't there when it happened and just played some ROMs, it's understandable that you don't know what you're talking about.

  • Well said...I'm 27 so I know what you are talking about...Great post!!

  • Excellent video. This takes me back so many years. Wario World or whatever it's called was brilliant.

  • Thanks! I believe you meant Wario Land (2 games in the series for original GB), amazing game.

  • Yeah that's probably it. It's been so long! Watching this video made me want to buy two Wario plush toys from a Game shop in Manchester yesterday. One for me and one for a friend!

  • so many good memories of the old days. thanx 4 the vid!

  • good video and nice memories!!

  • battle arena toshinden that game was great 4 its time i still hav it

  • great video, man.

  • Oh my god! Memories!I don't care what anyone says - Game Boy does still indeed rule!

That music in the backgroud is well mint! :P

  • haha kwirk. i re discovered it a few days ago and immediately i knew how to finish the first levels after 15 years

  • What's the game on 1:13?

  • read the description to the right..

  • seiken densetsu/final fantasy adventure

  • I have all gameboys except gameboy micro.

  • I never had a gameboy, but I played most of this games

  • Top 10 Game Boy games 1. Tetris 2. Super Mario Bros. 2 3. Castlevania (both versions) 4. Batman (both versions) 5. Final Fantasy 6. Bionic Commando 7. Mega Man (all versions) 8. Ninja Gaiden 9. The Legend of Zelda 10. Battle of Olympus (It's released in Japan)
  • There's no super mario bros 2 or final fantasy for GB, but I know what you meant. Battle of Olympus was released over here as well.. but I thought the NES version was better? Good list though.

  • Really? Can I get it on Ebay?

  • Forgot to put Metroid II

    How can I forget?

  • forgetting kingdom crusade, gargoyles quest, rolans curse 2, nemesis 2 and wario land is worse tho.. :)

  • awesome video, almost brought tears to my eyes remembering some of those games

  • that was good video, i want to play that batman game just becuase he uses a gun.

  • Super Mario Land 1 & 2, TRAX (tank game), Batman, Kirby 2, these are some of the best.

Wario Land was ok, Gragoyles was not as good, castlevania way too hard..

  • I have a soft spot for GQ because it was my first action RPG but the sequel did improve upon it in most ways. Wario Land for me is the best platform game for GB, not sure why you thought it was just "ok"? WL2 wasn't that great though, I admit. Still better than the majority of GB platformers.

Belmonts revenge isnt that hard. You just have to get used to the somewhat clunky controls.

  • Wario Land, I'm not sure which one I had, I may have had both, WL 3 the concept seemed like it would be the best game ever made (you cannot die)

either 1 or 2 the one I played, it just didn't play as good as SML 1 & 2. controls were rougher, stages were more frustrating. I did like the cow hat though.

  • Alright yeah WL3 was for GBC but it was a great, unique game. WL1 had somewhat worse controls than SML2 but not SML1! I loved the treasure hunting, the helmets and all the new characters. It also played much faster than SML2.

  • i love the game at 02:25

    good old times...^^

  • i missed duck tales and Addams family ;-)

  • Well I'm not sure Addams Family i really up to par, isn't it just another movie cash-in..

Duck Tales 1-2 are great, but I prefer the NES versions.

  • The Bionic Commando on Game boy is far better than the NES.

  • I don't know if you tried or not, but this synced perfectly with the song, which was kickass btw :)!

Rolan's Curse 2, Donkey Kong and Super Mario Land 3 (Wario Land) were played one after the other at one point, I own them all xP.

The greatest of all of these games has to be Rolan's Curse 2 imo, its just the best :3.

  • Yes I put some work into it actually, so I'm glad you noticed ^^

Rolan's Curse 2 rocks but I still prefer DK '94, SML3 and Links Awakening to it, because it was somewhat repetitive and I didn't like the boss fights.

  • Haha I know what you mean xP, catchy music though ^_^.

  • I watch your video several times a week, always brings back memories ^^ Great job! Where can I download the song thats playing?

  • Hehe for real? I'm honored! About the song, well you can't because I haven't kept it. However you can find more recent tunes by me on myspace. (dotcom/alexoluthores)

  • EXCELLENT showcase. Donkey Kong '95 rules

  • Thanks man, yeah that's why I saved it for the finale ^^

  • The Game at 2:08 looks alot like a mickey mouse game i used to have for my GB...But i see its bugs bunny?!?!?! how come?? kwirk for ever by the way;) love that came and the music;) great video, 5stars;)

  • Thanks! The answer is simple, it's the same game^^ There might be a few different levels here and there, but otherwise it's just a sprite swap. Don't know which came first, I think it was Bugs Bunny. There are 4-5 games in the series so check it out :) Kwirk is a fav of mine too.

  • No Solar Striker?!?!?!

  • why would a shitty game like solar striker be in it?

  • Hey!!!

    Solar Striker was NOT shitty!!!

  • was too!

  • the GBP Light was a true lit screen, or if it was simply a bulb or two to the sides of the screen that cast light across a reflective screen instead. There's actually a difference, although the end result is basically the same. Sidelighting, though, isn't as complicated technology as a lighted screen. They certainly could have produced sidelighting on the GBC by that point in time. But that, too, I imagine came down to keeping the unit under a certain cost.

  • Yeah the Pocket Light came out in between the Pocket and GBC. So it was quite awhile before the GBA. The Game Gear, Lynx and Nomad were all backlit, which is why they're so bulky - a backlight requires a bit of room behind the screen to light it up. I'm not really sure if

  • lit screen to begin with? And the answer (from Nintendo, at least) was that they wanted to keep the GBA under $99, and if they'd made it with a lit screen it would have gone over the cost.

