  • back again to watch this video and I still think it's one of the finest i've seen of Jake performing live. Will definitely keep coming back :-)

  • I think this song really embodies a philosophy of life - no matter what personal tragedies occur, you have to put them behind you, go out and grab life by the balls.

  • Nice work - remember his pieces on That's Life (oh God that makes me sound like a Mail reader), but his songs are sooooo good.

  • Who isn't partial to a salty kiss or two?

  • wonderful performance from Jake, didn't he once say he didn't like being treated like a 'performing dick', this vid shows just how good a performer he could be, very strong and colossal guitar accompaniment, thanks for posting

  • Cambridge Folk Festival on the 9th of September 1981.

  • What a great song, well performed in Jake's unique style. The lyrics are enjoyable too.

  • A matchless performance!!!!!

  • I was in the audience at that performance! Magic!

  • @Glaznoz Hi where was the show ?? it sort of looks like a folk festival and what year was it ?.

  • Unique. Great English hatter. Brilliant man.

  • I just can't leave this video alone since I found it. It's the best thing i've ever found on YT to be honest. For those of you who have access to Spotify I recommend you search for Jake and get totally stuck, just like I have.

  • @TheRatterdotcom Thanks, Ratter, that was why I posted it - it's my favourite Jake song. and I agree that the more you listen to Jake the more hooked you get!!

  • @elgatto9 It's funny how years go by and you simply forget to use the internet to remind yourself of the things you loved and also find the things you simply can't find elsewhere. I'm busting a gut now to try and find the "Jake On The Box" documentary. Any clues? Don't think i've cried and chuckled this much is equal measure for years :'-)

  • Loved him since i was 15 and I still do. Saw him live in 1980 in Derby and was immediately hooked by his originality, his incredibly satisying lyrics, his musical ability and above all his intensity. Simply FABULOUS!

  • Jake's lyrics paint an utterly priceless picture:

"And when her sobs and hiccups stopped ..."

  • Never be bettered.

  • Priceless !!! I saw him in a working mens club, must have been about 1973, an unforgetable night. an unforgetable personality, in a world of shallow, so-called celebrities

  • Brilliant and life affirming

  • "cankerous rancour"... just one of his many wonderful interior rhymes

great song, great and unique artist

  • Brings the peace.

  • This looks really hard to perform - it's not surprising that I've never heasrd a cover version.

  • there is someone who does covers of jack thackray songs but i dont think anything to them

  • I did hear a good 'Thackeray Tribute Act' down in the Gardeners Arms Lewes about 10 years ago. I hope the chap is still performing - he was worth a good few pints of Skinners and Dark Star beers!!

  • hmmm i havent really heard any good tributes but ill take your word

  • If anybody calls him a misogynist - perhaps quoting "I love a good bum on a woman, it makes my day" - send them straight here.

A pretty refreshing point of view now, never mind 28 years ago!

  • too beautiful

  • What a a fantastic man. What a loss to humanity.........hope he's composing wherever he is :)

  • @sheepsick probably "decomposing"

  • Beautiful Jake
