Something's wrong with your vaccum system. They should go up & down evenly when working properly. Mine have a leak :( as of right now. I bought canisters from an T-bird & the arms ar to long. I'm waiting for a marquis' or lincoln's to rob from a JY.
My father had a Mark when I was very young, I remember pushing a light door down on one side and the other would open. Thas was my favorite, we had a 77 coupe de ville after and that was a rattle trap (typical GM)