  • mostly due to time to translate) so that's average. When I first got my GBA, a month after it had been released I bought the screen lighting kit and installed the frontlight myself (in fact all the lit GBs are frontlights, not true backlighting). I remember the big question at the time was, if a frontlight was available as a 2nd party kit, then why hadn't Nintendo issued the GBA with a

  • Yeah, but what about the Game Boy Light, was that released just 2 years before GBA? Then there's the GameGear and I think the Lynx as well that were backlit, that's what I meant when I said the technology was there. I'm not sure what those cost at the time though.

  • sorry, it didn't sound like you'd come to that conclusion. Just saying it was a collectible. By the time we got backlighting, though, it really wasn't all that long since Japan had had it. We're approximately 2 years behind Japan in consoles and video games (games

  • the GB Light is RARE, that's why $99 is a good deal for it. It's a collectible.

  • I know it's rare. For anyone other than the most hardcore collector it's not a good deal, as we've already concluded.

  • Sniff....the gold days....

  • Another 5 star vid. Great work on these tributes man and a thumbs up for use of Ninja Boy 2. Only thing that puzzled me was the use of a couple of color games at the end. Favorited.

  • Thanks man, I appreciate it :) Those Ninja Boys had to be in it.

Yeah, the reason for them being in color is I got too lazy to record gameplay so I used some speedrun vids instead. They were set to color mode but they're actually classic GB games ;)

  • What is that shooter at 2:22?

  • you can check in the list to your right, just click the blue "more" link.

    It's ZAS.

  • nice compil

  • Thanks for uploading.. good dose of nostalgia, for the days when a game could be in black and white and still earn a place in the heart. I really liked your music, too.

  • I heard there was a b&w Game Boy with a built-in light. Too bad it was only released in Japan.

  • Never heard of that, sounds cool. I've seen home-made versions though, with light bulbs along the edge of the screen :)

  • ya. It's called the Gameboy Light.

The GBL is essentially a Gameboy pocket with a backlit screen, and as mentioned before, was released only in japan further increasing it's cost. Expect to pay upwards of $99 (good deal) for a model in good condition.

  • How is that a good deal when you can get a GBA SP for much less?

  • Haha. It isn't, that's the point. When comparing to other sellers, $99 IS a good deal. Of course, this is only true if you're looking for a GBL specifically (many people are). If you're simply looking for a back lit Gameboy that can play all Gameboy games, then perhaps invest in a GBA SP.

  • Heh, I see. Well my GBA SP has served me well so far, never been the type who goes after the most ultra r@re stuff anyway. Still it's interesting because it took so long for us westerners to experience a backlit GB when the technology had been there for years. I've noticed while playing GB games on SP that they're much easier with the improved visibility.

  • Man the Gamboy still looks good after all these years. My grey fat 1989 Gamboy model died a few years ago. truely a classic system.

  • Well you could always buy a GBA SP (they're cheap), makes the classic GB games a lot easier when you have a backlit screen :)

  • There's no doubt the GB had better graphics capabilities than the NES. I mean, the processor is more powerful and it can handle higher res sprites, so yeah..

  • I see, well that makes sense. It does have a bigger problem with slowdown though doesnt it? But it seems the programmers learned to work around this later on..

  • i really wanted to see new ones =[

  • Do you mean new games? This is a tribute to the original gameboy.

  • great video! it was nice to see these games I haden't play for a long time!

  • Truly an age of fun games.

  • nice videoclip

  • What's the song's title?

  • Oh, you made the song...thats too bad, i like it:)

  • Can someoen tell me what games are at 3:37 and 3:58? Thanks!

  • rolan's curse 2 and ninja boy 2

  • Really nice video & some of the games brought back some memories.

I have always liked the simplicity of the original Game Boy, which is why I have kept a totally complete unused one since I was kid LoL Total nostalgia

  • Ahhh, man, anybody else miss the days when somebody couldn't hate a game because the graphics were crap? When having more than six blocks on the screen was "awesome graphics" back in the day? Man, "Memories!" just doesn't cover the nostalgia value of this video :) Now do a SNES tribute, please! :D

  • haha, that's not the way I remember it.. anyway, the technical aspects don't make the graphics for me as they can always be aesthetically pleasing. But, compared to the SNES these gfx do look like crap so I'll let someone else do it instead of me making the GB look bad. I love it too much, sniff.

  • That's fair enough :) SNES is probably my favourite old school console, hoping somebody will make a tribute to it :)

  • Well there are other tributes on this site.. ;) I recommend "my childhood in 4 minutes"

  • In some ways the Game Boy did have better graphics compared to the original NES graphics. It had more sprites and stuff and you didn't have to worry about the lack of color depth since it was in B&W. It was noticeable in a few games.

  • Agreed. The sprites were sometimes a lot more detailed.. but I think due to the poor screen of the original GB it wasn't very noticeable.

  • Donkey Kong Land games proved the Gameboy conquered the NES when it came to graphics and audio.

  • Personally I think the DKL games look pretty bad, but I agree that the GB had games with superior graphics to the NES.

  • The DKL games may look a bit 'scrambled' but the detail/animation is there.

  • Mostly true, except for the backgrounds..

  • Awesome games, Theres alot of those that I missed out on that I'd like to try. Thanx for the upload!

  • I'm glad to hear this as it was another point of the vid, to let people know that there are quite a few gems in the 'ole grey boxes library if you're willing to look for them. :D I might also make a strictly japanese version if I can find enough interesting games.
